The aim of this study was to assess the environmental impact of socio-cultural practices on the w... more The aim of this study was to assess the environmental impact of socio-cultural practices on the water quality of River Ganga at the foothills of the Garhwal Himalayas in Uttarakhand State, India. The physico-chemical parameters that contributed to the temporal variation and pollution in the river were identified in this study. Principal component analysis (PCA) and Cluster analysis (CA) were used in the identification of anthropogenic factors (industrial, urban sewage, agricultural, land use and mining activities) and natural factors (soil erosion, weathering). The results of this study show that total coliform, fecal coliform, nitrate, sodium, phosphate, sulphate, TDS (Total dissolved solids), temperature, BOD (Biochemical oxygen demand), calcium and chloride are parameters significantly contributing to pollution load.

Tri-layer architectured epoxy composites with high electrical permittivity

Abstract In this work, epoxy composites filled with polypyrrole (ppy) coated paddy straw micro pa... more Abstract In this work, epoxy composites filled with polypyrrole (ppy) coated paddy straw micro particles exhibiting high electrical permittivity were prepared. Oxidative vapour phase polymerization was used to obtain thin ppy coating over straw particles. These single layered epoxy composites exhibited high electrical permittivity and were further used to prepare tri-layer architectured composites in which an epoxy-graphene (−ve k) composite layer was stacked in-between two epoxy-ppy-straw (+ve k) composite layers. The layered composites displayed an even higher electrical permittivities, 124.2 and 227.7 (1 kHz) and suppressed tanδ 0.055 and 0.5 at 33 wt% and 38 wt% filler concentrations respectively. The tanδ showed strong frequency dependence and their minima shifted to higher frequencies. The thickness of +ve k layers were reduced progressively and corresponding permittivities were recorded which showed a linear increase as the thickness ratio of layers (−ve k/+ve k) increased.

Sustainable approach towards utilizing Makrana marble waste for making water resistant green composite materials

During marble mining, processing, cutting and polishing, more than 12 MT (million tons) of marble... more During marble mining, processing, cutting and polishing, more than 12 MT (million tons) of marble waste is produced in the state of Rajasthan, India, which is now a major environmental issue. The marble waste used in the present study was collected from Makrana marble mining, Rajasthan. The major mineral present in marble waste were calcite (CaCO 3), dolomite (CaMg(CO 3) 2) and quartz (SiO 2). Composite materials were made using marble waste with epoxy resin. Textile fibres such as jute, cotton and glass fibres were used as reinforcing materials. The hybrid composites exhibited 54% better flexural strength (48.48 MPa) than the commercially available medium density fibre boards (24.23 MPa). Water absorption and thickness swelling values were less than 1% in green composites. The microstructural study of fractured surface of hybrid composite showed good interfacial bonding between the marble waste, fibre and the matrix. The findings of this study showed a promising outcome in introducing a new class of hybrid green composites to the composite industry and society for multifunctional applications, creating an avenue for circular economy with major environmental benefits.

Epoxy-Polypyrrole-Straw composites: Towards higher dielectric constant and lower water absorption

Abstract Epoxy composites exhibiting high dielectric constant, low dissipation and reduced water ... more Abstract Epoxy composites exhibiting high dielectric constant, low dissipation and reduced water absorption were prepared using a functionalized agro-waste as filler. The approach involved thin coating of Polypyrrole (PPy) conducting polymer over micron sized paddy straw (St) particles accomplished via vapour phase polymerization. The PPy coated particles filled epoxy composites exhibited a significant ∼315% increase in dielectric constant (∼23 at 1 KHz), low dissipation factor (0.017 at 1 KHz) and marked reduction in water absorption (∼50%; 360 h) as compared to their counterparts filled with uncoated particles. The successful preparation of these composites with improved performance and lightweight paves the way for very low cost sustainable and eco-friendly materials for high end electronics and sensing applications.

Self-assembled AlGaN nanowall networks have been grown heteroepitaxially on sapphire (0001) subst... more Self-assembled AlGaN nanowall networks have been grown heteroepitaxially on sapphire (0001) substrate using laser molecular beam epitaxy (LMBE) technique. The effect of growth temperature on the formation of AlGaN nanowall network structure has been studied in the range of 500-700°C. It is found that the growth of AlGaN under strong N-rich flux condition at a high growth temperature of 700°C is conducive for the formation of selfassembled nanowall network. In-situ reflection high energy electron diffraction exhibits the three-dimensional growth of the AlGaN nanowall network structure oriented along c-axis. The nanowall width and pore size are measured to be 10-40 and 30-70 nm, respectively, by using field emission scanning electron microscopy. From room temperature photoluminescence measurement, a strong ultraviolet (UV) emission at about 3.52 eV due to band-to-band transition is obtained for the AlGaN nanowall structure with a high UV-to-yellow luminescence intensity ratio indicating a good optical quality. The grown AlGaN nanowall network is suitable for the applications in field emitters, photo-detectors and other nitride-based optoelectronic devices.

Effect of nitridation temperature on formation and properties of GaN nanowall networks on sapphire (0 0 0 1) grown by laser MBE

Vertical aligned GaN nanowall networks (NWN) have been grown on sapphire (0 0 0 1) substrates usi... more Vertical aligned GaN nanowall networks (NWN) have been grown on sapphire (0 0 0 1) substrates using laser assisted molecular beam epitaxy (LMBE) by tuning the sapphire pre-nitridation temperature (200-600°C). Field emission scanning electron microscopy studies showed the formation of hexagonal shaped vertical GaN NWN with wall width of 8-20 nm on high temperature (600°C) nitridated sapphire whereas flower shape granular GaN structure with grain size of 50-240 nm was obtained on low temperature (200°C) nitridated sapphire. The crystalline properties of the GaN NWN have been studied using high resolution X-ray diffraction (HR-XRD). The results show that the full width at half maximum of the GaN(0 0 0 2) X-ray rocking curve has a relatively low value compared to previous reports of hetero-epitaxial grown GaN NWN on sapphire and other substrates. Raman spectroscopy measurements revealed the presence of compressive stress in film whereas tensile stress in GaN NWN structures which is also complimented by HR-XRD analysis. The room temperature photoluminescence spectroscopy measurement for NWN having tip width 8-20 nm showed a 94 meV blue-shift in near band edge emission, even though NWN experienced with tensile stress, which confirm the observation of quantum size effect. The hetero-epitaxial growth of porous GaN NWN with high crystalline quality holds promise for applications in field of nitride based sensors and the enhancement of light extraction efficiency in optoelectronics devices.

Growth and characterizations of various GaN nanostructures on C-plane sapphire using laser MBE

We have grown various GaN nanostructures such as three-dimensional islands, nanowalls and nanocol... more We have grown various GaN nanostructures such as three-dimensional islands, nanowalls and nanocolumns on c-plane sapphire substrates using laser assisted molecular beam epitaxy (LMBE) system. The shape of the GaN nanostructures was controlled by using different nucleation surfaces such as bare and nitridated sapphire with GaN or AlN buffer layers. The structural and surface morphological properties of grown GaN nanostructures were characterized by ex-situ high resolution x-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy and field emission scanning electron microscopy. The symmetric x-ray rocking curve along GaN (0002) plane shows that the GaN grown on pre-nitridated sapphire with GaN or AlN buffer layer possesses good crystalline quality compared to sapphire without nitridation. The Raman spectroscopy measurements revealed the wurtzite phase for all the GaN nanostructures grown on c-sapphire.

We have grown AlGaN (0001) epitaxial layers on sapphire (0001) by using laser molecular beam epit... more We have grown AlGaN (0001) epitaxial layers on sapphire (0001) by using laser molecular beam epitaxy (LMBE) technique. The growth was carried out using laser ablation of AlxGa1-x liquid metal alloy under r.f. nitrogen plasma ambient. Before epilayer growth, the sapphire nitradation was performed at 700 °C using r.f nitrogen plasma followed by AlGaN layer growth. The in-situ reflection high energy electron diffraction (RHEED) was employed to monitor the substrate nitridation and AlGaN epitaxial growth. High resolution x-ray diffraction showed wurtzite hexagonal growth of AlGaN layer along c-axis. An absorption bandgap of 3.97 eV is obtained for the grown AlGaN layer indicating an Al composition of more than 20 %. Using ellipsometry, a refractive index (n) value of about 2.19 is obtained in the visible region.

Objectives and hypothesis: To examine the influence of gender of the baby on exclusive breastfeed... more Objectives and hypothesis: To examine the influence of gender of the baby on exclusive breastfeeding and incidence of postnatal depression (PND). We hypothesise that in a society with a male gender bias there may be more PND and less exclusive breastfeeding of the girl child. Design: Prospective study. Setting: The study was conducted in an urban, tertiary hospital in Delhi. Participants: Mothers delivering normally with their babies roomed-in.1537 eligible women participated in the study. Primary and secondary outcome measures: Exclusive breastfeeding within the first 48 h of life and score on the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS) were recorded. Results: 3466 babies were born in the hospital. There were 792 girls for every 1000 boys. Among primiparous women, the sex ratio was 901 girls per 1000 boys. For second babies, the sex ratio was 737:1000. If the first child was a girl the birth ratio fell to 632. 1026 mothers were exclusively breastfeeding. Exclusive breastfeeding of boys was significantly higher (70.8% vs 61.5%, p<0.001). The EPDS score was significantly higher with the birth of girls (EPDS 6.0±3.39 vs 5.4±2.87, p<0.01). Women with an EPDS score >11 were less likely to exclusively breastfeed (p<0.01). Conclusions: The results point to a pro-male gender bias evidenced by a low sex ratio at birth, higher EPDS score in mothers of girls and less breastfeeding of female children.

A hybrid denture is one that is fabricated over a metal framework and retained by screws threaded... more A hybrid denture is one that is fabricated over a metal framework and retained by screws threaded into the implants. The anterior part of a mandibular hybrid denture is fixed on implants while the posterior part of the denture is extended and cantilevered from implants. This article presents the fabrication of a mandibular implant retained hybrid prosthesis. A total of four implants were placed in the mandibular arch. Framework was waxed, plastic castable abutments were used, casting was done, denture teeth were waxed to the hybrid framework and a final wax try-in was performed to verify and correct maxillomandibular relations before processing. The prosthesis was inserted after verification of occlusion, retention and to cast recovered and the fit was refined until the framework seated passively on the master cast. The mandibular achieve greater masticatory function and psychological satisfaction than with conventional over-dentures. Producing a passivefitting substructure for a fixed removable screw retained hybrid prosthesis is one of the most technically complex tasks in implant dentistry. The technique presented describes a step by step procedure for achieving a perfectly fitted mandibular hybrid prosthesis.
