students who understand heritage the way we want them to and whether we are as forward thinking a... more students who understand heritage the way we want them to and whether we are as forward thinking about heritage as we want to be. I, myself, plan to adapt some of these ideas to my own teaching practices. It is also encouraging to see conversations about heritage gain permanent traction in archaeological discourse. It's hard to read this book without recognizing that new ideas have taken root in many universities, classrooms, and workplaces. The shape this will take is still unsettled, but conversations about pedagogy will go a long way towards establishing the relevance of public heritage studies in the twenty-first century.

Williams operated a slave pen in Washington, DC, known as the Yellow House, and actively trafficked in enslaved men, women, and children for more than twenty years. His slave trading activities took an extraordinary turn in 1840 when he purchased twenty-seven enslaved convicts from the Virginia State Penitentiary in Richmond with the understanding that he could carry them outside of the United States for sale. When Williams conveyed his captives illegally into New Orleans, allegedly while en route to the foreign country of Texas, he prompted a series of courtroom dramas that would last for almost three decades. Based on court records, newspapers, governors' files, slave manifests, slave narratives, travelers' accounts, and penitentiary data, Williams' Gang examines slave criminality, the coastwise domestic slave trade, and southern jurisprudence as it supplies a compelling portrait of the economy, society, and politics of the Old South.

This article employs the lens of Afrofuturism to address the Underground Railroad, detailing what... more This article employs the lens of Afrofuturism to address the Underground Railroad, detailing what imagination, tact, and technology, it took for fugitive Blacks to flee to the "outer spaces of slavery." Black enslavement was as terrifying as any exotic fictional tale, but it happened to real humans alienated in the "peculiar institution." Escaping slavery brought dreams to life, and at times must have felt like "magical realism," or an out-of-body experience, and the American North, Canada, Mexico, Africa, Europe, and free Caribbean islands were otherworldly and science fiction-like, in contrast to where Black fugitives ascended. This article will address the intersections of race, technology, and liberation, by retroactively applying a modern concept to historical moments.

Art of the Amistad does not retell the story of the famous rebellion, nor is it a biography of Ci... more Art of the Amistad does not retell the story of the famous rebellion, nor is it a biography of Cinque. A number of historical treatments, most noted is Marcus Rediker's The Amistad Rebellion: An Atlantic Odyssey of Slavery and Freedom (2012), have added new insight and nuance to the narrative of the revolt. Thereby, this book focuses on the art of Amistad, particularly the Portrait of Cinque by New Haven, Connecticut, artist Nathaniel Jocelyn, and the impact an array of works from printings, murals, sculptures, artifacts, and theater performances have had on the memory of the insurrection. In aggregate, these artistic expressions have kept the past rebellion, the court case, and the return of the Amistad Africans to their native land present.
