The amount of Fe in tourmaline has a prominent influence on the pyroelectricity. Fe content linearly decreases the pyroelectric coefficient in the composition range between 0.01(1) and 14.6(2) wt% FeO. Thus, to a first approximation, tourmaline pyroelectric coefficients may be predicted directly from the chemical composition derived by routine electron probe microanalysis.

Acid dissolution was used to obtain a solution from which magnesium containing complexes were precipitated by either oxalic acid or ammonium hydroxide. The transformation of precipitates to the oxide was monitored by thermal analysis and XRD and the transformed powders were studied by electron microscopy. The MgO powders were added as dopants to Bi SrCa CuO powders and 2 2 8 high temperature superconductor thick films were deposited on silver. Addition of suitable MgO powder resulted in increase of critical current density, J , from 8900 A cm y2 to 13 900 A cm y2 measured at 77 K and 0 T. The effect of MgO addition c was evaluated by XRD, electron microscopy and critical current density measurements. q 1998 Elsevier Science B.V.
