This call specifically targets intensive, hands-on knowledge transfer for culturing and analyzing human primary or iPSC-derived cells within complex 3D contexts, such as organ-on-chip systems or organoids. 💡 How does it work? 𝐍𝐢𝐞𝐮𝐰: 𝐍𝐂𝐚𝐝-𝐫𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭 ‘𝐃𝐢𝐞𝐫𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐧 𝐢𝐧 𝐍𝐞𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐝, 𝟐𝟎𝟏𝟓-𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟒’ Op maandag 15 juni heeft NCad-voorzitter Nico van Meeteren het nieuwe NCad-rapport aangeboden aan staatssecretaris Silvio Erkens van het ministerie van LVVN. Het aantal dierproeven in Nederland is de afgelopen 10 jaar met 20% gedaald tot 423.970 in 2024. Met deze daling zet een langere trend door. De daling komt door verfijningen in onderzoeksmethoden, proefdiervrije alternatieven en technologische innovatie. Er is wel een sterke stijging te zien bij proeven voor soortbescherming en milieu. Dat aantal steeg van 22.631 naar maar liefst 100.645 per jaar in 2024. Dit komt door beleidsgedreven vragen vanuit nieuwe Europese en nationale regelgeving zoals de natuurherstelverordening. Het gaat om dierproeven voor het meten van de staat van de natuur- en waterkwaliteit en de bescherming van volksgezondheid en de veestapel. De meest dierproeven (32% van het totaal) gebeuren om te voldoen aan wet- en regelgeving of voor routineproductie van biologisch materiaal. Europese wet- en regelgeving schrijft voor dat de veiligheid, kwaliteit en effectiviteit van chemische stoffen, medicijnen, gewasbeschermingsmiddelen door onderzoek moet worden vastgesteld. Dit leidt in de praktijk tot een aanhoudende vraag naar dierproeven. 𝗠𝗲𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗼𝗿𝗴𝗮𝗻𝗼𝗶𝗱𝘀? - 𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗻𝗲𝘄 𝗱𝗼𝗼𝗿𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝘄𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗻’𝘀 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵 Processes like menstruation and endometrial repair have long been 𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗹𝗼𝗿𝗲𝗱. Access to human tissue during the perimenstrual phase is limited, and many aspects of female reproductive biology have historically received less research attention and are difficult to capture in traditional animal models. Now, researchers have developed hormone-responsive endometrial organoids that reproduce key epithelial processes associated with the menstrual cycle. Through 𝗿𝗲𝗽𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗼𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵𝗱𝗿𝗮𝘄𝗮𝗹 𝗼𝗳 𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗴𝗲𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗴𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗲, the organoids undergo cyclical phases of 𝗴𝗿𝗼𝘄𝘁𝗵, 𝗱𝗶𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻, 𝘁𝗶𝘀𝘀𝘂𝗲 𝘀𝗵𝗲𝗱𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗿𝗲𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻. However, unlike in vivo, this epithelial model does not shed spontaneously. Shedding is induced mechanically after progesterone withdrawal. While this is thus 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗮 𝗺𝗼𝗱𝗲𝗹 𝗿𝗲𝗽𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗿𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝘀𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺 and is still lacking other important aspects of in vivo endometrium, including stromal tissue, immune cells, and oocytes, this research highlights something bigger: - We can now study 𝗳𝘂𝗻𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗵𝘂𝗺𝗮𝗻 𝘁𝗶𝘀𝘀𝘂𝗲𝘀 in vitro - Important, historically overlooked topics are getting the attention they deserve https://lnkd.in/ecpbnkGT #Organoids #NAMs #3Rs #WomensHealth #RegenerativeMedicine #AnimalFreeResearch

𝗠𝗮𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗺𝗲𝗮𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴𝗳𝘂𝗹 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗻𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗹𝘆 𝘀𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗸 𝗶𝗻𝗻𝗼𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 In June 2024, we had the pleasure of co-organizing the symposium “𝘛𝘩𝘦 3𝘙𝘴 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘕𝘈𝘔𝘴: 𝘢𝘭𝘭-𝘪𝘯𝘤𝘭𝘶𝘴𝘪𝘷𝘦?”— a day filled with insightful discussions, new perspectives, and opportunities for people to connect (https://lnkd.in/e6rDNrfn ). What stood out was the open and respectful dialogue between researchers from different fields and with different perspectives on the future of biomedical science. The symposium created a space to exchange knowledge on New Approach Methodologies (NAMs), but also to explore potential collaborations. During the event, discussions around ongoing work between Paul Kouwer (https://sbmatrices.com/) and Hans Clevers (https://lnkd.in/eFQAHkgT) led to a collaboration on PIC-invasin as an alternative to animal-derived basement membrane extracts, such as Matrigel (https://lnkd.in/eWTmBp6c). It’s inspiring to see how a single interaction can develop so fast into something with real impact. Moments like these remind us why creating spaces for dialogue and connection is so important. “Het Perspectief-programma vervult een essentiële brugfunctie tussen fundamenteel onderzoek en het vermarkten van ontwikkelde producten”, reageerde Marcel Levi vorige maand op het besluit van het ministerie van Economische Zaken en Klimaat stopt met de financiering van het Perspectief-programma. Die essentiële brugfunctie is onder andere te zien bij het Perspectief-project SMART Organ-on-Chip, onder leiding van Jaap den Toonder. In dit project werken kennisinstellingen en eindgebruikers, waaronder TNO samen aan een cruciale stap in de ontwikkeling van organ-on-chip: standaardisatie. Organ-on-chip-technologie maakt het mogelijk om miniatuurmodellen te bouwen van menselijke organen. Daarmee kan bijvoorbeeld de werking en toxiciteit van medicijnen getest worden. Dat maakt het proces goedkoper, efficiënter en het draagt bij aan het verminderen van dierproeven. Hoewel Nederland wereldwijd koploper is op de technologie, blijft de brede toepassing nog achter. Elk lab ontwikkelt namelijk zijn eigen chip, met eigen formaten en aansluitingen. Juist in deze ontwikkelfase wordt het verschil gemaakt. Door eindgebruikers vanaf het begin te betrekken en via een industriële adviesraad continue te toetsen aan praktijkbehoeften, ontstaan oplossingen die niet alleen innovatief zijn, maar ook toepasbaar.   Het resultaat: een proof of concept en prototype voor een gestandaardiseerd organ-on-chip platform, nieuwe modules en zelfs een startup ARTIC Technologies. Dit is de kracht van Perspectief: hier wordt de brug geslagen van veelbelovend onderzoek naar werkende innovaties met maatschappelijke impact. Benieuwd naar het volledige verhaal? Deze internationale call biedt kansen voor innovatieve R&D-samenwerkingen met partners uit meerdere landen, gericht op het versnellen van biotechnologische innovaties met maatschappelijke en economische impact.
