Despite the negligence of the multimillion-dollar drug industry, people entirely rely on medicinal plants in some part of the world. In this study, we have emphasized on going back to those traditional medicinal practices to figure out their underlying mechanism to move forward on phytochemical based drug development. We screened Medicinal Plant Database Bangladesh 1.0 (MPDB1.0) and on-going extension, MPDB2.0, of that database to find traditionally used medicinal plants and their active compounds. Genetic Diversity in Three Forms of Anabas testudineus Bloch

Karyotype and RAPD analysis were studied in 3 forms of climbing perch, Anabas testudineus viz. wi... more Karyotype and RAPD analysis were studied in 3 forms of climbing perch, Anabas testudineus viz. wild (native, non-spotted), Thai (introduced from Thailand, spotted) and Thai (a spotted-released form from local hatcheries). 2n=46 chromosomes were found in the spotted-released form. The total length of 2n chromosome complement was 89.96 μm with a chromosomal length ranging from 0.92 and 2.96 μm. The centromeric formula of this spotted-released form was 15m+9sm+22t. This form did not show any CMA-bands. The karyotypic features of this spotted-released form were totally different from those given by previous reports on spotted forms. Four primers, namely OPA-2, OPA-4, OPA-7 and OPA-8, were tested on these 3 forms. The wild form showed unique bands in the OPA-2 (1300, 550, 350 bp) and OPA-7 (280 bp) primers. The spotted and spotted-released form showed different RAPD banding patterns in primers OPA-4, OPA-7 and OPA-8. The wild form was found to be separate from the other 2 forms at 13.5 linkage distance. The 2 Thai forms have 11.0 linkage distances indicating that these 2 forms are not genetically very close. The karyotype and RAPD results indicate that either the Thai spotted-released form is not developed exactly from the same stock as the Thai spotted form or that due to the application of physical stress or chemical treatment this spotted-released form has been modified.

Translation and Validation of Enhanced Asian Rome III Questionnaires in Bengali Language for Diagnosis of Functional Gastrointestinal Disorders

Background/Aims Functional gastrointestinal disorders (FGIDs), diagnosed by symptom-based criteri... more Background/Aims Functional gastrointestinal disorders (FGIDs), diagnosed by symptom-based criteria due to lack of biomarkers, need translatedvalidated questionnaires in different languages. As Bengali, the mother tongue of Bangladesh and eastern India, is the seventh most spoken language in the world, we translated and validated the Enhanced Asian Rome III questionnaire (EAR3Q) in this language. Methods The EAR3Q was translated in Bengali as per guideline from the Rome Foundation. The translated questionnaire was validated prospectively on Bengali-speaking healthy subjects (HS, n = 30), and patients with functional dyspepsia (FD, n = 35), irritable bowel syndrome (IBS, n = 40) and functional constipation (FC, n = 12) diagnosed by clinicians using the Rome III criteria. The subjects were asked to fill-in the questionnaire again after 2 weeks, to check for its reproducibility. Results During translation, the original and the backward translated English versions of the questionnaire demonstrated high concordance. Sensitivity of the Bengali questionnaire to diagnose patients with FD, IBS, FC, and HS was 100%, 100%, 75%, and 100%, respectively, considering diagnosis by the clinicians as the gold standard. On test-retest reliability analysis, Kappa values for FD, IBS, FC, and HS were 1.0, 1.0, 0.83, and 1.0, respectively. The Bengali questionnaire detected considerable overlap of FD symptoms among patients with IBS, IBS among patients with FD, and FD among patients with FC, which were not detected by the clinicians. Conclusions We successfully translated and validated the EAR3Q in Bengali. We believe that this translated questionnaire will be useful for clinical evaluation and research on FGIDs in the Bengali-speaking population.

Therefore, this study focused on the molecular characterization and phylogeny analysis at lineages level by sequencing the fragment of 16S rRNA and cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) genes through standard cloning and sequencing techniques followed by phylogenetic characterization. All six isolates, belong to the genus Limnodrilus that is confirmed into two different species (L. hoffmeisteri and L. claparedianus-cervix) of the tubifex. The phylogenetic analysis estimated that the resident worms are under the same clade although transmissions from other countries might likely occur through different aquatic routes and birds. The drawbacks were the use of a complex colony rather than a single worm and taking representative isolates instead of all the positive amplicons for sequencing. However, this study is the first report of genetical confirmation of the genus Limnodrilus at lineage level from Bangladesh.

The effectiveness of 2 phenoxyethanol (2 PE), quinaldine (2-methyl quinoline), benzocaine (ethyl ... more The effectiveness of 2 phenoxyethanol (2 PE), quinaldine (2-methyl quinoline), benzocaine (ethyl 4 aminobenzoate) and tertiary amyl alcohol (TAA) was tested to determine their optimal dosages for rapid induction and recovery in the first experiment, while the second experiment evaluated the effects of low dose quinaldine (175 ?l/L) and 2 PE (250 ?l/L) with oxygen for 1, 3, 6 and 9 h on the mortality and water qualities at 400 g/L rohu Labeo rohita fingerlings in a truck transport simulation. Optimum dosages of 2 PE (250 ?l/L), quinaldine (175 ?l/L), benzocaine (40 mg/L) and TAA (1.5 ml/L) were found to have rapid (within 6 min) immobilization and recovery. Very low level of immediate and delayed mortality (<1%) was found across all three transport methods. While 2 PE had dissolved oxygen (DO) concentration above 13 mg/L, quinaldine had lower level. Although the steganographic approach can be carried out in either image, audio or video signals, due to the availability of higher degree of redundant data and easy accessibility in transmission mediums, digital images are the prevalent practice of steganography. Generally, information hiding inside a digital image results in deprivation of some visual quality of the image. However, recent advancement in steganographic schemes has been able to develop techniques that can disguise an information within a digital image in such a way that the cover image can be taken to its original state after extracting the hidden information. These techniques are commo nly referred to as Lossless Steganography or Reversible Steganography. Although late researches in steganography have been able to successfully conduct reversible steganography in spatial domain, reliable and robust lossless steganographic technique in compressed domain is yet a challenge. In this paper, we propose a novel reversible steganographic approach that can hide high capacity secret information in location based compressed domain. The proposed method can completely reconstruct the cover image or host image and provide the best possible perceptual quality. The proposed method can also provide its users with a key for hiding and extracting information so that the robustness is achieved in a great extent.

People all over the world are sharing, transmitting and storing millions of images every moment. Although, there have been significant development in storage device capacity enhancement sector, production of digital images is being increased too in that proportion. Consequently, the demand of handsome image compression algorithms is yet very high. Easy and less-time-consuming transmission of high quality digital images requires the compression-decompression (CODEC) technique to be as simple as possible and to be completely lossless. Keeping this demand into mind, researchers around the world are trying to innovate such a compression mechanism that can easily reach the goal specified. After a careful exploration of the existing lossless image compression methods, we present a computationally simple lossless image compression algorithm where the problem is viewed from a different angle-as the frequency distribution of a specific gray level over a predefined image block is locatable, omission of the most frequent pixel from the block helps achieve better compression in most of the cases. Introducing the proposed algorithm step by step, a detailed worked out example is illustrated. The performance of the proposed algorithm is then measured against some standard image compression parameters and comparative performances have been considered thereafter. It has been shown that our approach can achieve about 4.87% better compression ratio as compared to the existing lossless image compression schemes.

While the total mortality was lower than 9% until 6 hrs of transport, it was very high (49 - 60%) at 9 hrs across all three treatment media. The highest level of cortisol was measured in the fingerlings simulated using WPW while the lowest level was detected in the fingerlings sampled form WW. The level of cortisol observed in the fingerlings simulated using PW was not different from other two media. Between durations, the levels of cortisol observed were significantly different. This study evaluated the growth performances and nutrient compositions of pabda Ompok bimaculatus... more This study evaluated the growth performances and nutrient compositions of pabda Ompok bimaculatus (Bloch, 1797) in a recirculating aquaculture system (RAS) and a closed aquaculture system (CAS). The average daily weight gain (ADG) and specific growth rate (SGR) of pabda in RAS (ADG: 0.18 g/d; SGR: 3.40 %/d) was 3.61and 1.41-folds higher than that of the CAS (ADG: 0.05 g/d; SGR: 2.40 %/d). Fish had significantly higher level of PUFA (Poly-unsaturated fatty acid) in CAS (41%) than in RAS (33%). The ratio between omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids in RAS and CAS were 0.73 and 0.69, respectively. This study’s results have demonstrated that the culture of pabda in RAS is more suitable than CAS in terms of growth.

In recent years, substantial research efforts have gone into investigating different approaches t... more In recent years, substantial research efforts have gone into investigating different approaches to the detection of events in real time from the Twitter data stream. Most of these approaches, however, suffer from a high computational cost and are not evaluated using a publicly available corpus, thus making it difficult to properly compare them. In this paper, we propose a scalable event detection system, TwitterNews+, to detect and track newsworthy events in real time. TwitterNews+ uses a novel approach to cluster event related tweets from Twitter with a significantly lower computational cost compared to the existing state-of-the-art approaches. Finally, we evaluate the effectiveness of TwitterNews+ using a publicly available corpus and its associated ground truth data set of newsworthy events. The result of the evaluation shows a significant improvement, in terms of recall and precision, over the baselines we have used.

The effects of five levels of aflatoxin B1 (0, 25, 50, 100 and 200 ppb) and three (15, 30 and 45 ... more The effects of five levels of aflatoxin B1 (0, 25, 50, 100 and 200 ppb) and three (15, 30 and 45 days) culture durations on the growth performances and residue concentration in Thai koi, Anabas testudineus was investigated in indoor plastic tanks. Significant differences were found in 100 and 200 ppb treatment groups in average daily weight gain (ADG, g/d) and specific growth rate (SGR, %/d) compared to those of control, 25 and 50 ppb treatments group. Body muscle in 200 ppb treatment group had significantly higher concentration of aflatoxin B1 (AFB) residue than in the 100 and 50 ppb treatments. Control and 25 ppb treatments group did not have any residue. Total protein and fat contents decreased compared to control, 25 and 50 ppb treatments group. The results suggested that the level of contamination by 50, 100 and 200 ppb aflatoxin B1 in the feed of Thai koi fingerlings may concentrate in the body muscle at a level of above human health hazards. Any feeds with even 50 ppb AFB1 should not be used as feed for raising food fishes.

The effects of density (50, 55 and 60 kg fingerlings/drum of 200 litre) on the mortality and esse... more The effects of density (50, 55 and 60 kg fingerlings/drum of 200 litre) on the mortality and essential water quality variables were assessed for silver carp Hypophthalmichthys molitrix fingerlings in a simulated transport experiment. The second experiment involved the determination of the effects of knowing the optimum loading density 50 kg/drum fingerlings on the mortality and water quality in silver carp advanced fingerlings for standard 8 hours transport simulation. Six hours of simulation duration resulted in less than 1% mortality and 8 hours caused about 6%. Third experiment with highest density 60 kg/drum fingerlings at 500 g/l of advanced rui (Labeo rohita) fingerlings was used for a period of 6 hours since the quality of the transport medium was deteriorated due to regurgitated stomach contents. The fingerlings were unconditioned and fed. Level of immediate mortality was only nearly 3% at 6 hours of simulation duration. This study has clearly demonstrated that the optimum loading of silver carp fingerlings per drum is 50 kg. The minimum concentration of dissolved oxygen (DO) concentration for maximum survival is 2 mg/l for silver carp fingerlings. Silver carp advanced fingerlings can be transported for 8 hours duration by using 2 phenoxyethanol at the concentration of 115 µl/l with oxygen injection. Rui advanced fingerlings can be transported at 60 kg/drum (500 g/l) for 6 hrs duration even if the fingerlings are unconditioned.

No mortality was observed in any of the treatments. Significant differences were found in 100 ppb treatment group in all three growth parameters, i.e., total weight gain (WG, g), average daily weight gain (ADG, g d-1) and specific growth rate (SGR, % d-1) compared to those of control and 50 ppb treatment groups. The 100 ppb treatment group had, respectively, 2.25-, and 2.23-folds higher FCR (%) than did the control and 50 ppb treatment groups. Both body muscle and liver in 100 ppb treatment group had significantly higher concentration of aflatoxin B 1 (AFB) residues of than in the 50 ppb treatment. Control did not have any residue. However, in both sampling durations, residue in the body muscle and liver had declining trends. The results of this study suggest that the level of contamination by 50 & 100 ppb aflatoxin B 1 in the feed of advanced common carp fingerlings may affect growth and concentrates in the body muscle and liver at a level of above human health hazards. Any feeds with even 50 ppb AFB should not be used as feed for raising food fishes.
