The existence of myths or folktales about origins among various communities and societies are sub... more The existence of myths or folktales about origins among various communities and societies are subjects of academic discourse. These stories are observable among people, as they offer believers explanation that fulfill their cultural and spiritual needs. Academically, they provide valuable insights for comparative analysis. This article examines the origin stories prevalent among the Tamu (the Gurungs) of Nepal and the Naxi ethnic minority in China's Yunnan province. The Tamu story postulates their origin can be traced back to the mythical Khè Ku (nine paternal ancestors) and Mhā Ngi (seven maternal ancestors). Similarly, the Naxi story features nine paternal and seven maternal progenitors despite the fact that these communities being located in different countries and speaking distinct languages. While further studies are needed, the genetic affinity between the Naxi community and the Tamu community (and other indigenous nationalities of Nepal) suggests that the inhabitants of this region embody contemporary manifestations of a shared prehistoric lineage or horde.

Definitional Standpoint of Philanthropy in the India Philanthropy Report 2026: A review

The quest for understanding 'philanthropy' has been there since long time. Its root goes back to ... more The quest for understanding 'philanthropy' has been there since long time. Its root goes back to the Ancient Greek time or even before. Many philosophers and writers contributed towards systematizing the concept, yet it is evolving. The Greek word philanthrōpía which combines philo (to love) and anthrōpos (humankind) is the modern word 'philanthropy'. The Greek framing was civic and civilizational (concept of paideia) suggesting that giving was a virtue of the educated elite, a mark of noble character rather than religious duty (Philanthropia, Vol. 1, No.1 2024). However, there existed equivalent words in various other language communities, such as Dayadharma, Daan and so on. All this is largely under the classical western definitions of philanthropy. On the other hand, over the period it can also be seen that philanthropy is reduced to administrative frameworks, such as, under the US Internal Revenue Code (e.g., Section 501(c)(3)) or Charity Commission guidelines in the UK. These provide legal definitions, however, discard the moral requirement of "love." Recently, in their series, "India Philanthropy Report 2026" was published by Bain & Company and Dasra making a huge suggestion as "The step change India needs: Strengthening philanthropy infrastructure to accelerate private giving". This certainly attracts academic attention across the globe as the report is a rich document to analyze. While there can be different angles of review, this review is entirely focused on understanding fundamentals of philanthropy as such delving deep down to conceptualizes and operationalizes philanthropy. This has been done both explicitly and through the structural choices made in the report itself. 1. The Institutional Identity of Dasra as a Definitional Frame Together with Bain & Company the report is co-authored by Dasra, whose very name carries a definitional statement: Dasra, meaning "enlightened giving" in Sanskrit, is a pioneering strategic philanthropic organization that aims for a transformed India where a billion thrive with dignity and equity. This Sanskrit etymology immediately signals that the report does not adopt a neutral or purely financial definition-philanthropy here is purposive giving oriented toward equity and dignity, not merely charitable transfer. 2. Philanthropy Defined Through Its Components: Financial Contributions + Time + Skills Rather than offering a single dictionary definition, the report builds its understanding of philanthropy through enumeration of what it comprises. In the report, Gurpreet Sunny Singh of RoundGlass Foundation articulates the clearest practitioner definition as: ... philanthropy is the strategic deployment of resources for long-term public good through financial contributions, time, and skills. This is a multi-dimensional definition goes beyond money, encompassing human capital and expertise as legitimate forms of giving.
