In the dry forest of Manabí live the Montubio people, small-scale farmers from the Ecuadorian coast who go on a journey but always return to their homeland. After years away, Carlos Humberto returned to his roots to transform degraded land into Montubio Viajero, a restaurant and food forest. The space celebrates traditional food, circularity, and food sovereignty. This kind of community-led transformation is at the core of the Urban Futures program: connecting nature, sustainable food, and culture. Too many young people in Southern Africa are still prevented from accessing essential sexual and reproductive health services because of legal and financial barriers. Hivos, through the Regional SRHR Fund, and the SADC Parliamentary Forum convened a high-level dialogue in Harare, Zimbabwe, to discuss parliamentary leadership on legal reform and sustainable financing for adolescent sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR). The message from the dialogue was clear: parliamentarians have a key role to play, not only in shaping legislation, but also in ensuring that national budgets reflect the health needs and rights of young people. World Pride Amsterdam 2026 kicks off with a monumental walk. From the Dam to the Homomonument 53 bronze tiles have been placed, each dedicated to a hero who helped shape our LGBTQIA+ history. Together they form the Walk of Pride Amsterdam: a unique monument in the heart of the city. Hivos is deeply touched to see some of our heroes, Bessy Ferrera (1979-2019) and Muhsin Hendricks (1967-2025), honored in the Walk of Pride. Both dedicated their lives to advancing LGBTQIA+ rights and paid the ultimate price for being on the frontlines and speaking up for a just and equal world. Tonight, Wednesday 8 July 2026 at 8:45pm Outside De Nieuwe Kerk, the Walk of Pride Amsterdam will be officially opened as part of the opening ceremony of Pride 2026. You can be there and be the first to walk the route.

What happens when we celebrate resilience without questioning the systems that make resilience necessary? Nisrina Nadhifah Rahman from the Connect, Defend, Act! program reflected on the 2026 Digital Rights Asia-Pacific Assembly in Manila, questioning the difference between digital strength and digital power, the growing glorification of the “resilience” of activists and human rights defenders and the built-in power dynamics in AI. Safeguarding civic space requires more than protecting formal freedoms. It demands addressing inequality, leveraging informal power dynamics, and understanding the real conditions that shape how civic actors can Connect, Defend, and Act! Findings from a study conducted by the Institute of International Studies, Universitas Gadjah Mada expose a critical gap between democratic indicators and the real conditions of civic actors in Yogyakarta. These insights are the key to recognizing and addressing not only the surface-level challenges but also the underlying structural forces that serve to systematically suppress civic space. Around the world, foreign agents' laws are increasingly being used to stigmatize civil society, restrict funding, and silence dissent. But the proliferation of these laws is masking something much more sinister: The blocking of civil society organizations from receiving funding by national governments is a threat to the global civil society model itself, and requires a firm, coordinated response. In our most recent #EUSEE article, written by Clarisse Sih, MSc and Bibbi Abruzzini, we show what these laws look like and how civil society is fighting back. https://lnkd.in/depajUwb The EUSEE network is coordinated by Hivos and includes CIVICUS: World Alliance for Citizen Participation Democracy Reporting International Transparency International European Partnership for Democracy (EPD) Forus
