Today, we celebrate our cross-border investigation, "The Kalamata Trap: Hundreds of Migrants Drown on Their Way to Europe" by journalist Sameh Ellaboody, winning the global True Story Award in the "Impact" category. Its findings directly contributed to bringing those responsible for the loss of lives to trial. This recognition goes beyond mere publication; in this specific category, the award seeks stories that shape a new reality. In the world of investigative journalism, research means diving into mountains of data, tracing hidden threads, and taking immense risks in conflict zones to uncover facts that are meant to be buried. The True Story Award for the Research category recognizes the high quality of journalistic research. The following factors are considered in the evaluation: scope of the research, time spent, data analysis, difficulty of obtaining information, and any risks taken. 🤖 في إطار جهودها لدعم المؤسسات الإعلامية الصغيرة والمتوسطة في العالم العربي في دمج تقنيات الذكاء الاصطناعي في العمل الصحفي، نظّمت أريج يوم الثلاثاء 2 حزيران/يونيو مائدة مستديرة إقليمية جمعت ممثلين/ات عن 20 مؤسسة إعلامية من تسع دول عربية، لمناقشة أبرز التحديات المرتبطة باستخدام هذه التقنيات، بما في ذلك قضايا الكتابة، والتحيز، وانتشار المعلومات الخاطئة. 💬 شهدت الجلسة نقاشاً ثرياً عكس تنوع الرؤى حول الذكاء الاصطناعي؛ بين من حذّر من مخاطره المحتملة مثل تراجع الدور البشري ونمطية المحتوى، ومن رأى فيه فرصة لتطوير العمل الصحفي وتعزيز كفاءته. 📜 كما استعرض المشاركون/ات تجارب عملية ناجحة ركزت على تنمية الثقافة الرقمية المتعلقة بالذكاء الاصطناعي، ووضع ضوابط تحريرية وأخلاقية واضحة، والاستفادة من هذه الأدوات في أتمتة المهام المتكررة، بما يتيح للصحفيين/ات التفرغ للأعمال الإبداعية دون المساس بجوهر المهنة. 📌 وانطلاقاً من مخرجات اللقاء، ستعمل أريج على إعداد مجموعة من التوصيات العملية لتوظيفها في المبادرات والخطط المستقبلية، بهدف تعزيز جاهزية المؤسسات الإعلامية العربية لمواكبة التحولات التكنولوجية المتسارعة، ودعم استجابة الصحفيين/ات المهنية والأخلاقية لمتطلبات العصر. 🤖 As part of ARIJ’s efforts to support small and medium-sized media organizations across the Arab world in integrating AI into journalism, ARIJ hosted a regional roundtable on Tuesday, June 2, bringing together representatives from 20 media organizations across 9 Arab countries to discuss key challenges associated with AI adoption, including writing, bias, and the spread of misinformation. 💬 The session featured a rich exchange of perspectives on AI. While some participants highlighted potential risks, such as the diminishing human role in journalism and the homogenization of content, others emphasized the opportunities AI offers to enhance journalistic work and improve efficiency. 📜 Participants also shared successful practical experiences that focused on strengthening AI literacy, establishing clear editorial and ethical guidelines, and leveraging AI tools to automate repetitive, enabling journalists to dedicate more time to creative and investigative work without compromising the core values of the profession. 📌 Building on the outcomes of the discussion, ARIJ will develop a set of practical recommendations to inform future initiatives and programs aimed at strengthening the readiness of Arab media organizations to navigate rapid technological change, while supporting journalists in responding to these developments in a professional and ethical manner.
