COVID-19 Survey Participation and Wellbeing: A Survey Experiment

Individuals throughout the world are being recruited into studies to examine the social impacts o... more Individuals throughout the world are being recruited into studies to examine the social impacts of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). While previous literature has illustrated how research participation can impact distress and wellbeing, to the authors’ best knowledge no study has examined this in the COVID-19 context. Using an innovative approach, this study analyses the impacts of participation in a COVID-19 survey in Australia on subjective wellbeing through a survey experiment. At a population level, we find no evidence that participation impacts subjective wellbeing. However, this may not hold for those with mental health concerns and those living in financial insecurity. These findings provide the research community with a deeper understanding of the potential wellbeing impacts from COVID-19-related research participation.

In this paper, we describe the evolution of the American Time Use Survey (ATUS) from its inceptio... more In this paper, we describe the evolution of the American Time Use Survey (ATUS) from its inception as an issue of statistical policy interest in 1991 to its implementation in January 2003 as a new monthly survey sponsored by the Bureau of Labor Statistics. This twelve-year process included three separate survey methodological development phases prior to committing to a path of full operational development. Each phase resulted in one or more reports (see references) that documented our thinking at that point. And each consecutive phase represented a deeper level of agency commitment and outside statistical support and an evolution in our thinking on survey estimation objectives, units of measurement, the universe frame and sampling plan, and the data collection protocol. The American Time Use Survey: Test of Coding Procedures and Lexicon

The American Time Use Survey (ATUS) telephone interviews are scheduled to begin January 2003. Res... more The American Time Use Survey (ATUS) telephone interviews are scheduled to begin January 2003. Respondents will report all of their activities over a 24-hour period. Once these data are collected, coders will assign a three-tiered code to each activity, based upon a lexicon and coding rules developed by the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). Our poster presents the results of a test of the ATUS coding procedures, including the lexicon, the documentation, and the Blaise software. For the test, nine coders received four hours of training. Then, for the next four days, they coded respondents' activities. Periodically while they worked, they filled out questionnaires and rating forms and participated in focus groups. Four of the coders were individually videotaped while coding in a usability laboratory and while participating in think-aloud interviews. Improved wellbeing or distress? Measuring the impacts of participation in a COVID-19 survey on participant wellbeing

Given the large social impacts that COVID-19 is currently having on individuals throughout the wo... more Given the large social impacts that COVID-19 is currently having on individuals throughout the world, a large amount of social and behavioural research is underway to measure and track those effects. Indeed, there has already been an explosion of new research and data collection. Any kind of social research, whether through quantitative or qualitative methods, has the potential to cause distress and impact on participant wellbeing. While previous literature has illustrated the extent to which research participation can impact distress and wellbeing in a number of contexts, no study that we are aware of has yet examined this in the COVID-19 context. This study attempts to partially fill this gap by undertaking analysis of the impacts of participation in a COVID-19 survey on distress and wellbeing. By using self-reported measures, and through the use of a survey experiment, we find little self-reported distress, and weak evidence of improvements in wellbeing through survey participation. Certain population groups, such as those with mental health concerns and those living in financial security did report greater levels of distress, and worsened wellbeing through completion of the survey. These findings provide the research community (including human research ethics committees) with a deeper understanding of the potential wellbeing impacts of COVID-19-related research participation. It 1st presents an overview of the groups work activity occupational distribution education and earnings and then discusses these characteristics as they vary according to marital status and race. The data for this study come primarily from the Current Population Survey which although limited in longitudinal capability is probably the most comprehensive source of data on the employment of older women. While labor force participation of men aged 55 and over has declined dramatically that of older women as a group has remained remarkably stable. In 1987 6.2 million women or 2 of 10 aged 55 or older were in the labor force. Women born at different times have had strikingly different worklife patterns. The fact that women at or near retirement ages have dramatically lower participation rates than young women is only partly an aging effect. To a large extent it reflects cohort differences. Not only have participation rates risen with each successive cohort of women but fundamental changes in worklife patterns have occurred over time. The older cohorts followed a pattern in which slightly fewer than half of the women were in the work force in their early 20s; their participation rates dropped sharply during their childbearing years and then rose to a peak in their late 40s and early 50s. The peak rose higher and higher for each successive cohort but the pattern remained essentially the same. In the last decade or so that pattern has been replaced by one in which participation rates start much higher and continue to rise with no drop off during the childbearing years. Despite media attention focusing on womens movement into nontraditional occupations a majority of women both older and younger work in stereotyped occupations. Some reduction in occupational sex segregation has occurred in recent years although new opportunities have accrued almost exclusively to young women and new labor force entrants. Earnings retirement income and opportunities for part-time work all vary between occupations and greatly affect whether women work and what types of jobs they hold. Married women who benefit from their husbands income as well as their own generally have the easiest time retiring or remaining out of the labor force. Older black women have higher levels of work activity than older white women. Future groups of older women will have had many more years of work experience than women currently aged 55 or older.
