MANILA, Philippines — The state-run weather agency said on Wednesday that most parts of the country could expect less rain within the next 24 hours due to the temporary weakening of the southwest monsoon, locally ‘habagat.’ Habagat is affecting the Ilocos Region, Batanes, and Babuyan Islands, bringing cloudy skies with scattered rain showers and thunderstorms, said weather specialist Chenel Dominguez of the Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa). AT approximately 7:30 a.m. on Monday, June 8, a powerful magnitude 7.8 earthquake struck southern Mindanao just offshore of Sarangani province, causing destruction and panic across a wide area. The most badly affected places were in the vicinity of General Santos City, but quake-related damage was reported as far away as Butuan City and Davao City, with reports of the quake being felt by residents as far from the epicenter as Negros and Leyte.
