This paper analyzes the way the content of the Journal of Environmental Economics and Management ... more This paper analyzes the way the content of the Journal of Environmental Economics and Management (JEEM) has developed over the last 40 years. We have classified the articles in the journal into five dimensions: content, methods, environmental media (pollutants and resources), cross-cutting issues and the regional dimension of studies. Up to about 10 years ago, non-market valuation and cost-benefit analysis, natural resource economics and environmental policy instruments were the subjects regularly representing the lion's share of the articles published in the journal. Thereafter we register a significant shift towards a more diversified array of research areas, with climate change and energy issues finding their way into the journal. In addition, increasing methodological plurality becomes apparent, reflected in a significant shift away from economic theory and towards empirical approaches. Schnelle Entscheidungen und innovative Mobilitatskonzepte sind notwendig, damit Stadte klimafreundlicher werden konnen. Haben sich Kommunen aber einmal festgelegt, ist der Umstieg auf einen alternativen Ansatz mitunter schwierig und teuer - es konnen Pfadabhangigkeiten entstehen. Dabei weis niemand derzeit genau, welche Technologien sich in den kommenden Jahrzehnten durchsetzen werden. Dies gilt gleichermasen auch fur zahlreiche Bereiche bei der Umsetzung der Energiewende. Production results in pollution, which is a public bad. Pollution abatement can be achiedved either by restricting poduction output or by using labor. We consider how the first best allocation varies with polulation size. consumers are unambiguously worse off when the population is larger. However, surprisingly, there is no single optimal policy on how pollution and labor should vary with population size. For standard models of preferences and technology it might be desirable either to increase or to reduce emissions and/or labor, depending on parameters. Despite such ambiguity in the first best level of emissions, the Pigouvian tax wihich implements the first best is a non-decreasing function of the population size. Intergenerational Fairness in a Sequential Dictator Game With Social Interaction

We modify the traditional dictator game by introducing 3 generations A, B and C. A takes an arbit... more We modify the traditional dictator game by introducing 3 generations A, B and C. A takes an arbitrary share of a pie and passes the rest to B. B divides the rest of the pie between her and C. We find that this sequential dictator game increases generosity with respect to comparable traditional dictator games. Introducing a treatment with a social interaction between A and B on the one hand and B and C on the other hand leads to a higher share of passed money for both A and B. Introducing another treatment where it is unclear to B if a subject passed the share or if the passed share was generated by a random process, we show that B becomes more parsimonious. For all treatments, B reciprocates A’s behavior in her decision upon the share which C receives.

We report results from a Cournot triopoly experiment conducted with different subject pools: Germ... more We report results from a Cournot triopoly experiment conducted with different subject pools: German students, Malaysian students, and Malaysian managers. We find that Malaysian students perform significantly more competitively than both Malaysian managers and German students. Moreover, the Nash equilibrium point quite accurately describes the behavior of German students and Malaysian managers but not of Malaysian students, even though the quantities selected by Malaysian students are closer to the Nash equilibrium than to the collusive or competitive quantities.

We study long-term incentives for polluting and regulated firms to invest in advanced abatement t... more We study long-term incentives for polluting and regulated firms to invest in advanced abatement technologies, when some new technology is available but an even better technology will be expected in the future. Firms can invest only once. We find that depending on the adoption fixed costs all possible combinations of investment patters can occur in social optimum. Further we show that if the regulator anticipates the arrival of the new technology he can decentralize socially optimal allocation by charging Pigouvian tax or issuing tradable permits through announcing his policy and setting ex post optimal policy levels, after firms have invested. --

Reciprocity and Giving in a Consecutive Three-Person Dictator Game with Social Interaction

We study pure indirect reciprocity by setting up a modified dictator game with three players A, B... more We study pure indirect reciprocity by setting up a modified dictator game with three players A, B, and C acting sequentially. Subject A takes a share of a pie and passes the rest to subject B, while B divides the rest between herself and C. We find that this consecutive three-person dictator game increases generosity compared with the traditional two-person dictator game. We analyze the influence of social interaction and uncertainty. In treatments with certainty we observe pure indirect reciprocity: B indirectly reciprocates for A’s behavior in the decision on how generous to be to C.
