The extent to which we can rely on the information supplied by a test for a specific evaluation purpose would depend on the level of accuracy of such information. Tests are validated according to the evaluation purpose of its results. A test is also used if its results are reliable, i.e. its consistency in measuring what it is out to measure. There are four major types of tests validity: content validity, construct validity, criterion related validity and face validity. Each one is emphasized, more than the others, with a specific type of attribute. The thrust of this article is to x-ray validity and reliability of tests as an instrument for evaluating teaching and learning.

Introduction One of the innovative elements in the curriculum of the new Nigeria educational system otherwise known as 9-3-4 system is the introduction of several new school subjects at primary and secondary levels of education. Undoubtedly, Civic Education is one of the subjects newly introduced in the Nigeria school curriculum. Its inclusion in the curriculum and elevation to the status of a compulsory subject to all students in Primary and secondary school levels of the Nigeria educational system is an indication of its perceived importance to Nigerians (NERDC, 2012). Mbang, Okobia and Oyibe (2014) maintain that there are different definitions of Civic Education by different authors. According to them, Civic Education has been defined as an advanced Social Studies, citizenship education and even general studies. Others hold that Civic Education should be seeen as educational, learning or professional activities carried out to enable people understand the ideas of democracy, develop reasonable commitment to the values and principles of democracy, be motivated to identify with areas of the political process they can participate in, and what they can do to influence political outcome and thereby improve the quality of government and governance (Oyeniyi, 2013). This implies therefore that Civic Education is the discipline which the society uses to propagate the ideas, values and principles of democracy to the present and future generations. Hence, Mbang, et al (2014) maintain that Civic Education is a discipline that inculcates sound moral values of democracy and good governance in the youths. This may equally inform Oyeniyi's (2013:92) view that Civic Education is expected to: Equip individuals in a society with the basic rules and institutional characteristics of democratic political systems and knowledge about working of government, constitution processes of public affairs, democratic rights and practices and roles of citizens. This study examined the effect of socioeconomic status of parents on the academic achievement of ... more This study examined the effect of socioeconomic status of parents on the academic achievement of secondary school Economics students in Abakaliki Local Government Area of Ebonyi State. One hundred students were selected randomly across five randomly selected secondary schools in Abakaliki Local Government area. From each of the randomly selected schools, the researcher selected twenty students using stratified and simple random sampling technique. A number of related materials both of empirical and theoretical importance were reviewed. This study adopted a descriptive survey method and made use of questionnaire in facilitating data collection. The statistical description (such as mean and standard deviation), ANOVA and SPSS methods were employed for the analysis. Based on the result obtained, there is a significant effect of socioeconomic status (viz: level of income, family size and educational background) of parents on the academic achievement of their children and wards. Moreover, recommendations were made for teachers, parents, students, governments and curriculum developers on ways to improve academic achievement of students

This study investigated the influence of teachers' characteristics on the Implementation of Senio... more This study investigated the influence of teachers' characteristics on the Implementation of Senior Secondary School Economics in Onueke Education Zone. Four purpose and four research questions guided the study. The population of the study comprised 2,520 SS II students in all the schools in the four Local Government Areas that make up the zone. A sample of 280 SS II students was used for the study. A four point modified likert type questionnaire titled Teachers Characteristics on Implementation of Economics Curriculum Questionnaire (TCICQ) made up of 24 items was used. The instrument was validated by 3 experts in Social Science Education and Measurement and Evaluation. It was also subjected test re-test reliability given a coefficient of 0.84. The data was analysed with mean and standard deviation. The result indicated that teachers' professional qualifications, experiences, motivational tendencies have significant influence in the teaching and learning of Economics (curriculum implementation) in the secondary schools. Gender of the teacher does not influence his/her ability to teach. This paper recommended that government should only employ teachers with certificates in Economics Education to teach the subject, economics teachers should be trained and retrained to increase their experiences, that no teacher should teach Economics without instructional materials and that Field trip technique should be used extensively to teach Economics. The paper therefore concluded that the managers of Education in the study area should stimulate teachers' characteristics for effective implementation of school curriculums.

The importance of socialization cannot be over-emphasized. This is because no individual can live in isolation. Every individual continues to interact with one another to learn the proper way of doing things and to behave. Social studies education is the most effective vehicle through which socialization could be achieved in the life of the child. The paper presents the concepts of socialization and social studies, the objectives of social studies, various ways through which social studies education could achieve socialization in the child. Some of those ways include: The home (family), the school, the church, the community and the peer group. The paper made some recommendations.

It was argued in the paper that if Social Studies curriculum is properly planned and the content are well taught, it will instill in learners the knowledge, skills, values and attitudes of resolving problems intelligently instead of resorting to violence. Through teaching and learning social studies in schools, the factors that impede the actualization of national security will be identified not discussed. The paper also stressed the importance of Social Studies and its conceptualization. Peculiarities of Social Studies are presented with a view to realizing how they affect teaching of the student. An overview of security and sustainable national security were discussed as well as how to achieve it via effective Social Studies pedagogy. This is presented in a table showing the relationship between content areas of Social Studies and topics that relates to achieving national security.

This may have informed the views of Oyeniyi (2013:92) that Civic education is expected to equip individuals in a society with the basic rules and institutional characteristics of democratic political systems and knowledge about working of government, constitution processes of public affairs, democratic rights and practices and role of citizens to enable the citizens to understand, respect and promote democratic values. Create an environment that encourages individuals as well as collective responsible and informed participation in social and political process at the national, local and grassroots levels. National security is a concept and issue in the quest to secure lives and properties of individual for better living. The nature scope and philosophy of civic education provided it with the capacity to help people acquire knowledge skill, attitude value and positive disposition (norms) that are needed for effective democratic citizenship. The inclusion of civic education concept into social studies education will not only enhance national security but will also help in developing intellectual citizenship who in future will have to vote, serve in the army, pay taxes and other duties of a good citizen; for these to be realized, classroom practice must be changed towards inquiry and activity based teaching practice and professionalism must be enforced at all levels. It is recommended that; well prepared and stable civic education curriculum should be designed for every level of the Nigerian school programme. There is an urgent need for the Nigerian government to develop relevant and functional civic education curriculum for the various educational levels in the country. Civic education should be the central goal of the Nigerian educational system. Civic education should be given the right priority in Nigeria. Acquisition and demonstration of civic values and skills should be the main theme of the Nigerian school programme. This is because the prosperity of a country does not depend on the strength of its fortification or revenue but rather, on the number of responsible citizens and men of character.

This paper critically examined the place of Social Studies curriculum in the inculcation of Entrepreneurial skills into the learner. To promote a holistic teaching and learning that will make a total child, the introduction of entrepreneurship education into the Social Studies curriculum was obvious and important to drive education for self-reliance and national development. The objectives of Social Studies and entrepreneurship education to national development form part of the nexus of this work. Again, the paper considered the challenges to the attainment of Social Studies objectives and entrepreneurship education in the Nigeria education system. On the strength of the findings, suggested way forward and conclusions and were made. One of the ways forward is that, there is need for a committee managing and supervising projects to ensure implementation of project design for a particular developmental programme in schools.
