The National AI Office (#NAIO), under the Ministry of Digital, represented Malaysia as an invited speaker at the 16th Cyber Secretariat Workshop of the Forum for East Asia–Latin America Cooperation (FEALAC), held in Seoul, Republic of Korea, on 9 July 2026. Bringing together policymakers, national AI agencies, academia and industry representatives from across East Asia and Latin America, the workshop served as a platform to exchange perspectives on AI policy, innovation and regional cooperation. During the workshop, Alhafidz Yahya, Director of AI Innovation at the National AI Office, delivered the presentation “Malaysia Towards an AI Nation” as part of the session on AI Innovation Cases and Cooperation Strategies in FEALAC. The presentation shared Malaysia’s AI Nation 2030 agenda, outlining the country’s approach to coordinated AI implementation, responsible governance and cross-sector AI adoption. It also reflected on key lessons from Malaysia’s AI journey, highlighting the importance of institutional coordination, outcome-driven implementation and trusted governance in accelerating AI adoption. Building on these experiences, Malaysia also shared practical proposals to strengthen AI cooperation between East Asia and Latin America. These included a policy exchange platform, public sector AI capacity building, cross-border pilot projects, and collaboration on multilingual and sovereign AI, reflecting a shared commitment to advancing trusted and inclusive AI through international cooperation. Strengthening Malaysia’s AI ecosystem requires continuous learning, international knowledge exchange and collaboration to better understand global developments in AI and emerging digital technologies. In line with this commitment, Alhafidz Yahya, Director of AI Innovation Exchange at the National AI Office (#NAIO), joined fellow participants in the Digital Leadership Excellence (DLE) Cohort 4 programme, organised by Huawei and MCMC Academy in Shenzhen, China, from 21–26 June 2026. The programme provided participants with practical insights into the implementation of emerging digital technologies through technical sessions, knowledge-sharing and engagements with technology companies and innovation ecosystems. Discussions covered developments in artificial intelligence (AI), cloud technologies, digital infrastructure, healthcare innovation and autonomous mobility, with a focus on how these technologies are deployed, governed and integrated across different sectors. Beyond technological advancements, the programme strengthened participants’ understanding of the governance, policy and ecosystem considerations that are essential for responsible AI adoption. The exchanges also highlighted the importance of digital readiness, trusted governance and cross-sector collaboration in enabling AI to deliver meaningful impact. The knowledge and perspectives gained through the programme will support NAIO’s ongoing efforts to strengthen Malaysia’s AI ecosystem by advancing responsible AI development, adoption and governance, while contributing to the country’s broader digital transformation agenda.

The National AI Office (#NAIO) hosted the Public Sector Stakeholder Consultation Workshop on 2 July 2026, bringing together representatives from ministries and government agencies to discuss the proposed AI Governance Bill and gather feedback on Malaysia’s AI governance framework. The workshop was officiated by Mr. Ma. Sivanesan, Deputy Secretary-General (Digital Development), Ministry of Digital, who highlighted the importance of developing an AI governance framework that supports innovation while ensuring AI is developed and used responsibly, safely, and in a manner that builds public trust. He also emphasised the role of collaboration across the public sector in developing a practical and effective framework for Malaysia. Participants discussed key elements of the proposed Bill, including AI governance, guiding principles, AI risk management, incident reporting, and AI sandbox initiatives. The discussions provided valuable feedback that will help inform the continued development of the proposed legislation. Building on the earlier industry consultation, this public sector engagement reflects NAIO’s commitment to ensuring the proposed AI Governance Bill is shaped through broad and meaningful stakeholder participation. The insights gathered will support the development of a governance framework that is practical, trusted, and aligned with Malaysia’s aspirations for responsible AI adoption.

The Public Sector AI Nexus Challenge (PSAINC) 2026 officially kicked off today, bringing together government leaders, strategic partners and participants to accelerate practical AI adoption across Malaysia's public sector. Organised by the National AI Office (#NAIO) and Jabatan Digital Negara (JDN) in collaboration with PETRONAS Leadership Centre (PLC), the programme provides a platform to develop AI use cases that address real operational challenges across government. The event commenced with opening remarks by Tuan Mohammed Syarin Mohammed Yussof, General Manager, Learning & Campus Experience, PETRONAS Leadership Centre, followed by welcoming remarks from YBrs. Ts. Nik Zalbiha Nik Mat, Director General of Jabatan Digital Negara. The programme was officially launched by YBrs. Tuan Ma. Sivanesan, Deputy Secretary-General (Digital Development), Ministry of Digital. In his address, he emphasised that AI is about solving real challenges, improving government services and ensuring its adoption is responsible, ethical and secure in support of Malaysia's AI Nation 2030 aspirations. The event also featured an industry sharing session, "AI Adoption in PETRONAS", by Tuan Shaharuddin Hamid Mustapha, CEO of PETRONAS Digital Sdn. Bhd., who shared insights into PETRONAS' AI adoption journey. PSAINC 2026 brings together 120 participants from 40 teams representing federal, state and local government agencies. Participants include representatives from Majlis Daerah Tanah Merah, Majlis Daerah Kota Tinggi, Majlis Daerah Rembau, Pejabat Daerah dan Tanah Kerian, Jabatan Kemajuan Orang Asli (JAKOA) and the Institut Teknikal Jepun Malaysia (JTM), among many others, showcasing collaboration across diverse public sector organisations in advancing practical AI adoption. Over the coming months, participants will work with industry mentors to develop practical AI solutions that support better public service delivery.

Shaping Malaysia's AI Governance Framework Together The National AI Office (#NAIO) convened an Industry Stakeholder Consultation Workshop on 1 July 2026 bringing together more than 70 participants representing industry members, associations, academics, civil societies and ecosystem partners from a variety of sectors to contribute to the development of Malaysia's AI Governance Bill. The workshop began with opening remarks by Alhafidz Yahya, Director of AI Innovation at NAIO, before Darmain Segaran, Policy Manager at NAIO, provided an overview of the key focus areas of the proposed AI Governance Bill, framing the discussions that followed. Participants engaged in focused breakout discussions on key aspects of the proposed AI Governance Bill, covering its governance principles, proportionate approach to AI risk, and measures to support responsible innovation. The discussions generated valuable insights to support the continued refinement of the Bill. The workshop concluded with each group presenting its findings and recommendations to NAIO leadership and key government stakeholders, including YBhg. Datuk Thiyagu Ganesan, Deputy Director-General (Law Reform), Bahagian Hal Ehwal Undang-Undang (BHEUU). The valuable insights gathered will contribute to refining Malaysia's AI Governance Bill, ensuring it reflects practical perspectives from across the AI ecosystem. Through collaborative engagements such as this, NAIO remains committed to fostering inclusive, evidence-based policymaking that supports innovation while promoting trust, accountability, and responsible AI adoption for Malaysia's digital future.

The National AI Office (NAIO) is pleased to share that our Manager, Innovation Ecosystem & Enablement, Vilasiny S., recently participated in the AI Visionaries Program – Strategy & Governance Master Class, held in Bangkok, Thailand. Organised by the AI Governance Practice Centre (AIGPC) under the Electronic Transactions Development Agency (ETDA), Ministry of Digital Economy and Society of Thailand, the programme convened senior government officials and AI leaders from across the region to strengthen capabilities in AI strategy, governance, ethics, and policy implementation. Representing NAIO, Vilasiny engaged in discussions and collaborative learning on responsible AI governance, digital trust, national AI strategies, and institutional approaches to advancing AI adoption. The programme also provided a valuable platform to exchange experiences and best practices with delegates from Bangladesh, Bhutan, Indonesia, Laos, Maldives, the Philippines, Thailand, Timor-Leste, and Vietnam, fostering meaningful dialogue on the opportunities and challenges of building trusted AI ecosystems across the region. The insights gained from the programme will contribute to NAIO's ongoing efforts in supporting Malaysia's national AI agenda, particularly through the implementation of the National AI Action Plan 2026–2030 (AI Nation 2030).
