    Op (de) T bij …LeydenJar Met de Strijp‑T-pot en Strijp‑T-glazen op zak gaan Boudie Hoogedeure en Cecile Smeets op pad om een kijkje achter de schermen te nemen bij bedrijven op Strijp‑T. Dit keer schuiven ze aan bij Elizabeth Couves (Lizzie) van LeydenJar, gevestigd in gebouw TX. Wat doet jouw bedrijf? Lizzie vertelt: “LeydenJar houdt zich bezig met innovatieve batterijtechnologie van 100% silicium, die oorspronkelijk is voortgekomen uit een uitvinding binnen de solar sector. Onze technologie maakt het mogelijk om batterijen sneller op te laden, meer energie op te slaan en bovendien langer mee op één acculading te laten gaan. Hiervoor ontwikkelen we een speciale machine, die deze zomer hier in onze bedrijfshal in TX wordt opgesteld. Op dit moment werken we met gemiddeld tien mensen op Strijp‑T, ter voorbereiding op de opbouw van deze machine. In augustus groeit dat aantal naar zo’n 40 collega’s en aan het einde van het jaar verwachten we door te groeien naar 70 medewerkers.” Wat is jouw rol? “Als projectmanager ben ik inmiddels al vijf jaren bezig met het opzetten van deze nieuwe fabriek,” vertelt Lizzie. “Mijn motivatie? Werken bij een bedrijf dat écht bijdraagt aan duurzaamheid. Zo kwam ik in contact met dit veelbelovende hightechbedrijf en maakte ik kennis met het ecosysteem van de Brainport Eindhoven-regio. Ik ontdekte de kansen en voordelen van Strijp‑T en gebouw TX op gebied van doorgroeimogelijkheden en onze stroombehoefte. Bovendien sprak de campusomgeving ons enorm aan. Het zorgt voor een prettige werkplek wat onze collega’s aantrekt en motiveert, terwijl deze inspirerend omgeving tegelijk zorgt voor een professionele uitstraling van onze fabriek.  Daarnaast is het ontzettend leuk om onderdeel te zijn van de Strijp‑T community. Zo hebben we bijvoorbeeld meegedaan aan de Hightech Ontdekkingsroute in juni, waarbij we letterlijk onze deuren hebben geopend om anderen een kijkje in de keuken te geven. En sluiten we aan bij andere community activiteiten, een mooie manier om teambuilding te combineren met het leren kennen van andere Strijp-T’ers.” Bij wie en waarom wil je dat wij de volgende keer op (de) T gaan? “Hier aan het einde van de straat zit Settels Savenije Group of Companies” antwoordt Lizzie. “Wij zien in hen een grote kans om hightech systemen, zoals die van ons, verder te ontwikkelen.   • 𝐍𝐨 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐮𝐦𝐞𝐫 𝐬𝐰𝐚𝐩. 𝐍𝐨 𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐞𝐭 𝐛𝐮𝐭𝐭𝐨𝐧. 𝐉𝐮𝐬𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐜𝐞𝐥𝐥.   On July 14, the European Commission adopted a delegated act exempting wearables, smartwatches, fitness trackers, and smart glasses from the EU's user-replaceable battery mandate that otherwise takes effect in 2027.   𝐖𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐡 𝐧𝐨𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐢𝐬𝐞𝐥𝐲 𝐰𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐝.  These batteries still have to be replaceable — just by an independent professional, not the end user. So "sealed" here means sealed to the owner, not sealed for the life of the device.   𝐖𝐡𝐲 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐦𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐝𝐞𝐬𝐢𝐠𝐧 𝐠𝐨𝐚𝐥𝐩𝐨𝐬𝐭𝐬.  If a device isn't built around a consumer swapping the cell, the burden shifts almost entirely onto the cell itself: it has to hold its capacity and its safety margin across the full service life the OEM is designing for, because there's no easy reset button for a degrading battery.   𝐒𝐢𝐥𝐲𝐭𝐞™ 𝐰𝐚𝐬 𝐛𝐮𝐢𝐥𝐭 𝐚𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐞𝐱𝐚𝐜𝐭 𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐮𝐫𝐞  Cycle stability and safety margin as first-order requirements, not afterthoughts. Our anode is already engineered to hold over 500 cycles without relying on external pressure to maintain performance — the kind of durability a sealed, professional-only-replaceable cell now must deliver on its own, with no consumer reset button left in the design.   Worth watching how this develops across the wearables category as OEMs re-weigh what "good enough" battery longevity means when there's no swap option left.   Get the technical data on Silyte. Ten years in, our drive to innovate has carried us on a powerful journey. 2016 — Christian Rood and Gabriel de Scheemaker founded LeydenJar as a spin-out around the silane PECVD process for silicon anodes, developed at Dutch research organization ECN. 2018 — Delivered our first proof of concept in pouch-cell format, then demonstrated the market's highest energy density at 1350 Wh/L and proved roll-to-roll manufacturability in our GEN2 tool. 2021 — Closed a €22M Series A, our final step toward market entry. 2022 — Secured €30M in EIB financing, backed by a European Commission guarantee, to help scale our technology and production. 2024 — Chose Eindhoven's Strijp-T as the location for PlantOne, our first anode factory. 2025 — We hit a defining milestone: the launch of Silyte™, the world's first 100% silicon anode.   Now comes an exciting step yet: LeydenJar Plant One, our 70 MWh silicon anode foil facility, under construction through 2026 and entering production in 2027.   The past years were about proving the science. During their visit, we showcased Silyte which is our pure silicon anode that we believe will help anchor a strong, resilient battery industry in Europe. Silyte is a critical, next-generation battery material, that fits into existing lithium-ion battery manufacturing lines in Europe and beyond. This visit really highlights the incredible opportunity Europe has right now to impact the battery industry. Scaling this technology up to mass production is the next step. This opens the door for European automotive cell production to move to higher energy density cells, once Silyte hits critical scale. Europe can also play a key role here by foster the skills in what each country does best:  Combining deep tech innovation from the Netherlands → large scale production in France. Bringing a vision of this scale to life is a collective effort. We are focused on aligning with strategic partners, including the European Investment Bank, whose support will be vital in helping us transition from our current state of technology to true gigafactory-scale manufacturing.   • Incredible hardware, waiting on the energy to match.   At LeydenJar, we are amazed by the continuous innovations in the consumer electronics space. Every day, both big and small tech companies announce new products and features that will launch it right into the future. Unfortunately, these devices are limited by battery capacity and size.   Here's what it looks like in practice: → XR headsets designed for AI-assisted work sessions: 2 hours of active use.  → Smart rings designed for continuous health monitoring — derailed by a daily charging routine users resent.  → AI glasses designed for always-on computing: 3–4 hours. Promising technology held back by a single constraint.  → Autonomous drones designed for inspection, delivery, and surveillance: 20–30 minutes of flight time. Grounded before the job is done.   These aren't engineering failures. The hardware teams building these devices are exceptional.   The constraint is the battery, specifically, the anode inside it. Every wearable and drone operates within a fixed form factor. You can't make the battery bigger without changing the device.
