Three arms. One choice. A window into memory. The Y-maze looks almost too simple: a rodent (or zebrafish) free to wander into any of three identical arms. But that single decision — revisit an arm or explore something new? — is one of the cleanest readouts we have for spatial and working memory. Our newly updated blog walks through how this test is being used right now: 🧠 Alzheimer's & tau pathology models 🩹 Traumatic brain injury recovery 💊 Compound screening against neuroinflammation 🐟 Zebrafish memory studies 🐍 …and even snakes The catch has always been the scoring — arm entries only mean something if every single one is judged the same way, trial after trial. That's exactly what EthoVision 19 was built for: deep-learning tracking that detects true arm commitment (not just a nose poke), turning hours of manual scoring into clean data in seconds. 👉 See the accuracy for yourself — try EthoVision 19 free: https://hubs.li/Q04pGnsc0 #Neuroscience #BehavioralResearch #EthoVision

🏆 ¡Enhorabuena, España! Spain are World Cup champions once again—the country’s second title, secured with a dramatic extra-time victory. As the celebrations continue, we wanted to spotlight another kind of Spanish excellence: researchers advancing behavioral science with EthoVision. 🧠 At the University of Valencia, Dr. Marta Rodríguez-Arias’ group studies the neuroscience of addiction — how reward and stress shape behavior — work that helps illuminate the mechanisms behind substance use disorders. 🐟 At the Institute of Environmental Assessment and Water Research (IDAEA-CSIC) in Barcelona, Dr. Demetrio Raldúa and Dr. Eva Prats use zebrafish behavior to reveal how chemicals in our environment affect the brain and nervous system. Two very different research areas, connected by one shared foundation: rigorous, reproducible behavioral data. Winning takes a team — in sport and in science. Here's to the Spanish researchers helping us all understand behavior a little better. 👏 #WorldCup2026 #Spain #Neuroscience #BehavioralScience #ZebrafishResearch #EthoVision #Noldus

How much can an insect’s early-life experience shape what happens later? Researchers studying turnip sawflies found that nutritional stress affected some traits—but left others surprisingly unchanged. Using automated video tracking with EthoVision, they were able to uncover how early experiences can influence development, metabolism, and adult behavior in different ways. What changed, what stayed resilient, and what can insects teach us about the lasting effects of early-life experience? It was great meeting so many of our customers at the European Zebrafish Meeting, and hearing how well DanioVision is working for their automated zebrafish larvae tracking. We also noticed growing interest in social interaction studies, and we're already exploring new features for Ethovision to make this kind of research even easier. Great to catch up with fellow vendors too, and exchange ideas. Curious how DanioVision or EthoVision could support your zebrafish research? Get in touch with our team, we'd love to talk. #Noldus #EthoVisionXT #DanioVision #zebrafischresearch

What's really slowing your lab down? 🔬 We hear it from labs every week, sometimes it's the hardware (cameras, cabling, arena setup), sometimes it's the analysis afterward (tracking, scoring, exporting). We're curious which one hits harder for your team right now. Vote below and tell us why in the comments, the more specific, the better (we're always listening for what to build guides on next 👇)

We love seeing FaceReader in action in real educational settings like this one. Jess Bishop recently completed the Applied Neuromarketing summer school at Corvinus University of Budapest, where she got hands-on experience with FaceReader alongside EEG and eye tracking tools during a guest demonstration from Tivadar Limbacher. She even got to see her own emotional responses measured in real time. What stood out most to us was Jess's final research project, investigating whether AI-generated images on hotel booking platforms influence customer decision-making. It's exactly the kind of applied, real-world thinking that makes facial expression analysis such a valuable tool for the next generation of marketers and researchers. Congratulations, Jess, on completing the program, and thank you for sharing your experience with FaceReader. #Neuromarketing #FacialExpressionAnalysis #ConsumerResearch
Proud to share that I have recently completed the Applied Neuromarketing summer school at Corvinus University of Budapest 🎉🇭🇺 The programme took place inside the NEDIMARC - Neuro- and Digital Marketing Research Center and covered the foundations of consumer neuroscience and neuromarketing, focusing on how perception, attention, emotion and decision-making shape consumer behaviour. We also explored research methods such as EEG, eye tracking, GSR and facial coding, gaining an insight into how these techniques are used within marketing research. A highlight was a guest demonstration from Tivadar Limbacher, where we saw Bitbrain EEG, Tobii eye tracking and Noldus Information Technology FaceReader in action, and I even got to experience myself how my own brain activity, visual attention and emotional responses can be measured in real time! One of the most rewarding parts of the programme was designing and carrying out our own eye-tracking study into whether the integration of AI-generated images in hotel booking platforms influences customers' decision-making and their likelihood of booking. Seeing the project through from research design to data collection, analysis and presenting our findings was an invaluable experience. Stepping outside my comfort zone through new experiences, getting to know students from around the world and exploring Budapest together also added so much to the experience and created some amazing memories to look back on! A huge thank you goes to Ákos Varga PhD and Alexa Rudolf for delivering such an engaging programme, and NTU Global for the scholarship that made this opportunity possible 🌟

A coding scheme can look perfect on paper, until one early decision creates problems later in your study. Should a behavior be coded as a point or a state? Can behaviors overlap? Are your keycodes helping coders work efficiently? When building a coding scheme in The Observer, these structural choices can directly affect the consistency of your coding and the quality of your data. Some may even require complete re-coding if they are not considered from the start. Our latest blog highlights the key decisions to make before data collection begins, along with practical tips and a downloadable checklist. Explore the five decisions to get right from the start: https://hubs.li/Q04pjPf70 #TheObserver #BehavioralResearch #BehavioralCoding #ObservationalResearch #ResearchMethods

Today is Be Open About Animal Research Day 2026. More than 150 researchers from leading Dutch research institutes, universities, and companies are speaking out in support of openness about animal research and the importance of using different research methods in the development of new treatments and medicines. At Noldus, we believe transparency is essential to responsible science. As Lucas Noldus highlights, our tools help researchers automate behavioral testing, minimize disturbance to animals, and support refinement and reduction in animal research. What does openness in animal research mean to today’s researchers?
