Jane Greve mainly carries out research in subjects related to population health, including health interventions and health politics. In recent years, her research has included research on health economic consequences of overweight and obesity, life circumstances for persons with severe mental disorders and effects of health interventions, both during pregnancy and later in life. Jane Greve also carries out projects in the area of education, mainly on the transition from lower to upper secondary education, and she often uses data from the Danish registries to investigate her research questions.

Labor Market Effects of Intrauterine Exposure to Nutritional Deficiency: Evidence from Administra... more Labor Market Effects of Intrauterine Exposure to Nutritional Deficiency: Evidence from Administrative Data on Muslim Immigrants in Denmark * This paper examines whether nutritional disruptions experienced during the stage of fetal development impair an individual's labor market productivity later in life. We consider intrauterine exposure to the month of Ramadan as a natural experiment that might cause shocks to the inflow of nutrients essential for fetal development. Specifically, we use administrative data from Denmark to investigate the impact of exposure to Ramadan in utero on labor market outcomes of adult Muslim males, including employment status, annual salary, hourly wage rate, and hours of work. Our findings indicate that potential exposure to nutritional disruptions during a critical stage of fetal development has scarring effects on the fetus expressed as poor labor market outcomes later in life. Specifically, exposure to Ramadan in the 7 th month of gestation results in a lower likelihood of employment, a lower salary, and reduced labor supply, but not necessarily a lower wage rate. We also document suggestive evidence that these results may partially be driven by increased disability and to a lesser extent by poor educational attainment among those who were exposed to Ramadan during this particular period in utero.

Overweight and Obesity and the Demand for Primary Physician Care * The standard economic model fo... more Overweight and Obesity and the Demand for Primary Physician Care * The standard economic model for the demand for health care predicts that unhealthy behaviour such as being overweight or obese should increase the demand for medical care, particularly as clinical studies link obesity to a number of serious diseases. In this paper, we investigate whether overweight or obese individuals demand more medical care than normal weight individuals by estimating a finite mixture model which splits the population into frequent and non-frequent users of primary physician (GP) services according to the individual's latent health status. Based on a sample of wage-earners aged 25-60 years drawn from the National Health Interview (NHI) survey 2000 and merged to Danish register data, we compare differences in the impact of being overweight and obese relative to being normal weight on the demand for primary physician care. Estimated bodyweight effects vary across latent classes and show that being obese or overweight does not increase the demand for primary physician care among infrequent users but does so among frequent users.

This paper analyzes the relationship between three body weight measures and employment status and... more This paper analyzes the relationship between three body weight measures and employment status and wages, thereby broadening the perspective of the literature on obesity and labor market outcomes. The analysis uses a unique dataset from a Danish panel survey from 1995 and 2000, combined with administrative registers, covering 8000 individuals. Results show a negative effect of body weight on employment for women, with a small positive effect of being overweight on employment for men. When the sample is split into the private and the public sector, results further show that in the private sector body weight has a negative effect on wages for women but a positive effect for men, whereas in the public sector body weight has no influence on wages for either men or women.

Child obesity has increased in almost all developed countries during the last 30 years. Existing ... more Child obesity has increased in almost all developed countries during the last 30 years. Existing empirical research on child obesity derives mainly from the US, Canada, Australia and the UK, and points at maternal employment as an explanation for this trend. This paper uses the Danish Longitudinal Survey of Children (DALSC) merged with Danish register panel data from 1995 to 2002 to explore whether there is a causal relationship between maternal employment and children’s overweight status at age 7½ in Denmark. The instrumental variables technique is used to explore possible bias due to unobserved ability of mothers. In contrast to the existing literature this paper shows no effect of mothers working hours on child obesity. Subgroup analyses on formal and informal day care suggest that among children in informal day care (family day care) maternal employment has no significant effect on child obesity, whereas among children in formal day care (centre based care, pre-school) maternal ...

Living in deprived neighborhoods has been shown to influence, among other things, labor market outcomes and crime. Therefore, we explore how living in a deprived neighborhood with different characteristics influences the mental health of the residents. We utilize a quasi-random allocation of applicants into different neighborhoods through the public social housing (PSH) office to estimate the effect on mental health of living in a deprived neighborhood. The applicants entitled to PSH are lower-income residents with both an urgent housing problem and social problems. Our results suggest that being exposed to a deprived neighborhood as an adult has a significant negative impact on mental health among vulnerable men. We evaluate the impact of a nationwide public health intervention on deaths from sudden infant de... more We evaluate the impact of a nationwide public health intervention on deaths from sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS), using population data from Denmark in a regression discontinuity research design. The information campaign–implemented primarily through a universal nurse home visiting program–reduced infant mortality by 17.6 percent and saved between 11.5-14.5 lives over 10,000 births. The estimated effect sizes are 11-14 times larger among low birthweight and preterm infants relative to the overall population. Improvement in infant mortality is concentrated among those with lower socio-economic status and with limited access to health information, thereby reducing health inequities at birth in Denmark.
