Geographers, especially those working in developing country contexts have often encountered impro... more Geographers, especially those working in developing country contexts have often encountered improvisation because it plays a critical social and cultural role. Engaging with anthropologist James Scott's conceptualisation of metiscontextual, practical and flexible skills and knowledgeand techneuniversal technical knowledgethis paper furthers the geographical scholarship on the politics of improvisation. The paper makes three main contributions. First, using metis and techne, it provides a new conceptual repertoire for making sense of improvisation. The paper places improvisation at the nexus of metis and techne. Second, it pushes the understanding of the morality of improvisation by attending to the role of relationships of power in morally and materially legitimising improvisations. Third, although states and experts celebrate and actively engage with improvisation, this paper demonstrates that they also create limits and boundaries for improvisation. These limits demonstrate a contradiction in experts' actions. This paper is based on a nine months ethnographic research on two energy projects carried out in 2012-13 in five villages in Bihar, an eastern state of India. It used participant observations, home tours, interviews and group discussions.
Influence of annealing on spin pumping in sputtered deposited Co/Pt bilayer thin films

We report on the ferromagnetic resonance study of the Co/Pt thin films as a function of the post ... more We report on the ferromagnetic resonance study of the Co/Pt thin films as a function of the post growth an-nealing. We found a significant increase in the spin mixing conductance, Gilbert damping parameter and in-homogeneous linewidth broadening with increase in annealing temperature. This behavior is correlated to the structural degradation of Co layer and in particular formation of Co x Pt 1−x alloy at the interface, which gives rise to increase in dissipation of spin current at the interface. The results are important for understanding of spin-orbit torque in Co/Pt bilayer structures.

ABSTRACT Weldment characteristics like bead width, bead height, penetration and weldment cross-se... more ABSTRACT Weldment characteristics like bead width, bead height, penetration and weldment cross-sectional areas are the factors that contribute the weld quality. Submerged arc welding (SAW) is mostly used to join the heavy structures around the world because of its high deposition rate and good weld quality. The present investigation deals with single pass double side full penetration SAW butt joints with process parameters for minimizing the welding distortions. The plates were without having any edge preparation and welded from both the sides using full factorial design of experiments with process parameters such that full penetration was achieved. The shrinkage forces from both the sides of the joints acted in opposite direction to minimize distortions. The process was modelled using adaptive neuro – fuzzy inference system (ANFIS) technique to predict the effects of process parameters on weldment characteristics and angular distortion of SAW butt joint. The ANFIS model has been developed on the basis of full factorial experimental data. The validation of ANFIS model has been also done for a number of test cases.

It is from Bonagiunta's mouth that the words emerge to codify both the new style that Dante exemplifies and the older tradition that could not reach such a height: "O frate, issa vegg'io", diss'elli, "il nodo/che 'l Notaro e Guittone e me ritenne/di qua dal dolce stil novo" ['O brother, I finally see,' he said, 'the obstacle/ that held the Notaro, Guittone, and me back/on this side of the sweet new style'] (Purgatorio 24.55-57). 1 One way that this poetic divide has been viewed is through the lens of Bonagiunta's sonnet Voi c'avete mutata la mainera, which criticized Guido Guinizzelli for changing the nature of the vernacular love lyric by importing into it the philosophical wisdom of Bologna. 2 The resulting binary, especially in the way that Dante exploits it, would seem to imply that the lyric before Guinizzelli, Cavalcanti, and Dante was bereft of philosophical content and intellectual pedigree. 10 I follow Antonelli's reading of this phrase 'e anzi considera vita tale stato' [and in fact considers such a state to be life].
