Working in a team teaches you how to live together. Mario Veluti, who has been with SICIM for twenty-five years, reminds us of this. Over the course of his career, Mario has held various roles: Project Manager, Construction Manager, Mechanical Superintendent, and Construction Superintendent working on projects in different parts of the world, from Italy to Congo, from Cameroon to Türkiye, from Iraq to Canada. And he can say it with confidence: "on these job sites, a very large number of people work together [...] so you learn how to live and work together", an attitude that should "be developed for normal life, everyday life too." We met him on the Sestino–Minerbio Pipeline Replacement Project, Lot 3 Saraceno–Cesena, carried out on behalf of SNAM, where Mario works as Drilling Superintendent. He coordinates two crews involved in HDD (Horizontal Directional Drilling) activities, a trenchless technology that, by taking advantage of the pipe’s flexibility, enables the installation of pipelines over long distances. In this interview, Mario explains what makes him feel fulfilled in his role, giving us a glimpse of both the opportunities and the challenges that come with this job. Above all, he reminds us of an important truth: a construction site is not only a place where infrastructure is built, but also a place where people grow. Silvia Migliorati, Environmental & Sustainability Manager at SICIM, has won the 2026 WIP Award in the Industry Ambassador category. The Women in Pipe (WIP) Awards recognize professionals and organizations that are helping advance inclusion in the pipeline and piping industry. In a traditionally male-dominated field, this award — and Silvia's words — highlight why inclusion matters and how we can all play a role in driving change: “I believe that increasing visibility, creating tangible role models, and supporting female talent are more important than ever. From an early age, stereotypes and often invisible biases shape what girls perceive as possible for themselves. Representation matters because if you can see it, you can believe it. That is why I decided to apply as an Industry Ambassador: to help redefine how our industry is perceived, especially by younger generations. I would like to be the female presence in the meeting room that I myself needed years ago. So that a young woman does not feel like an exception, but simply part of the norm — not simply present, but truly valued. We need to create opportunities for talent regardless of gender. SICIM Awarded a Landmark Gas Project in Kazakhstan We have been present in Kazakhstan since 1998 and, today, SICIM is the largest EPC contractor in the country and the only one currently operating across all three major fields: Karachaganak, Kashagan, and Tengiz. Together with Hyundai Engineering Co. Ltd., we have been awarded a Letter of Award (LOA) by QazaqGaz for the construction of a large-scale gas processing facility and related infrastructure capable of processing up to 5 billion cubic meters (BCMA) of raw gas per year in northwestern Kazakhstan. The award is the result of more than three years of dedicated effort and close collaboration with all stakeholders. Scheduled for completion by 2030, the project will strengthen energy security and maximize the value of the country's natural resources while generating long-term benefits through local employment, skills development, and knowledge transfer, including in the environmental field. The project will be executed in accordance with the highest environmental, safety, and operational standards, building on SICIM's extensive international experience. SICIM took part in “Talenti senza confini – Le nuove rotte del lavoro internazionale”, an event organized by Orienta Agenzia per il Lavoro and ADVANT Nctm focusing on the challenges of today’s labor market and the opportunities created by the international mobility of skills and talent. During the panel dedicated to corporate experiences, Filippo Levati, Head of QHSE & Sustainability, shared SICIM’s approach to integrating international workers, highlighting the central role of training, health, and safety in supporting the sustainable growth of the construction and infrastructure sectors. Stepping away from the desk and onto the construction site… This is the spirit behind our “Inside the site” program, develop to foster collaboration across roles and departments, building stronger connections and a shared vision. Because it is only by putting ourselves in others’ shoes that we can truly understand certain dynamics. This is exactly what happened in Cesena, at the 3rd Lot of the Sestino–Minerbio Gas Pipeline, where a group of colleagues from headquarters put on their PPE and spent a day on site. From the visit to the Elisa Tunnel —where pipe installation was underway— to the microtunneling area, where preparatory activities for the next installation phase and the specific features of operations carried out at a depth of 15 meters were illustrated. The visit also provided an overview of crossings executed DN 1400 (56") pipe jacking drilling, pipeline laying activities, and welding operations carried out in excavation.
