An institute dedicated to the study of societal challenges, focusing on the histories & afterlives of colonialism

Over ons

The KITLV is a research institute dedicated to the study of societal challenges, focusing on the histories and afterlives of colonialism in the Caribbean, Southeast Asia, and the Netherlands. Our aim is to produce quality research that furthers justice and envisions alternative futures beyond dominant perspectives. Our research is informed by intimate familiarity with the cultures, histories, and languages of the places we study. Combining history, anthropology, archaeology, political science, linguistics, and the arts, our interdisciplinary perspective is critical and sensitive to marginalised voices. Weaving together academic and other forms of knowledge, we aim to co-create and make community engagement a feature of KITLV practice. Extending well beyond universities and research institutes, the KITLV’s networks include NGOs, policymakers, artists, filmmakers, journalists, writers, and activists. Together, we initiate, facilitate, and contribute to public discussions. The KITLV aspires to be a space that is engaging, creative, and experimental, fostering inclusivity and a vibrant staff that reflects a diverse society. The KITLV is an institute of the Koninklijke Nederlandse Akademie van Wetenschappen / Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW).
