Modern systems only work when they are coordinated. As payments become more digital, connected and automated, governance becomes more important – not less. Good governance helps ensure: • clear rules and expectations • accountability and oversight • safe and scalable innovation This becomes even more important as automation and AI increase system complexity. Questions of trust, responsibility and accountability become harder, but also more critical. In a system like payments, coordination is not optional. It is what enables trust, interoperability and resilience across the ecosystem – ensuring innovation can evolve safely and reliably over time. In the latest episode of Modernising Payments Together, Payments NZ's Steve Wiggins joins David Birch, Victoria Richardson and Chad Haighmark to discuss trust, resilience, governance and system design in the next generation of payments. Listen to the full conversation: https://lnkd.in/eexbcJuu How do you think governance and coordination need to evolve as AI and automation become more embedded in critical systems? #PaymentsNZ #Payments #Trust #Interoperability #Resilience #FuturePayments #PaymentsModernisation

Trust sits at the heart of every payment experience, every system connection, and every shift in expectation. It’s central to the wero (challenge) before us at The Point 2026: how can we align as system to build a payments future for Aotearoa New Zealand that’s trusted, resilient, and ready for what’s next? This is not just about innovation – it’s about how the system aligns to deliver trust, resilience and progress. We’re pleased to welcome two international keynote speakers into essential conversations that will help frame the future of payments in Aotearoa. Sarah Pirie-Nally Payments through a futurist lens Futurist and AI strategist Sarah Pirie-Nally will connect payments signals to deeper shifts, translating them into clear strategic choices for customer impact – and what they mean for how the payments system needs to align and evolve. Bo Harald The art of focusing on everything Digitalisation and innovation leader Bo Harald will explore how progress in payments is happening everywhere at once – and why focus and coordination across the system will matter more than ever. The Point 2026 brings these conversations into the room – with the leaders, decision-makers and innovators shaping what comes next. Through our conference theme of Tātai – Strengthening bonds, we focus on how stronger connections across the system enable trust, resilience and coordinated progress. Aotearoa New Zealand’s payments system is often underestimated. We already have: • high digital adoption • seven-day settlement • industry-led APIs and shared standards That is a strong foundation. But the next phase is not just about building more capability. It is about recognising that trust and identity are becoming core infrastructure – especially as systems begin acting on behalf of users. The opportunity now is to build forward, from what already works, with greater coordination across the ecosystem. We hosted members and payments leaders at our Hub breakfast in Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland with global payments thought leader David Birch. The discussion focused on resilience in a world where regulatory, geopolitical, cyber and AI pressures are increasingly stacking. The message was clear: resilience must be deliberately designed in, alongside modernisation – not added later. Payments NZ Chief Executive Steve Wiggins outlined why this matters for Aotearoa New Zealand, underpinned by shared accountability across the payments ecosystem. Drawing on international examples, David Birch highlighted the importance of multiple payment rails, strong digital identity and offline capability during disruption. Takeaway: resilience is not a feature or a single solution - it’s the outcome of deliberate design, diversity and collective effort. There’s now one week to go until EFTPOS terminals using the PCI 4.x security standard must be replaced – with the sunset date for these devices falling on 30 April 2026. After this date, remaining terminals using the PCI 4.x standard will be non-compliant and subject to disconnection from the EFTPOS network. Keeping Aotearoa New Zealand’s EFTPOS fleet up to date with recent security standards helps to keep the network safe and the risk of card fraud low, protecting businesses and consumers. We acknowledge industry and merchants for their efforts in supporting a smooth transition to more secure devices – with almost all terminals now already upgraded. Any merchants still using older terminals should reach out to their device providers now to ensure they can keep transacting smoothly after next week’s deadline. We’ve wrapped up our API Centre Accreditation and Partnering Project – a 16‑month industry-led collaboration that helped shape how open banking accreditation and partnering could work under the Customer and Product Data Act 2025. Our cross-industry working group, consisting of banks, fintechs and regulatory representatives, delivered practical insights on accreditation, onboarding, risk management, and complex issues like security standards. A few clear themes emerged: 🤝 Early industry input matters 👩💻 Shared approaches to risk and liability reduce friction 🎊 Diverse perspectives strengthen outcomes and delivers more impact While our project is now complete, the insights and resources we’ve collectively developed will continue to support the industry in Aotearoa New Zealand as the regulatory framework takes shape.
