In Kalaw township, fields once destroyed by a typhoon now sustain three harvests a year. That recovery didn't happen through relief alone. In a new op-ed, UNDP Myanmar Resident Representative Norimasa Shimamura makes the case for bridging humanitarian action and development. Why is this bridge necessary? Because Myanmar's crises, conflict, economic uncertainty, and climate shocks don't occur in isolation. They reinforce each other. 🤝 Recovery is built person by person, community by community.   In March 2025, a 7.7 magnitude earthquake in Myanmar devastated communities across Mandalay and Sagaing regions, leaving families without homes, safe infrastructure, or livelihoods. More than a year on, recovery remains an urgent priority.   Recently, the Chargé d'Affaires of the Embassy of Japan visited active project sites in Mandalay, engaging directly with earthquake-affected communities and observing ongoing recovery activities supported by the Government of Japan.   Through the Japan-funded project implemented by UNDP, efforts on the ground include:   🧱 Emergency debris clearance and safe removal of hazardous materials from affected neighbourhoods  🏗️ Demolition of structurally unsafe buildings posing ongoing risks to residents  ♻️ Community awareness and capacity building on waste segregation, recycling, and sustainable debris management  🏘️ Rapid repair and reconstruction of community-prioritized infrastructure   Through this Japan-funded partnership, UNDP is working to reach 972,000 people across earthquake-affected areas of Myanmar, delivering debris clearance, infrastructure repair, and community recovery support where it is needed most.   The visit reaffirms Japan's sustained commitment to the people of Myanmar at a critical moment in their recovery.   🇯🇵➡️🇲🇲 From the people of Japan to the people of Myanmar. ---- Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan UNDP in Asia and the Pacific UNDP Tokyo / UNDP駐日代表事務所

"From day one, we were thinking about the future." In the aftermath of Myanmar's devastating 7.7-magnitude earthquake in March 2025, UNDP teams mobilized rapidly to support affected communities. What started as a response to an emergency has evolved into a long-term recovery initiative aimed at restoring livelihoods and hope. In this video, our Resident Representative, Norimasa Shimomura, shares why this work stands out as one of the results he's most proud of during his leadership at UNDP Myanmar.

Young innovators are helping to shape #Myanmar's future. Through the UNDP-supported Frontier Tech Leaders Programme, young people are gaining advanced AI and digital skills. And they are applying them to real-world challenges. At a recent Climate Resilience Agri-Tech Hackathon, participants developed solutions designed to support farmers with real-time insights, from weather and climate data to market information and crop guidance. This is more than a training initiative. A year after the earthquake, the road to recovery in #Myanmar is being paved by the very people it serves. This is a story of resilience led by local heroes like Mon Mon Oo, who supervises construction in her village, and Daw Khin San Lwin, whose shop is finally "alive again" now that customers can reach her door. This recovery is a collective effort driven by the community and supported by the UN in Myanmar and its partners. While UNDP works alongside thousands of community members to lead housing repairs and local planning, UNHCR is brightening these newly restored roads with solar-powered streetlights to ensure safety after dark. At the same time, the ILO is partnering with young workers to build professional construction skills, turning the act of rebuilding a village into a career for the future.
