In recent years, parallel to the development in photogrammetry, more effective methods are researched to make available digitizing line features like roads full automatically or semi-automatically from digital aerial photographs. Because it is not still possible to designate the full automatic feature extraction methods clearly, the semi-automatic feature extraction methods, which combine experienced interpretation of an operator with the speed of an computer algorithm, are the best solutions. An earthquake occurred at Van City on 23 October 2011 at 13:41 local time. The magnitude, moment ... more An earthquake occurred at Van City on 23 October 2011 at 13:41 local time. The magnitude, moment magnitude and depth of earthquake were respectively MI:6.7, Mw:7.0 and 19.07 km. Van city centre and its surrounding villages were affected from this destructive earthquake. Many buildings were ruined and approximately 600 people died. Acquisition and use of geospatial data is very important and crucial for the management of such kind of natural disasters. In this paper, the role of national and international geospatial data in the management of Van earthquake is investigated.. With an international collaboration with Charter, pre and post-earthquake satellite images were acquired in 24 hours following the Earthquake. Also General Command of Mapping (GCM), the national mapping agency of Turkey, produced the high resolution multispectral orthophotos of the region. An Approach for Semi-Automatic Extraction of Features from Aerial Photographs

Aerial photographs have been evaluated manually by the operators for the extraction of the vector... more Aerial photographs have been evaluated manually by the operators for the extraction of the vector data to produce photogrammetric maps. In the recent years the developments, in the photogrammetry, provides to perform these extraction processes automatically. In this study, a new semi-automatic feature extraction approach, based on the segmentation of the images using color-differences of the pixels and the propogation of fronts by the Level Set algorithms, is developed. An object-oriented application software is also developed to test the capabilities of the developed method. Some semi-automatic feature extraction applications are made by the help of the developed software using 1:4000 and 1:35000 scale black/white aerial photographs for determining the capabilities of this method. The results of the tests show that this method can be used for the extraction of some features from aerial photographs for GIS and the production of the photogrammetric maps.
