Become a Signatory to ISOCARP's Planners for Peace Statement At the World Urban Forum (WUF13) in Baku last May, ISOCARP launched the member-led Planners for Peace Statement, in response to the growing number of wars and violent conflicts across the globe, affecting communities and the cities, towns and villages they inhabit, the cultural heritage they cherish, the economic livelihoods they have built, the natural eco-systems that they steward. The Statement affirms the essential role of planning in advancing peaceful, inclusive, resilient, and sustainable urban and rural communities. We invite – alongside individual signatories – planning organizations, universities, public authorities, professional associations, NGOs, and other institutions to join this global initiative by becoming institutional signatories. By endorsing the Statement, your organization demonstrates its commitment to the principles of dialogue, social cohesion, equitable development, and responsible planning as foundations for lasting peace, justice and strong institutions. ISOCARP participated in the Swimmable Cities in the Caspian Sea initiative at WUF13 Azerbaijan on the International Day for Biodiversity. The initiative also offered a unique opportunity to engage directly with its vision, including our President swimming alongside the Executive Director of UN-Habitat, the Dutch Ambassador to Baku, Marianne de Jong, global waterambassador Henk Ovink, cofounder Matt Sykes and local swimming club. Supported by UN-Habitat (United Nations Human Settlements Programme), this global mission aims to mainstream ‘swimmability’ in urban planning and integrated water management. By strengthening the connections between water, youth, sport, and housing, cities like Baku can become more liveable, inclusive, and resilient. Launched in the lead up to the Paris Olympics in July 2024, the Swimmable Cities alliance is supporting a global, grassroots movement for swimmable urban waterways. With 236 diverse signatory organisations from 115 cities and communities and 37 countries, the Swimmable Cities Charter champions the Right to Swim, celebrates urban swimming culture, and honours nature. We were delighted to join the networking breakfast held at WUF13 Azerbaijan, graciously hosted by the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Azerbaijan. The gathering brought together the Head of the Netherlands Delegation, Mayor of The Hague Jan van Zanen, and more than 50 participants connected through shared interests in urban development, collaboration, and international exchange. It was a wonderful opportunity to reconnect with colleagues and friends, build new professional relationships, and exchange ideas in such an open and welcoming atmosphere at the start of the WUF13 week. We extend our heartfelt thanks to Mayor Jan van Zanen, Municipality of The Hague, and the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Azerbaijan for their generous hospitality and for creating such a meaningful space for dialogue and connection. We successfully concluded the YPP/YPTDP workshop in Montréal — From Line to Life: Reimagining Montréal’s Old Port Waterfront — in collaboration with ITACUS - the ITA Committee on Underground Space, and the TUNNELLING ASSOCIATION OF CANADA. ✨ Key Takeaways 🔹 The waterfront was never just about the waterfront Every design decision sparked broader conversations on housing affordability, climate resilience, heritage, mobility, and governance. The corridor could not be addressed without considering the future vision of the city itself. 🔹 Thinking beyond the comfort zone The real challenge was moving beyond small-scale thinking. Through strong teamwork and shared confidence, each team not only proposed placing the railway underground but became convinced it was the most appropriate solution. 🔹 Ambition under pressure What surprised everyone — including the participants themselves — was the level of rigorous and ambitious work achieved under intense time constraints, where every idea had to be tested, defended, and refined. We look forward to continuing to engage with young planners through future insightful and collaborative events. Stay tuned for more!
