More than 80% of world trade travels by sea, making shipbuilding a strategic sector that underpins global trade, energy supply chains, and national security. Yet turning a design into a finished vessel depends on skills developed over years of hands-on experience. That expertise is under pressure as experienced workers retire and the industry faces challenges in building its next-generation workforce. To preserve the knowledge and skill sets needed for the future, shipbuilders are turning to smart yards, where AI, robotics, and digital production management capture veteran know-how and apply it across operations. At its Geoje shipyard, Hanwha Ocean is recording the techniques of skilled welders as data and training AI systems to work alongside them, with AI now assisting in 67% of indoor welding operations. We look at how this technology is supporting workers on site and advancing shipyards today.
