Nonlinear propagation modeling of infrasound

The significance of nonlinear propagation effects on infrasound is studied using the Nonlinear Pr... more The significance of nonlinear propagation effects on infrasound is studied using the Nonlinear Progressive Wave Equation (NPE) [B. E. McDonald and W. A. Kupperman, J. Acoust. Soc. Am., 81, 1406--1417 (1987)]. The NPE model accounts for nonlinear effects associated with a weak shock front, including shock-driven energy loss and self refraction. Numerical implementation is accomplished using a pseudospectral approach, which provides excellent computational efficiency while still maintaining acceptably small numerical errors. The nonlinear effects are isolated by generating NPE predictions with the nonlinear terms turned on and off. With the nonlinear terms off, the NPE reduces to a standard linear PE formulation. Waveform predictions through a realistic atmosphere are compared to ground truth observations to evaluate the NPE model performance and assess the influence of the nonlinear effects along the propagation path.

Ma... more An examination is made of Zn3P2 as developed for low-cost, high-efficiency photovoltaic cells. Material preparation is outlined noting that single crystals up to 1 x 2 cm have been grown by vapor transport using the Bridgman technique. Consideration is given to defect chemistry with reference to electrical resistivity measured by the four-point probe method, the influence of annealing, and hole concentration as a function of phosphorous equilibrium partial pressure. Based on X-ray diffraction analysis, the degree of preferential orientation was determined. Optical properties are outlined in terms of the interband absorption edge of Zn3P2 bulk monocrystals and room-temperature reflectivity. Consideration is given to the development of Zn3P2 photovoltaic cells and values are presented for the dark current-voltage characteristics of Mg Schottky contacts to single-crystal Zn3P2.

The goal of this work was to evaluate the suitability of Zn/sub 3/P/sub 2/ as a potentially low c... more The goal of this work was to evaluate the suitability of Zn/sub 3/P/sub 2/ as a potentially low cost, high conversion efficiency material for photovoltaic devices. The important results of the research are presented and discussed. The major accomplishments of this work are: (1) the development of a vapor transport method for the growth of large single crystals; (2) the development of two methods of thin film growth: vacuum evaporation and close space transport; (3) the determination of the optical constants of Zn/sub 3/P/sub 2/ including the indices of refraction, the optical absorption coefficient, and the ultra-violet to visible reflectivity spectra; (4) a determination of the factors which influence the electrical conductivity and how these relate to the defect chemistry of Zn/sub 3/P/sub 2/; (5) measurement of the barrier height of metal-Zn/sub 3/P/sub 2/ contacts and the development of a model which relates the barrier height to the properties of the metal-semiconductor interface; (6) measurement of the minority carrier diffusion length in Zn/sub 3/P/sub 2/; (7) the development of several single and double layer anti-reflection coatings; and (8) the development of Schottky barrier photovoltaic devices employing a grid device and transparent metal film design, with conversion efficiencies as high asmore » 6.08% (total area) or 7.6% (active area).« less
