🤖🕳️ Underground Robotics Hackathon
Earlier this month, we hosted the Underground Robotics Hackathon, bringing together students from multiple universities to tackle a challenging and highly relevant robotics problem.
The assignment pushed teams to design and build a robot capable of navigating complex pipe systems with vertical intersections, while reaching and identifying underground inspection points. Beyond mechanical mobility, teams also had to address sensing, localization, and system integration, keeping track of their robot’s position inside a constrained and unseen environment.
The challenge was inspired by real inspection scenarios, where fast and reliable insight is critical in a hard to access underground spaces. Over the course of the hackathon, teams iterated on designs, tested prototypes, and demonstrated impressive creativity and problem-solving under time pressure.
A total of 34 students participated, forming six multidisciplinary teams. Throughout the event, teams showed strong technical progress, collaboration, and learning culminating in a final day of live demonstrations.
