Counselling Children After Wildfires: A School-Based Approach

This article focuses on the promotion of healing of children affected by wildfires based on results from our mixed methods study outlined in detail previously (Townshend et al., 2015). A brief review of the literature on children and their responses to natural disasters and to wildfires is followed by key findings from our research. School counselling strategies are outlined that can be implemented school wide (i.e., universal programs, support groups, or in the classroom) or through individual or group counselling.

This article is a summary of the qualitative phase of a mixed-method study investigated the effect that attendance at a therapeutic caregiver-involved camp, Whitecrow Village Camp, had on caregivers of children with FASD. In the qualitative phase, eighteen caregivers completed semi-structured interviews. Eight major content categories were identified in the data and five metathemes emerged under the overarching metatheme of a Life-Changing Experience: Providing Hope. Analysis of the data suggests that attendance at Whitecrow Village Camp had a positive influence on the coping behaviour of caregivers of children with Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD).

A New Twist: Fostering Creative Career Exploration in Young People

The task of making a career decision can seem daunting for many young people. Careers do not alwa... more The task of making a career decision can seem daunting for many young people. Careers do not always follow a straightforward, logical trajectory, and chance events can define or change the course of one's career path. Youth may benefit from a learning environment designed to guide the imagining and inventing of their future. A wide range of experiential exercises can be used to invite clients to "construct their own selves." Kolb's experiential model would seem to offer one framework for constructivist counselors to use in developing a range of experiential activities, including case study approaches. Case study approaches can promote the brainstorming of possibilities and can encourage young people to take a role in learning by stimulating their curiosity. When young people learn to creatively think about the possibilities for other youths' lives, they are more likely to apply the process to their own lives. (Contains 11 references.) A cross-sectional survey explored 96 rural adolescents' perceptions of their rural context and ho... more A cross-sectional survey explored 96 rural adolescents' perceptions of their rural context and how their self-concept is related to perceptions of capability regarding hopes and fears for the future. The youth surveyed, from the Kootenay Boundary region of British Columbia, indicated ambivalence about staying in their communities after leaving high school, although many generally liked living there. Findings reveal a positive correlation between a high estimation of capability for obtaining a future hoped-for self and a high self-concept rating. This result has implications for rural youth, including building self-esteem through fostering perceptions of capability and increasing community engagement.

Life-career planning and counselling often highlights a dilemma for young women, who feel torn by... more Life-career planning and counselling often highlights a dilemma for young women, who feel torn by conflicting values around work and family. This situation is particularly challenging for young women living in rural communities because they may have limited access to role models. In this qualitative study, eight young women describe how they experienced growing up in a rural environment and the impact of that experience on their future plans. Several metathemes emerged from their narratives which have practical relevance for counsellors who are helping youth to shape their futures. RESUME La gestion de la vie personnelle et de la carrière met souvent en évidence le dilemme éprouvé par les jeunes femmes qui se sentent divisées par des valeurs opposées, le travail et la famille. Cette situation est particulièrement difficile pour les jeunes femmes vivant en communauté rurale, car ces femmes n'ont pas d'exemples à imiter. Dans l'étude qualitative en question, huit jeunes femmes décrivent comment elles ont grandi en milieu rural et l'influence que cela a eu sur leurs projets futurs. On peut tirer plusieurs métathèmes qui sont pertinents de manière concrète pour les personnes qui vont conseiller les jeunes dans leur cheminement vers le futur.

A magazine picture collage activity was used with three female counsellor education students as a... more A magazine picture collage activity was used with three female counsellor education students as a vehicle to support them in processing their experience as counsellors in training. The use of magazine picture collage in group supervision is described, and the benefits and challenges are presented. The collages served as jumping-off points for group discussions on developing a sense of competency, a quest for answers, discovering their strengths, finding personal and professional balance, and moving towards the realities of the counselling profession. Collage work can provide an alternate medium in supervision to develop reflective analysis and self-exploration.

SocioDynamic Counselling is ''a way of thinking about people, what they are trying to create in life, and what either impedes or supports their efforts'' (p. 44). It is a learning process rather than a therapy that invites the helper and help-seeker to engage in a participatory, constructive, and creative endeavour. Dr. R. Vance Peavy, an international leader in the counselling profession, has publications in Finnish, Danish, Swedish, and English on constructivist counselling approaches, career development, and human science research. In 2000, he received the Distinguished Senior Contributor Award from the Division of Counselling Psychology of the American Psychological Association for his lifetime contributions to the discipline. In 2001, he was awarded the Stu Conger Award for leadership in Career Counselling and Career Development by the Canadian Career Development Foundation. The week before his death, he received an outstanding achievement award for his contributions to qualitative research by the Planning committee for the International Human Science Research Conference, 2002. The book contains four chapters in addition to an Introduction by Dr. Marie Hoskins and (Auto)Biographical Reflections on Life and Theory by Dr. Denise Larsen. The text is made up of two main sections. The first portion is devoted to the philosophical and psychological underpinnings of SocioDynamic Counselling, while the second portion focuses on counselling practice.
