In Campinas, Brazil, we presented our vision on how to align the whole coffee supply chain to work towards scalable, affordable, practical emission reductions. It’s very doable. We have a lot of programs that will start in the next growing season. The key is to work WITH the existing ecosystem, WITH (fertilizer) technologies that are proven and scalable, WITH risks that are aligned to stakeholders who can actually bear them, WITH the patience to make it happen across many years, WITH the creativity and flexibility to change things when needed. Sijbrand Tieleman is in Brazil the rest of the week. He’s more than happy to get you involved.
Proba
Milieudiensten
Food companies are asking for verified Scope 3 reductions. It starts with fertilizer.
Over ons
Proba helps the agri-food supply chain deliver on climate commitments where it matters most, starting with fertilizer emissions. We address Scope 3 emissions through practical methodologies, independent certification, and supply chain project development. Our work translates reductions into certified Scope 3 results that food companies and traders can use to prove progress, reward farmers, and build trusted climate claims.

We love coffee, and bet you do too. Next week our CEO @Sijbrand Tieleman is speaking at Coffee LATAM summit organized by Informa in Campinas, Brazil on exactly this: "Fertilizer Emissions in Coffee: The Scope 3 Gap Your Supply Chain Can Already Fix" The tools to quantify and cut fertilizer emissions at scale exist now, and the business case can actually be positive, lowering emissions while building farmer resilience. Most supply chains just aren't taking full advantage of it. We look forward to meeting all our partners and customers there. If you buy, trade, or roast coffee, well pretty much all attending will have some ties to coffee… Come find us! 28 July, 14:55 at Royal Palm Hall, Campinas, Brazil

Scope 3 fertilizer work rarely stops at one step. With Proba, you can: - Quantify fertilizer emissions with methodologies built for the job, not generic tools stretched to fit - Certify reductions as Inset Units your buyers and auditors will actually trust - Design a fertilizer program that works in the field and fits the budget - Connect your reductions to the food companies that need them for Scope 3 - Report Scope 3 progress with traceable, audit-ready data Five different needs, one company for all of them. We just made this a lot easier to find on our site. If you’re new here, go check it out.

Nitrogen stabilizers cut N₂O emissions, but the actual work is done by either DMPP or DCD. Both are nitrification inhibitors, both block the same enzyme, both slow the conversion of ammonium to nitrate in soil. But they aren't interchangeable. DCD: the older one. Cheap, water-soluble, but mobile in soil and needs a high dose. DMPP: works at a tenth of the dose, stays put, and builds straight into compound fertilizers. We wrote up the full comparison in a new blog. Give it a read! It's for nerds!

We've published a project with with Landor fenaco Genossenschaft for public consultation! The project is based in Switzerland and replacing conventional nitrogen fertilizer with verified lower-carbon alternatives. We're applying our PM.0002 methodology, Adoption of low-emission fertilizer strategies to transition to low-carbon agriculture. The active public consultation period is our way of inviting outside experts to challenge and strengthen the project before it's finalized. Thoughts or feedback? We'd love to hear them. The consultation period runs Monday 6 July to Thursday 6 August. Read more about the project with the link in the comments!

“Trust us, it's sustainable" doesn't survive a Scope 3 audit. Proba's MRV Platform works at field level: named fertilizer, specific active ingredient, real PCF, soil class, crop, season. Every reduction is certified and traceable on the Proba Registry. 2025 season results, calculated from field data, not regional averages with reduction numbers like: - 7.5% potatoes - 49.5% spring barley - 56.9% winter wheat The MRV Platform rolling out soon. Last week was International Fertilizer Association (IFA)'s first Nutrient Use Efficiency Tracking Hackathon which was hosted in Cork, Ireland. Which our Konstantinos Dimitriou participated in! In his own words: “Cork. A university classroom. A group of PhDs, practitioners, and students who collectively forgot they had careers to go back to. Two days of exactly the kind of work this industry needs more of” The winning idea, N Able, was a traceability platform tracking nitrogen use efficiency all the way from farmer to food company to consumer. The runner-up, N-Credit, tied NUE data to agricultural lending, so efficient farmers could access better financing. And yes, Konstantinos was part of that winning team. Glad to see the industry players pushing on this. Till the next hackathon?

This week Proba welcomes Camilla Bovati to the team, who is joining us as a Sustainability Consultant. In her own words: “My background is in sustainable finance and ESG research, where I have worked on assessing sustainability strategies, targets, and the environmental impact of projects across a wide range of sectors. Through these experiences, I became increasingly interested in the role that high-quality data plays in driving credible climate action and helping organizations turn ambition into measurable outcomes. I am particularly motivated by the prospect of helping companies navigate the challenges of decarbonization and build more transparent and resilient agri-food supply chains.” We’re happy to have Camilla on board! Welcome to the team!

What’s going on in the Nitrogen scene? If you’re in the food or fertilizer business, you know all too well how important nitrogen is. Nikos Vellis attended the Nitrogen Workshop in Sassari organized by the University of Sassari a couple weeks ago and a few things stood out from the broader conference: - Dose matters. - The data gaps are real. - And inhibitors aren't always a silver bullet. We presented Proba's work on refined N₂O emission factors for nitrogen-stabilized fertilizers. Reach out if you’re curious to learn more on this. It was good to connect with key players across academia and industry. Read our reflections from this workshop, link in the comments! We'll be back next year.

Colombia emits 5.59 kg CO₂-eq per kg of coffee. Mexico emits 1.46. Same crop. Same region. Nearly four times the difference. We covered the Latin American Coffee Carbon Footprint Baseline Study which breaks down the how and why. The differences between fertilizer-related emissions across Brazil, Colombia, Mexico and other Latin American countries is significant. If you buy, trade, or sell coffee, this study is relevant to you. Worth a read if you haven't yet. Link in the comments
