These characteristics include large propagation delay, high error rate, low bandwidth, and limited energy. In UWSNs, improved network lifetime, increased throughput and low end-to-end delay are prominent issues which are constantly attracting the research community. In this paper, we propose an energy efficient routing protocol, named Sink-Mobility in Depth Based Routing Protocol (SMDBR) for UWSNs. SMDBR utilizes the Mobile Sink (MS) to enhances network lifetime gather the data efficiently. It also utilizes the depth of sensor nodes for forwarding the data packets. The path followed by MS is elliptical, and it is moving with constant speed. Based on simulation, we perceive that SMDBR contributes to the performance improvement in terms of network lifetime, energy consumption, stability period and end-to-end delay of network.

Our proposed scheme increases the stability period, network lifetime, and throughput of the WSN. The scheme incorporates dynamic sink mobility in a way that mobile sink (MS) moves from dense (in terms of number of nodes) regions towards sparse regions. Intelligently moving the sink to high density regions ensure maximum collection of data. As, more number of nodes (sensors) are able to send data directly to MS, therefore, significant amount of energy is saved in each particular round. However, there is a certain limitation to this approach. Nodes which are far from sink have to wait much for their turn. So, there are chances of buffer (node storage) overflow that is not desirable. To overcome this issue our scheme includes. Clustering (communication via CHs) becomes the part for those regions which are away from MS. Simulation results show that DYN-NbC outperforms the other two protocols D-LEACH and LEACH in terms of stability period, network lifetime, and network throughput.

The Energy Management System (EMS) in the home receives the market and system signals and controls the loads, Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning systems (HVAC), storages and local generation units according to the user preferences. This survey encompasses novel home energy management techniques including different shiftable and non-shiftable load scheduling methods and peak shaving strategies. Several Pricing strategies have been suggested for smart grid such as, Real-Time Pricing (RTP), Time of Use (ToU), Inclining Block Rates (IBR), Critical Peak Pricing (CPP), etc. Moreover, this paper discusses the HEM architecture and reveals that the different energy management techniques intelligently schedule the appliances in order to satisfy the maximum resident&#39;s comfort level and consume the energy optimally.

This context is referred to as provenance in distributed, grid and workflow computing and has implications like trust, reliability, verification, reproduction, etc. In this paper, we present various application scenarios of the provenance data and the implication of such data for the Cloud infrastructure. These applications includes; (i) to find patterns in the usage of Cloud resources which are based on resource types, instances types and user data, (ii) reusing existing resources which are populated by other users of the Cloud and (iii) providing an improved fault tracking system which can be further enhanced for the fault management. These are absolute advantages and the data can be further utilized for various other scenarios, e.g., trust and reliability in the Cloud. Mainly, we focus on the storage mechanism of provenance data and the usage of such data via query, visualization and the utilization of Cloud resources.

The proposed AGC mechanism consists of a microcontroller with built in ADC, pre &amp; post attenuators, VGA and a RMS detector. Typically, RMS detectors are available with limited dynamic control range of 50-55 dB i.e., either from -10 to -60dBm or -30 to -80dBm. In this work, the dynamic range of such RMS detector has been widened by making an efficient use of pre attenuator. Dynamic range of 80dBis achieved using the proposed technique.

In this study, new and rapid stability indicating ultraviolet spectroscopic methods were develope... more In this study, new and rapid stability indicating ultraviolet spectroscopic methods were developed and validated for the estimation of ezetimibe and carvedilol in pure form and in their respective formulations. Since both the drugs are poorly water soluble, 20% v/v acetonitrile in triple distilled water was selected as the solvent system for both the drugs. This ensured adequate drug solubility and maximum assay sensitivity. The linearity range for ezetimibe and carvedilol at their respective wavelength of detection of 232 nm and 238 nm was obtained as 2-50 microg/ml and 2-20 microg/ml respectively. The linear regression equations obtained by least square regression method, were Y = 0.0443 x (X) + 0.0106 for ezetimibe and Y = 0.1080 x (X) + 0.034 for carvedilol, where Y is the absorbance and X is the concentration (in microg/ml) of pure drug solution. The detection and quantitation limit as per the error propagation theory were found to be 0.4 microg/ml and 1.3 microg/ml respectivel...

With multiprocessing comes the problem of scheduling which we have tried to address in this paper. In this paper, we have explained the resources and processes simulation that we have designed to optimize the process scheduling task of operating systems. This explains how to model and simulate a system to evaluate its performance and utilization and then analysing the results to go for the improvements in the real system. We have taken three independent processes and five resources which consist of one or more instances, for our experiment and evaluation task. This paper presents the implementation done in the C language provides option for the work to be adapted for modeling and simulation of any other scheduling tasks that need to be performed by the OS. Then a proper set of results can be interpreted for target system improvements.

Coordinating human and machine intelligence to classify microblog communications in crises

An emerging paradigm for the processing of data streams involves human and machine computation wo... more An emerging paradigm for the processing of data streams involves human and machine computation working together, allowing human intelligence to process large-scale data. We apply this approach to the classification of crisis-related messages in microblog streams. We begin by describing the platform AIDR (Artificial Intelligence for Disaster Response), which collects human annotations over time to create and maintain automatic supervised classifiers for social media messages. Next, we study two significant challenges in its design: (1) identifying which elements must be labeled by humans, and (2) determining when to ask for such annotations to be done. The first challenge is selecting the items to be labeled by crowdsourcing workers to maximize the productivity of their work. The second challenge is to schedule the work in order to reliably maintain high classification accuracy over time. We provide and validate answers to these challenges by extensive experimentation on realworld datasets. 1 We refer to the attack on September 2013 on the Westgate shopping mall in Nairobi, Kenya.

There are a number of challenges caused by the large amount of data and limited resources such as... more There are a number of challenges caused by the large amount of data and limited resources such as memory, processing capability, energy consumption, and bandwidth, when implementing vision systems on wireless smart cameras using embedded platforms. It is usual for research in this field to focus on the development of a specific solution for a particular problem. There is a requirement for a tool which facilitates the complexity estimation and comparison of wireless smart camera systems in order to develop efficient generic solutions. To develop such a tool, we have presented, in this paper, a complexity model by using a system taxonomy. In this model, we have investigated the arithmetic complexity and memory requirements of vision functions with the help of system taxonomy. To demonstrate the use of the proposed model, a number of actual systems are analyzed in a case study. The complexity model, together with system taxonomy, is used for the complexity estimation of vision functions and for a comparison of vision systems. After comparison, the systems are evaluated for implementation on a single generic architecture. The proposed approach will assist researchers in benchmarking and will assist in proposing efficient generic solutions for the same class of problems with reduced design and development costs.

This paper focuses on energy efficiency aspects and related benefits of RAN-as-a-Service (RANaaS)... more This paper focuses on energy efficiency aspects and related benefits of RAN-as-a-Service (RANaaS) implementation (using commodity hardware) as architectural evolution of LTE-Advanced networks toward 5G infrastructure. RANaaS is a novel concept introduced recently, which enables the partial centralization of Radio Access Network (RAN) functionalities depending on the actual needs as well as on network characteristics. In the view of future definition of 5G systems, this cloudbased design is an important solution in terms of efficient usage of network resources. The aim of the paper is to give a vision of the advantages of the RANaaS, to present its benefits in terms of energy efficiency and to propose a consistent system-level power model as a reference for assessing innovative functionalities towards 5G systems. The incremental benefits through the years are also discussed in perspective, by considering technological evolution of IT platforms and the increasing matching between their capabilities and the need for progressive virtualization of RAN functionalities. The description is complemented by an exemplary evaluation in terms of energy efficiency, analyzing the achievable gains associated with the RANaaS paradigm.

CARE: Coverage-aware connectivity restoration algorithm for mobile actor/robot networks

Maintaining coverage-aware connectivity is extremely crucial for successful operation of mobile a... more Maintaining coverage-aware connectivity is extremely crucial for successful operation of mobile actor/robot networks as mobile nodes have to collaborate on the data received from sensors and perform coordinated action. However, failure of a critical node (i.e., cut vertex) may introduce a coverage hole besides partitioning the network into disjoint segments, and thus disrupts the operation. Most of the published schemes are reactive, require additional placement of nodes and only concentrate on restoring connectivity. Mission-critical time-sensitive applications crave an instantaneous self-healing recovery with minimum overhead. This paper presents a localized and hybrid coverage-aware connectivity restoration (CARE) algorithm which opts to rejuvenate lost connected coverage while minimizing recovery overhead. The design philosophy of CARE is based on “caretaker” theory. CARE proactively segregates critical/non-critical nodes, designates appropriate caretaker to each critical node in order to minimize recovery delay and avoid overreacting against non-critical node failure. CARE prefers to nominate a highly connected non-critical neighbor with highest overlapped coverage to minimize the repercussions and scope of recovery. The pre-designated guardian detects the failure and instigates a recovery that may involve controlled and coordinated multi-node relocation. Simulation results confirm the effectiveness and efficiency of CARE compared to contemporary schemes found in the literature.
