Ridha J. Bakhtiar has been at it for a few weeks already. He has joined Wonuola and Sabrina as Summer intern with us. Ridha is studying architectural engineering at the Hogeschool Rotterdam and will be helping and supporting Jort Winkel and Diederik Veenendaal with the design and engineering of the earthen noise barrier, currently developed by Terrestrial for the Dutch railways, ProRail. Next year he plans to continue his studies with a Master's either in Civil Engineering or Building Technology at TU Delft or Technische Universiteit Eindhoven, to continue a career in structural engineering, building physics and/or digital fabrication. He's open to your thoughts on which path to choose. For now, wish him luck!

A busy June in Stein, Switzerland! The timber structure of the Stellar Pavilion is now assembled. In just a little more than four weeks on site, the pre-assembled timber wings were brought together into the complete roof structure. After months of digital planning, CNC production and modular pre-assembly, this was the moment where the project came to fruition. What is most impressive to see is the incredible craftsmanship of the carpenters from ERNE AG Holzbau. The accumulated tolerances coming from hundreds of individual timber elements had to be carefully distributed during the final assembly, with precision, experience and a lot of judgement on site. This is a strong example of post-digital production in timber construction: the final quality depends equally on computational planning and fabrication, material behavior as it does on the hands and judgement of the people assembling it. 🎉Banwag Pharos wins the Gran Prix Malasakit Award at the Good Design Award Philippines 2026! We're proud to share that Banwag Pharos — the bamboo gathering space in Parang, Maguindanao — has taken home the Red Award, the Gold Award, and the Gran Prix Malasakit Award, the country's highest design honor, awarded by the Design Center of the Philippines. The structure serves as a shared sanctuary for the Muslim, Christian, and Lumad communities of the region — a 9-meter-high, 16-meter-wide bamboo lamella dome built to withstand both hurricane-force winds and old social divides. Summum Engineering was proud to provide the structural engineering behind the project: global design calculations for the bamboo, steel, and membrane elements, wind load analysis against Philippine and European standards, and the structural logic behind the digitally fabricated stainless steel nodes that hold the whole system together. Huge congratulations to Studio Impossible Projects for leading the design and build from concept to completion, and to the Kawayan Collective for providing the bamboo. Most of all, congratulations to the communities of Parang, who made this project mean something far beyond its structure. Double trouble! This Summer we are joined by Wonuola Abiodun from Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Sabrina Huang from TU Delft. Wonu just completed her Bachelor's in Civil Engineering and Architecture at MIT. She is already working on the main stage for the Into The Great Wide Open festival on Vlieland this Summer, entirely made of bamboo, designed and built by Robert van Kats, Erno Langenberg, Marten van Herk / Studio Akeka and friends, in close collaboration with Ontwerpbureau Triomf. Our thanks to MIT's MISTI internship program. Sabrina is studying for her Master's in Building Technology at TU Delft's Faculty of Architecture. She will start her internship by working on the winning design for an art installation. This timber hyperboloid tower will be the centerpiece for new urban redevelopment, 'Domein aan de Dommel' by BPD | Bouwfonds Gebiedsontwikkeling in Gemeente Sint-Michielsgestel, designed by Elmo V. / studio elmo vermijs, and to be built by Patrick Schreven / ecoXbouw. Currently in production: an exciting timber canopy in Stein, Switzerland! Inspired by neo-Gothic stellar vaults, this project explores how seemingly complex architectural structures can become buildable using standardized timber beams, modular logic and digital fabrication. The roof consists of around four thousand individually CNC-cut timber elements fabricated from straight, standardized material. Its fully symmetrical geometry supports efficient fabrication and assembly despite the geometric complexity. Its four folded CLT columns are robotically milled and combine drainage, stability and optimized transitions to the roof geometry within a single component. What is particularly interesting during production is the constant negotiation between computational precision and fabrication reality. Machine logic, CAM interpretation, tolerances, material behaviour and craftsmanship continuously shape the outcome. A good reminder that digital fabrication is not simply the execution of a finished design, it actively informs geometry, detailing and architectural decisions. The project is currently being fabricated by our client, ERNE AG Holzbau — more to come on production and assembly of the entire canopy! We are so very honoured to announce as official Host that the World Bamboo Congress (WBC) will return to Europe after 15 years! The event will take place between 7-11 June 2027, Rotterdam, Netherlands, at Theater Zuidplein. It will feature the most cutting edge, state-of-the-art scientific research from around the world on bamboo cultivation, nutrition, sustainability, technology, design, engineering, construction, and its many other applications. Simultaneously hosting the 5th edition of the European Bamboo Expo and the 2nd edition of Bouw met Bamboe!, this will make this World Bamboo Congress one of the largest ever gatherings of science and industry on bamboo. With the support of Rotterdam Partners and VKOZ events & communicatie we succesfully won the bid with the World Bamboo Organization (WBO) to bring the WBC to Rotterdam. Co-organized with Atelier Nomadic and NAP Ingenieurs with additional support from the Ernest Israëls Foundation, VGF - Pre-financing & Guarantee Fund and TBI Klimaattrein, we are hoping to welcome you all next year!
