A bible translation project of the New Testament was completed in 2005 and the researcher examined how the cultural diverse terms were rendered in the translation. This study has two main research questions: First, has the recent translation of the New Testament into the Lokạạ language affected the development of the language and its social culture and if so, how? Second, how do the speakers within the Lokạạ language community view the relationship between the translation of the New Testament into their language and the development of their language and culture? The Lokạạ New Testament translation has made a significant impact on the development of the Lokạạ language and the community which speaks it. The impact of literacy efforts has meant that many people can read Lokạạ and understand it reasonably well. The efforts of literacy have been acknowledged by the local community and the local government is taking steps to use and teach Lokạạ in the schools, utilizing the orthography and materials developed by the Lokạạ translation and literacy project. The perceptions of the language community affirm the use of Lokạạ by a wide range of individuals in a wide range of social settings. It has also proven that the use of special biblical terms can be modified using the local alternative as options.
