Small Angle Neutron Scattering (SANS) investigation on the self-assembly sodium dodecyl sulfate (... more Small Angle Neutron Scattering (SANS) investigation on the self-assembly sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) molecules as a function of concentration and additives has been carried out. SANS spectrometer which has been completely installed at the neutron scattering laboratory (NSL) BATAN in Serpong, Indonesia has played most important role to determine the growth (size) and also the shapes of a micelle structure. In this works we report that spherical micelle structure with a radius of 16.7 Å will transform to ellipsoidal or rod-like micelle structure with the long axis extends up to 50 Å by increasing the concentration of SDS. Similar to that the micelle structures change by addition of salt in SDS micellar solutions. Keywords: nanostructure, micelle, self-assembly

SMARTer, a 36-meter small angle neutron scattering (SANS) spectrometer was installed at the Neutr... more SMARTer, a 36-meter small angle neutron scattering (SANS) spectrometer was installed at the Neutron Scattering Laboratory (NSL), National Nuclear Energy Agency of Indonesia-BATAN in Serpong, Indonesia and has performed the experiment for studying the magnetic structures of Cu(NiFe), CuCo and FeSiBNbCu metal alloys. The experiments were conducted at room temperature and up to 1 T (10 kOe) of external magnetic field. At zero fields, isotropic scattering identified as nuclear scattering is dominant. When a magnetic field is applied in a horizontal direction perpendicular to the neutron beam, the response of the magnetic scattering permits extraction of the field-induced rearrangement of the magnetic moment. With increasing field the distortion is more pronounced and the magnetic scattering dominates the intensity and affects the peak position. Radial and angular averaging from experimental data are given to show the details of magnetic structures.

Therefore, it is necessary to routinely monitor the condition of workers, among others, with a whole-body counter (WBC) either for daily activities or in a radiation emergency. In this research 78 male and female workers with an average age of 44.51 years old who have been worked for 1 up to more than 30 years at the Center for Technology of Radiation Safety and Metrology (PTKMR) - BATAN in 2018-2019 have been determined with standard procedures. The results showed that the average K-40 count for the year 2018 was 3767.35 ± 975.33 Bq. Among the 80 participants tested, internal radio-isotopic contamination with Cs-137 was detected in one person, but the levels were marginal and just exceeded the detection limit (250 Bq/body). This average value was lower than that of the previous year (2017) i.e. 4274.74 ± 740.85 Bq for 43 respondents. There is no positive correlation between radio...

Saat ini, satu Pusat dari lembaga pemerintah ini memiliki tugas untuk melakukan penelitian dan pengembangan serta layanan di bidang keselamatan dan metrologi radiasi. Tujuan dari makalah ini adalah membahas semua kegiatan yang dilakukan oleh Pusat ini yang mencakup banyak aspek dalam pengkajian keselamatan pekerja, masyarakat dan lingkungan. Untuk metrologi radiasi, sumber standar laboratorium dosimetri (SSDL) dalam layanan kalibrasi dibangun untuk mendukung keberhasilan dalam radioterapi, di mana pencapaian tertinggi adalah sebagai Lembaga yang Ditunjuk untuk Radiasi Pengion. Penelitian kesehatan mencakup pemanfaatan sinar gamma untuk mengembangkan bahan vaksin, diagnosis penyakit metabolik dengan teknik kedokteran nuklir dan mikrodosimetri dalam penilaian radiodiagnostik. Untuk radioekologi dan biologi radiasi, salah satu penelitian utama adalah penentuan dosis efektif dan studi epidemiologi di Mamuju sebagai daerah radiasi latar belakang tinggi (HBRA) yang memberikan kesempatan unik untuk mempelajari efek kesehatan dari paparan radiasi kronis tingkat rendah pada manusia. Melalui kerja sama dengan Universitas Hirosaki, penting untuk menilai kesehatan dan status fisik serta kerusakan asam sitogenetik dan deoksinukleotida (DNA) dalam limfosit populasi lokal yang dapat memberikan informasi yang berharga. Studi dosimetri dilakukan dengan pengukuran langsung di area lapangan, termasuk analisis paparan radiasi eksternal dari tingkat dosis gamma di dalam dan di luar ruangan. Penentuan radiasi internal dilakukan dengan mengambil sampel makanan, urin, air minum, dan air inhalasi (radon). Studi epidemiologis melalui respon sitogenetik dari tempat tinggal yang didukung oleh γ-H2AX, G0 dan G2 micronucleus, dan genotip TP53 dari daerah penelitian menunjukkan bahwa tidak ada perbedaan yang signifikan dalam efek radiasi alami dengan kontrol. Studi radiologi kelautan dan pemantauan radionuklida di seluruh kepulauan Indonesia juga tidak menunjukkan suatu dampak negatif. Praktik kedaruratan nuklir pun juga harus dilakukan secara rutin di Pusat ini untuk memperkuat budaya keselamatan dan keamanan. Historically BATAN was established to investigate the negative impacts of nuclear explosions previously conducted in the Pacific area. However, this governmental institute is presently tasked to carry out research and development as well as services in the field of radiation safety and metrology. Therefore, this study aim to determine the activities carried out by BATAN in assessing the safety of workers and the environment. For instance, a standard source of dosimetry laboratory (SSDL) is used in calibration services to successfully support radiotherapy, with the highest achievement in the Designated Safety Assessments ... Institute (DI) for Ionizing Radiation. The health research covers the application of gamma rays to create malaria vaccine, diagnose metabolic diseases with nuclear medicine techniques, and microdosimetry through radiodiagnostic assessment. This study also determined the effective dose and epidemiological study of radioecology and radiation biology in Mamuju (HBRA), which provides a unique opportunity to examine the health effects of chronic low-level radiation exposure to humans. Furthermore, the authors collaborated with Hirosaki University to obtain valuable information on the essential need to assess the health and physical status as well as cytogenetic and deoxynucleotide acid (DNA) damages in the lymphocytes of local populations. Dosimetry study was conducted by direct measurement in the field area by analyzing external radiation exposure of indoor and outdoor gamma dose rate. The internal radiation assessment was conducted by taking urine and inhaled air (radon) from the residents. Studies through the cytogenetic response supported by γ-H2AX, G0, and G2 micronucleus assays and TP53 showed no impacts on the natural radiation with significant differences compared to the control. Marine radioecology studies and radionuclides monitoring throughout the Indonesian archipelago showed no negative impacts as well. Nuclear emergency practice needs to be routinely conducted in the Center for strengthening safety and security cultures.

Comprehensive exposure assessments from the viewpoint of health in a unique high natural background radiation area, Mamuju, Indonesia

Mamuju is one of the regions in Indonesia which retains natural conditions but has relatively hig... more Mamuju is one of the regions in Indonesia which retains natural conditions but has relatively high exposure to natural radiation. The goals of the present study were to characterize exposure of the entire Mamuju region as a high natural background radiation area (HNBRA) and to assess the existing exposure as a means for radiation protection of the public and the environment. A cross-sectional study method was used with cluster sampling areas by measuring all parameters that contribute to external and internal radiation exposures. It was determined that Mamuju was a unique HNBRA with the annual effective dose between 17 and 115 mSv, with an average of 32 mSv. The lifetime cumulative dose calculation suggested that Mamuju residents could receive as much as 2.2 Sv on average which is much higher than the average dose of atomic bomb survivors for which risks of cancer and non-cancer diseases are demonstrated. A 36 m small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) spectrometer (SMARTer) has been installed at the end... more A 36 m small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) spectrometer (SMARTer) has been installed at the end of a 49 m long neutron guide tube and located in the neutron guide hall at the Neutron Scattering Laboratory (NSL), Serpong, Indonesia. At present, this is the largest SANS spectrometer in the Asia-Pacific region and consists of an 18 m long tube collimation system and another 18 m long tube to accommodate a 128 Â 128 3 He two-dimensional position-sensitive detector. The detector can be moved continuously from 1.5 to 18 m and can be shifted laterally by 0.1 m to cover a large range of Q, where Q is the magnitude of the scattering vector given by Q ¼ ð4=Þ sinð=2Þ, is the scattering angle and is the wavelength. By selecting the rotational speed of the velocity selector, the incident thermal neutron beam will have a wavelength in the range 3-6 Å and a Q range of 0.002-0.6 Å À1. The maximum neutron flux at the sample position is 4 Â 10 6 neutrons cm À2 s À1. Measurements of some standard samples using SMARTer are reported for inter-laboratory comparisons that show, for the first time, how SMARTer's capabilities compare with those of other prominent SANS instruments.

Fractal Structures on Fe3O4Ferrofluid: A Small-Angle Neutron Scattering Study

A small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) which is a powerful technique to reveal the large scale s... more A small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) which is a powerful technique to reveal the large scale structures was applied to investigate the fractal structures of water-based Fe 3 O 4 ferrofluid, magnetic fluid. The natural magnetite Fe 3 O 4 from iron sand of several rivers in East Java Province of Indonesia was extracted and purified using magnetic separator. Four different ferrofluid concentrations, i.e. 0.5, 1.0, 2.0 and 3.0 Molar (M) were synthesized through a coprecipitation method and then dispersed in tetramethyl ammonium hydroxide (TMAH) as surfactant. The fractal aggregates in ferrofluid samples were observed from their SANS scattering distributions confirming the correlations to their concentrations. The mass fractal dimension changed from about 3 to 2 as ferrofluid concentration increased showing a deviation slope at intermediate scattering vector q range. The size of primary magnetic particle as a building block was determined by fitting the scattering profiles with a log-normal sphere model calculation. The mean average size of those magnetic particles is about 60 − 100 Å in diameter with a particle size distribution σ = 0.5.

The mass of Pacific water entering the South China Sea will reach Batam Waters with radioactive contaminants. Batam Waters are part of the Karimata Strait which is the Extention Line of South China Sea so that it has the potential to receive 137Cs of radioactive contaminants from operational nuclear reactors discharged in the coastal regions of China. The purpose of the study is to find out the characteristics of 137Cs and obtain the current status of 137Cs as a baseline to minimize the impact of nuclear activities on the ecosystem of the waters of Batam, Indonesia. NEUTRON SCATTERING FACILITIES IN SERPONG. Description of seven neutron beam instruments installed... more NEUTRON SCATTERING FACILITIES IN SERPONG. Description of seven neutron beam instruments installed at four (out of six) beam ports of the Multi Purpose Reactor GA Siwabessy in Serpong is presented. The instruments consist of three diffractometers, three spectrometers and one neutron radiography facility. These instruments were meant to utilize neutrons produced by the Reactor, especially for research and development in materials science and technology. The latest conditions after thirteen years of their existence are also described including various and different changes that have taken places and affecting the condition and capabilities of the instruments. Next development programs are also mentioned to open the possibilities for participation and contribution. These include a proposal for a new neutron beam instrument, a Neutron Reflectometer, which will be installed at the S3 (empty) beam port for extending and completing the coverage of research range in materials science as well...

Initially the workshop was planned to be held in Jakarta in November 1998, but due to the political situation at that time i n Jakarta, the organizers postponed i t and moved i t to a more quiet place i n central Java, southeast of Jakarta.

Th... more Neutron scattering activities in Indonesia during last fiscal year are reported in this paper. The neutron beam facilities in Serpong include one diffractometer (DN1-M) for residual stress measurements, one diffractometer (FCD/TD) for single-crystal structure determinations and texture measurements, one high resolution powder diffractometer (HRPD), one neutron radiography facility (NRF), one triple axis spectrometer (TAS), one small angle neutron scattering spectrometer (SANS) and one high-resolution small-angle neutron scattering spectrometer (HRSANS). Four instruments related to this symposium among them are discussed. The FCD/TD, HRSANS and TAS are not working now because of some electronic troubles. NRF is working but not at its best condition. The HRPD, DN1-M and SANS are running well, and HRPD is used heavily. The latest situation of the reactor and its operation mode are also described briefly in connection with activities of the neutron scattering instruments.
