A general control (no manure treatment of the component crops was established) for productivity assessment. The trial, conducted at the Federal College of Agriculture, Ishiagu (04º 30′ N, 06º 45′ E, 150 m above sea level), in the derived savannah plains, Ishiagu, Nigeria in 2012 and 2013 mid-cropping seasons used a randomised complete block design with three replications. It assessed the agronomic performance, cropping system (CS) and plant nutrient (PN) productivity of maize-groundnut in mono-and intercrop as influenced by two animal manure sources. The objective of the study was to assess the growth and yield of groundnut as influenced by manure sources. The results showed that organic manure application significantly (p<0.05) influenced growth and yield in groundnut. The application of poultry manure followed by combined sheep-goat droppings encouraged vegetative growth of groundnut such as plant height, number of branches plant and number of leaves plant except canopy diameter (p>0.05) as well as grain yield. The treatments were cropping systems (sole and intercrop), egusi melon plant population (0; 10,000 and 20,000 plants/ha) and weeding frequency (zero weeding, one weeding at 3 weeks after planting (WAP) and two weedings at 3 and 8 WAP). The treatments were fitted in a 2 x 3 x 3 factorial. There were three replications. The application of poultry manure followed by combined sheep-goat droppings encouraged vegetative growth of groundnut such as plant height, number of branches plant -1 and number of leaves plant -1 except canopy diameter (p>0.05) as well as grain yield. Grain yield of groundnut was significantly (p<0.05) increased by organic manure application in the orderpoultry manure > combined sheep-goat droppings > pig dung > no manure. Among the organic manure evaluated, poultry manure gave significantly higher grain yield that was 27%, 39% and 51% compared with combined sheep-goat droppings, pig dung and no-manure nutrient applications, respectively. The application of organic manure is good for groundnut, especially poultry manure as to increase yield and reduce cost in farmers' fields as well as to enhance food security and improve the protein intake of people living in the derived savannah agro-ecological zone of Nigeria and its environs.
