Appendices are provided at the back of the book: a list of active settler leaders in Seoul during the first three decades of the colonial period, and a brief sketch of participants whose oral testimonies and questionnaire responses supplemented Uchida’s archival research. I was hoping to see more obvious inclusion of the oral data in the text, but this was disappointingly absent. ‘‘Why did so many Japanese move to Korea? How did they interact with Koreans? What was the relationship of the settlers to the colonial state? And how do we reconcile their modest power with their weighty numbers?’’(p. 5) These are the questions Uchida sought to answer in Brokers of Empire, and this is done in depth, unearthing the complex partnership between settlers and state, while conscientiously reporting the unjust legislations and harsh treatment of Koreans by both parties. In my opinion, Brokers of Empire is essential reading for a fresh, in-depth analysis of the Japanese colonial presence in Korea.
