Insurance has a significant opportunity to better serve women, and the business case is becoming harder to ignore. At the Microinsurance Network’s Gender & Inclusive Insurance Best Practice Group meeting in May, chaired by Angela M Wambugu of Women's World Banking, Gender BPG member Deepak Barsay, Co-founder and CEO of TruNord Technologies Ltd., presented on the theme: “Gender-Sensitive Inclusive Insurance: The Role of Digital Innovations.” His presentation explored on why women's protection gap remains one of insurance's biggest growth opportunities and how digital innovation is making it easier to close. The discussion highlighted four barriers that continue to limit women's access to insurance: 🔹 Access: Many women are excluded from products that rely on formal IDs, smartphones, bank accounts, or extensive digital records. 🔹 Affordability: Traditional premium structures often do not fit the realities of women working in informal or irregular employment, where incomes fluctuate from month to month. 🔹 Awareness and trust: Women are more likely to engage through community networks, trusted intermediaries, and people who understand their needs than through conventional distribution channels alone. 🔹 Agency: In many households, financial decisions are shared or influenced by others, making it essential to design products that reflect how decisions are actually made. Technology is helping insurers respond in practical ways through embedded insurance, mobile-first distribution, alternative data for underwriting, AI-enabled claims processing, and digital health tools. But these solutions work best when they are built around a real customer need and delivered through trusted relationships.
