Literature has acknowledged the role of value congruence and job control in determining clinicians' psychological well-being and depressive symptoms. However, potential mediators of this association have been scarcely examined. This study aimed to test the mediating role of moral distress in the relationship between value congruence and job control, on the one hand, and depression, on the other hand. A cross-sectional study involving physicians, nurses, and residents working in 7 intensive care units in the north of Italy was conducted. Public Beliefs and Attitudes towards Depression in Italy: A National Survey

Background: Previous studies have shown that attitudes towards depression may be influenced by co... more Background: Previous studies have shown that attitudes towards depression may be influenced by country-specific social and cultural factors. A survey was carried out to collect beliefs on and attitudes toward depression in Italy, which has an established community-based mental health system. Methods: A telephone survey was carried out in a probabilistic sample aged $15 years. A 20-item questionnaire was administered to explore knowledge of depression, stigma, causal beliefs, treatment preference, and help-seeking attitudes. Results: Of the 1001 participants, 98% were aware of depression, and 62% had experienced it, either directly or indirectly. A widespread belief (75%) was that people suffering from depression should avoid talking about their problem. A minority of the sample viewed depression as a condition that should be managed without recourse to external help or a ''socially dangerous'' illness. Among perceived causes of depression, most respondents mentioned life stressors or physical strains. Psychologists were often indicated as an adequate source of professional help. Half of the sample believed that depression should be pharmacologically treated, but drugs were often seen as addictive. Referring to a primary care physician (PCP) was considered embarrassing; furthermore, many people thought that PCPs are too busy to treat patients suffering from depression. Conclusions: Our findings indicate that depression is seen as a reaction to significant life events that should be overcome with the support of significant others or the help of health professionals (mainly psychologists). However, there are still barriers to the disclosure of depressive symptoms to PCPs, and concerns about the addictive effect of antidepressants. In the presence of a gap between people's beliefs and what health professionals consider appropriate for the treatment of depression, a ''shared decision making'' approach to treatment selection should be adopted taking into account the patients' preference for psychological interventions to ensure active compliance with effective treatments.

The term auditory disability (AD) means the presence of auditory symptoms due to hearing loss. Until now the audiometric threshold cut-off between the presence or absence of AD was not clear. Objectives. In this study we attempted to define the value of audiometric threshold that could be considered as the limit between the presence or absence of weakness of auditory function, considered as the threshold at the 95th percentile of subjects that did not report AD. Methods. The study group consisted of 1641 males, 891 normally hearing and 750 affected by noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) Each subject was submitted to a questionnaire specifically created in order to determine the presence of AD. Results. Statistical analysis confirmed the reliability of answers to items. AD was present in 577 subjects, not all affected by NIHL. The aim of this study was to determine the relationship existing between auditory disability, acc... more The aim of this study was to determine the relationship existing between auditory disability, according to WHO 1980, and pure tone audiometry threshold in noise induced hearing loss. Disability was evaluated on the basis of a questionnaire submitted to 286 subjects with acoustic trauma. Answers obtained were considered reliable on the basis of statistical analysis. Results showed that subjects with disability have an higher pure tone threshold than subjects without auditory disability. However it appears difficult to determine a precise threshold level ever which auditory disability may be considered present. The Authors suggest that this limit could be determined on the basis of pure tone threshold at the 10th centile of the group of subjects with disability or at the 90th centile of subjects without disability.

Nevertheless, over the last few decades injuries at work have continued to constitute a significant problem. The aim of this study was to examine accident risk perception in a sample of 45 subjects employed in the electricity sector and to relate their risk perception to personality characteristics, cognitive functioning, and personal and professional history. The instruments used were: "Cognitive Behavioral Assessment 2.0", the "Workplace safety questionnaire" (an Italian questionnaire on safety at work), and a battery of neuropsychological tests. Findings show that electricity (current variability) was perceived as the most serious risk factor, while the most frequent perceived risk factors for accidents were accidental falls, cuts and bruises. METHODS Semi-structured interviews were conducted, to assess the quality of work life through the identification of the most important indicators and to evaluate the degree of satisfaction and the importance of each indicator. 112 health operators were interviewed. All workers belonged to the same local health service in North West Italy. The Constructed Meaning Scale (CMS), originally developed in the United States by Fife in 1995, is a brief 8-item survey investigating the subjective meaning that patients associate with their disease. The purpose of this study was to validate an Italian version of the CMS in a sample of patients with chronic disabling disease. The validation process consisted of 4 steps: (1) creation of an Italian version (translation and back translation); (2) administration of the translated version to a small sample of patients affected by different types of disease to verify its comprehensibility; (3) administration of the final version to a sample of 122 patients affected by chronic disabling conditions; (4) statistical analysis. We created a new questionnaire by integration of other well consolidated psychometric tests to better investigate all the aspects that contribute in determining the hearing aid benefit, also considering as important some areas that are not usually considered (spatiality and quality of sound). We started from a 36-item questionnaire divided in six subscales (spatiality and quality of signal, intelligibility in silence, background noise intelligibility, averseness and reverberation), and submitted it to patients before hearing aid application and at 2-3 months after that. In this period, researchers have elaborated progressively more complex explanations for it. Despite the attempts to examine mobbing closely, and to define it accurately, further investigation, aimed at quantifying the factors that characterize it, is still needed. This study proposes a method for assessing mobbing and the personality features linked to it. The model was tested on a sample of 29 outpatients (19 males, 10 females) asking medical assistance for work-related psychopathological problems. Focusing on the occupational history and work environment, a psychological diagnosis (DSM IV-axis I) was made for 27 of them: 14 cases of generalized anxiety disorder, 6 subjects with depressive disorder, 1 dysthymic disorder, 1 post-traumatic stress disorder, 2 cases of adaptation disorder, 3 patients with personality disorder. This study assesses, the psychological features of the sample of 276 subjects (114 males, 162females) admitted to a unit of Occupational Medicine, using Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory MMPI-2. Increase in score over 65 cut off compared to clinical scales was found out: Hypochondria, Depression, Hysteria, Paranoia and compared to content scale: Anxiety and Health concerns. No significant different resulted between males and females as regards clinical scales.
