The following review of literature illuminates self-advocacy from a North American transformation... more The following review of literature illuminates self-advocacy from a North American transformational learning perspective via meaningful impacts, which arise for adults with developmental disabilities, as well as various communities and their members. For adults with developmental disabilities, increased leadership capabilities and the evolution of new self-concepts continue to be powerful examples of the impact of self-advocacy. For communities, a more prominent voice and personable research within the academic community, increased awareness for some boards and committee members, and the acknowledgement and support of local or online community members are broad examples of the impacts self-advocacy has on us.

A Review of Co-Morbid Disorders of Asperger's Disorder and the Transition to Adulthood

This review includes empirical peer-reviewed articles which support the examination of Asperger's... more This review includes empirical peer-reviewed articles which support the examination of Asperger's Disorder and co-morbid disorders, as well as an analysis of how adolescents with Asperger's Disorder transition to adulthood. Although the focus was on Asperger's Disorder, some studies include Autism Spectrum Disorder samples. It was found that people with Asperger's Disorder generally experience more anxiety than control groups. Rates of non-verbal learning disabilities did not differ significantly from control groups, however it remained unknown if rates of specific learning disabilities differ. The transition to adulthood focused on education, employment, living arrangements, and relationships. The findings revealed that people with Asperger's may have more difficulty in the transition to adulthood, however they were capable of achieving high educational levels, employment, independent living, and successful relationships. It was suggested that anxiety treatments and social skills training be further incorporated into counselling programs, and that future research examine gender differences in the diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis of Asperger's Disorder.

In North America, interests that pervade postsecondary institutions are often covert, yet there i... more In North America, interests that pervade postsecondary institutions are often covert, yet there is an identifiable pulse driving programs, research, conferences, and community service. The pulse can be identified as improvement, change, and innovation. We do this not because we are unwell, but rather as an ethical endeavor that infuses both mind and body in our search to advance our practices, society, and ourselves. Whether we are a student attending these large institutions or simply reflecting upon our current role as faculty we will be able to recall what our teachers did, or did not do, to help us in the past. If we could go back and talk to our teachers, we would identify what was done well and suggest what they might do to improve their teaching. Teacher improvement and training is something that touches all of us as it affects students, parents, professors, and the community at large.

Evidence has emerged which suggests that as a supervisor, the importance of knowing oneself, and ... more Evidence has emerged which suggests that as a supervisor, the importance of knowing oneself, and knowing those that he or she is supervising, is vital to the success of the group. We argue that when conflicting values, attitudes, and beliefs are present amongst the members of the group over an issue (inclusion), or over the behaviours of a member (non-inclusive), the entire group can break down. Therefore, to successfully implement a program, such as inclusion, knowing the attitudes of the staff is vital as a program such as this cannot be successful without positive support.

The principal as school leader and manager was explored because these roles were thought to impact student achievement both directly and indirectly. Specifi c principal leadership behaviors and principal effectiveness were explored as variables potentially impacting both teachers and student achievement. Leadership was considered a variable that could improve teacher effi cacy although it could also diminish this capacity when school leadership was ineffective.

At present there is a global need to assume an inquiry stance to address problems to locate solut... more At present there is a global need to assume an inquiry stance to address problems to locate solutions, as complex problems surface in all walks of life. With new Health and Physical Education provincial curricula emerging in 2019, the province of Ontario (Canada) is also making inquiry a priority. Educators in Ontario are expected to lead students in inquiry efforts yet in order to do this requires teacher training that is authentic, appropriate and professional. The purpose of this study is to examine how aspects of Action Research (AR) can be used to enhance and improve teaching with its inquiry-based learning elements that complement the role of educators and students alike. Journaling in AR is an analysis mode that can help participants achieve certain resolutions within an educational landscape. AR can infuse and nurture teacher self-development within teacher training while improving interpersonal relationships and developing pedagogy via practical experiences. Teacher change through AR occurs within the interactions, experiences and professional development that seems to imbue teacher training.

This research aimed to investigate popular culture to educate in the elementary school classroom.... more This research aimed to investigate popular culture to educate in the elementary school classroom. Using secondary research in education and cultural studies, we investigated how teachers can use popular media to enhance student learning and develop critical media literacy skills. Findings revealed popular culture is a helpful teaching tool in elementary school classrooms. Knowledge of popular culture does not impede education but is a large part of students' literacy practices. By embracing popular culture, students develop the literacies needed to navigate 21st-century schools and engage in critical pedagogy. Further studies are required to establish how elementary school teachers can use popular texts in their classrooms and overcome literacy challenges they may face.
