Factors conditioning the content of chemical elements in soil and mosses in Armenia
Journal of Trace Elements and Minerals

The research team combined compositional data analysis and geospatial mapping to reveal key factors conditioning moss and soil chemical composition. The results showed that significant correlation was detected between Cr, Sr, Rb, As, and Pb for Syntrichia ruralis moss and soil contents suggesting their origin stemming from soil resuspension. Meanwhile, in the case of pleurocarpus (Homalothecium philippeanum) moss species, the mechanisms conditioning the transfer of elements to mosses from dead or living plant materials were found to be responsible for mosses Zn, Sr, Mn, Rb, As, Ba, Cu contents. Both media were identified to display multivariate outliers in the same sampling sites which were characterized by the presence of natural mineralization and mining and smelting activities. The compositional PCA and k-means clustering show that the soil element content groupings are in line with the geological base, whereas in the case of mosses, the rural and urban gradient plays a pivotal role in the spatial separation of the identified clusters. In addition, moss samples included in a cluster representing the urban areas of the country have included typical anthropogenic elements (Pb, Cu, Zn etc.) confirming the applicability of the studied mosses in pollution source identification.

Atmospheric deposition of trace elements in Greece using moss Hypnum cupressiforme Hedw. as biomonitors

During the 2015/2016 European moss survey, ninety-five samples of Hypnum cupressiforme Hedw. were collected in Northern Greece. Mosses were analyzed to the content of Neutron Activation Analysis and the concentrations of thirty-three elements were determined. The contamination factors for the following elements Al, As, V, Ni, Fe, Cr, Zn were calculated. Information about air quality was provided through the study of atmospheric deposition of trace elements in mosses in the vicinity of Northern Greece.

INAA at the IBR-2 reactor has made it possible to determine the content of 35 elements in moss and lichen biomonitors. Samples collected at sites located 10Ä15 km from the center of Ulan-Bator were analyzed by Instrumental Neutron Activation Analysis (INAA) using epithermal neutrons. The mosses (Rhytidium rugosum, Thuidium abietinum, Entodon concinnus) and lichens (Cladonia stellaris, Parmelia separata) were used to study the atmospheric deposition of trace elements. It was shown that the suggested types of mosses could be used as suitable biomonitors to estimate the concentration levels of heavy metals and trace elements in Ulan-Bator atmospheric deposition. The results are compared to the data of atmospheric deposition of some European countries.

M... more The paper analyzes ecological and geochemical features of the moss Pleurozium schreberi (Brid.) Mitt., growing in artificial pine plantings of the National Park Buzuluksky Bor (Orenburg Region) and the Krasnosamarsky Forest (Samara Region). The research has been carried out within the framework of the International Program ICP Vegetation (https://icpvegetation.ceh.ac.uk), on the practical use of some bryophyte species in the environmental monitoring of multi-element air pollution in the countries of Western and Eastern Europe and a number of other countries. In the National Park Buzuluksky Bor and the Krasnosamarsky Forest, where species diversity and ecological characteristics of bryophytes have been studied for several years, the phytomass of the moss Pleurozium schreberi has been selected. This species is included in the species list proposed by the organizers of the research work under the UNECE ICP Vegetation Program. A multi-element analysis of Pleurozium schreberi phytomass h...

Moss biomonitoring and air pollution modelling on a regional scale: delayed reflection of industrial pollution in moss in a heavily polluted region?
Environmental Science and Pollution Research, 2020
A passive biomonitoring survey using terrestrial mosses was performed in a heavily polluted indus... more A passive biomonitoring survey using terrestrial mosses was performed in a heavily polluted industrial region on the border between Czechia and Poland in a regular grid of 41 sampling points. The concentrations of 38 elements were determined in the moss samples, using Neutron Activation Analysis (NAA). Simultaneously, air pollution modelling was performed using the Czech reference methodology Symos’97 for the year of the sampling (2015) and 3 years prior (2012) in order to compare the results of both the approaches and evaluate the credibility of the moss biomonitoring method. The NAA results were transformed according to the principles of compositional data analysis and assessed using hierarchical clustering on principal components. The resulting clusters were compared with the results of air pollution modelling using one-way analysis of variance. The association of determined clusters with the pollution from industrial sources was confirmed only for the results of the 2012 modelling. This validates the complementarity of the air pollution modelling and the moss biomonitoring, ascertains the moss biomonitoring as a valid method for long-term pollution assessment and confirms one of the fundamentals of moss biomonitoring, the reflection of the atmospheric conditions prevailing in the period before the sampling.

Mitt. were used to indicate the relative levels of air pollution by trace elements in Polish national parks.Pleurozium schreberiwas collected from nine national parks. The highest concentrations were recorded in the moss samples from the southern and most industrialised part of the country; the lowest from northern and north-eastern Poland. A comparison of data obtained from Polish national parks in the 1970s and 1990s showed a significant decrease in the concentrations of heavy metals. In the linear covariability estimation, thetquantile approach was used for multi-element comparison. A number of positive covariabilities were observed. This is a result of anthropogenic activity and the geochemical characteristics of the local environment, including crust composition to which soil composition is related. The statistical approach oftquantile to study common relationships between element concentrations can...

Biomonitoring of elemental atmospheric deposition: spatial distributions in the 2015/2016 moss survey in Bulgaria

To investigate elemental atmospheric deposition patterns, 115 samples of moss biomonitors were collected. Instrumental neutron activation analysis was used to maximize the number of elements determined, including trace elements. The content of 34 elements was measured. Spatial and temporal variability trends and multivariate analysis indicated that coal mining and coal combustion for electricity production and domestic heating are major anthropogenic factors affecting the ecological situation in the country, followed by effects related to the construction of roads and related traffic pollution.

Over the years, the areas studied included several 'environmental hotspots', one of which was a hazardous industrial enterprise -the Kardzhali lead-zinc smelter. It was known to be the main source of lead, cadmium, zinc, and sulfur oxide contamination in the country. An overview of the available data from all moss surveys was made to reveal temporal and spatial deposition trends for the investigated metals and metalloids during the 20-year period of participation. Throughout the surveys, three analytical techniques were used: neutron activation analysis, atomic absorption spectrometry, and atomic emission spectrometry with inductively coupled plasma. Up to 47 elements were determined in 2005/6, 2010/11 and in 2015/16 (Ag,
