PINOCCHIA BAT YIFTACH. or, I WANT TO BE A REAL GIRL

Pseudo-Philo, a first-century alternate version of the Biblical story from Genesis to the death of King Saul, tells her story in far greater detail, even giving her the name that she is denied in Judges. This paper proposes that the story of Jephthah's daughter actually predates the story of the Binding of Isaac and, indeed, that it is the course for Isaac's story.

With fury like a hurricane to earth did you descend, And strong in deed were you just like the storm. Being unto being then your storm-wind's breath did bend, And men's souls did you bless but scourge their form. You stirred the stiff-necked people into agitated light And castigated them with whirlpools hot. -You sought Me on your stormy heights throughout the day and night And found Me not. On wings of storm-fed fire did you soar into the sky, Consuming all who failed to reach their best. Sun-strong, you made whole worlds burnt-off'rings to the One on High And flame-refined them 'til they passed your test. The soul of holy poetry your flame enkindled then, Brought into being from a youthful nought. -You sought Me in the searing heat of your abyssal den And found Me not. My messenger did come to you and gently bent your ear; He placed it by the still life of My earth. Growing things moved 'round you, and at last you came to hear As seedling after seedling had its birth. In silence hammered blood on blood, quite overcoming you, So whole, so soft, so motherly and warm. -When you were forced to search within, to see yourself anew, You found My Form.

Matthew's Parable of the wedding guest may be derivative of the Enochic traditions. It also bears striking resemblance to Talmudic sources, as well as the Prometheus legend and some Hassidic tales.

I shall then recount-again, briefly-the Shoah-related events of the war years in Bulgaria and, in a separate section, the story of how the proposed deportation of the Bulgarian Jews was stopped. Finally, I shall offer my assessment of the significance of the various contributors to the rescue of the Bulgarian Jews and the significance of their rescue in the peace process. "G*d was very weak at that time, because he [sic] had no friends in Germany. 1 2 According to the tradition, G*d has no other hands than ours, and during the Shoah, G*d was very alone." As we shall see, however, G*d did have friends in Bulgaria.
