Last week, Sustenso participated in the Young Algaeneers Symposium (YAS) 2026 in Wageningen as a Silver Sponsor. A valuable week of discussions, knowledge sharing and new perspectives from across the microalgae and seaweed community.   YAS brings together young scientists and entrepreneurs working to advance algae-based innovation. Throughout the symposium, Nicola Lai presented Sustenso and our latest projects, while Alessia De Maio met with many participants at our booth, discussing our activities and the future of sustainable microalgae-based solutions. Our Scientific Advisor, Prof. Joost Teixeira de Mattos, led an in-depth case study session in which participants worked on a practical challenge and presented their results at the end of the week.   A particular highlight was hearing Prof. Maria Barbosa speak about recent advances in bioprocess engineering at AlgaePARC, Wageningen University & Research. We are grateful to Wageningen University & Research for its continued contribution to the development of the microalgae sector.   We were also pleased to see Algreen B.V. present their work during the symposium. Our collaboration continues to develop, and we would like to acknowledge Stefano Canziani for his involvement in helping strengthen this partnership.   Thank you to the YAS organizing team, the speakers, participants and everyone we had the opportunity to meet throughout the week. We look forward to continuing the conversations and collaborations.

Last week, Chata M. and Alessia De Maio were in Paris for in-cosmetics Global 2026. A valuable few days of conversations, inspiration and perspective across the personal care ingredients industry. In-cosmetics Global brings together the global cosmetics community around ingredient innovation, formulation expertise and the trends shaping the next generation of beauty. This year’s programme covered themes including sustainability, technical innovation, product testing, formulation techniques and marketing trends. It was a good reminder that events like this are not only about new ingredients, but about dialogue, meeting suppliers, formulators, researchers and industry peers, and better understanding where the market is heading. Earlier this week in Wageningen, we officially kicked off our MIT R&D project FycoTec. It was great to start this journey together with our partners and supporters. In FycoTec, Sustenso and Algreen B.V. are developing an integrated Spirulina biorefinery technology, where Spirulina is cultivated using agrifood side streams, and processed to extract phycocyanin, the natural blue pigment from Spirulina. What makes this project especially exciting is the cascade approach: beyond phycocyanin, we aim to preserve and valorise additional valuable fractions such as proteins, lipids, and carbohydrates, keeping them available for downstream applications instead of losing them in the process. Our roles in the project: - Sustenso focuses on optimizing and scaling the phycocyanin extraction processes - Algreen B.V. focuses on maximizing recovery and application development of the remaining biomass components for food, nutraceutical, and cosmetic markets A big thank you to Craeghs Consultancy, and specifically Emma Deijkers and Rex Vroon, for joining the kickoff and for their valuable contribution to getting FycoTec off the ground. We’re excited to get to work and share updates as we move forward toward a circular, scalable process and another concrete step in the transition to a bio-based economy.

Vorige week ontvingen we bij InVesta bestuurders van het Joint Research Centre (JRC) van de Europese Commissie. Hun bezoek onderstreepte de rol van InVesta als een van de belangrijke locaties binnen de Flagship Valley van het REFORMERS Energy Valleys - Horizon Europe project, waar innovatieve toepassingen in de praktijk worden getest, toegepast en zichtbaar gemaakt. Tijdens het programma kregen de bezoekers via een reeks presentaties inzicht in zowel de ontwikkelingen op onze locatie als de bredere aanpak van de Flagship Valley. Zo vertelden Peter Simões over de innovatieactiviteiten bij InVesta, Joshua Dauda namens New Energy Coalition over de bredere aanpak van de Flagship Valley, en gaven ook Alliander, hydevco bv en Sustenso een inkijk in hun werk. De bijeenkomst werd afgesloten met een rondleiding over onze locatie, waar de innovaties ook van dichtbij te zien waren. Dank aan de sprekers Joshua Dauda, Ben Tubben, Bob Busser en Chata Mundell voor het delen van hun kennis en expertise.
