We recently wrapped up a project in the Netherlands with Thunnissen and Metselbedrijf Boesveld B.V. A beautiful five meter tall tree, built into the brickwork. It’s exactly the kind of challenge we like working on. Something that would normally be difficult to build by hand can be mapped out in advance by our software, with every brick planned before the robot starts laying. The end result is a perfect demonstration of our bespoke capabilities and the intricacies our robots can handle. What's even more incredible is that it will be there for 100+ years. Dutch robotics startup Monumental has raised a $32 million Series B led by Khosla Ventures to scale a fleet of autonomous, electric robots that already lay real brick on job sites across Europe. Founded in 2021 by Salar al Khafaji (CEO) and Sebastiaan Visser (CTO) — co-founders of data-visualization firm Silk, acquired by Palantir in 2016 — Monumental runs more than 100 robots that use sensors, computer vision and small cranes to lay brick and mortar to millimeter precision, all driven by its AI platform, Atrium. Salar al Khafaji sold his last company, Silk, to Palantir in 2016. A week after he left, he knew he was going to build again. Al Khafaji landed on construction—an industry many in tech saw as a graveyard. “Most people told me it’s a really, really bad idea,” he told Fortune. His Amsterdam-based construction robotics company, Monumental raised a $32 million Series B led by Khosla Ventures, Fortune learned exclusively. The round follows a $25 million round in February 2024 co-led by Plural and Hummingbird. We’ve just announced an oversubscribed $32 million round led by Khosla Ventures, with participation from Plural and Hummingbird Ventures. I’m only 2 months into this new job and Monumental continues to deliver. It's rare to find a company that's not only pushing the boundaries of robotics and AI, but doing it to solve one of the biggest challenges of our time: the housing shortage. This team operates on warped time. Things that take months or years elsewhere happen here in days. Amidst all the hype in robotics, our team has achieved one of the rarest things in this industry: moving beyond demoware. Instead of polishing robots in a lab, our progress happens live on real construction sites. We are deployed, with customers, and generating revenue. We’ve built more than 100 homes so far, plus a school, a community centre, a sports centre, a hotel, and commercial units. In fact, half of everything we've delivered has gone up in the last three months. Our business model also keeps surprising people: contractors don't buy or rent robots or software from us. We bid for jobs and only get paid when we deliver finished walls. Very few jobs in technology let you leave an enduring and tangible mark at the same time as feeling good about what you’re doing. What we’ve built is now part of the permanent fabric of the countries we work in. There’s huge demand for new housing, but skilled tradespeople, especially masons, are becoming harder to find, and most sites still rely on the same processes they have for decades.
