One million liters of water beneath the building – for a clear purpose. Below our newly expanded production facility in Melsungen is an ice storage system with a volume equivalent to around 35 tanker trucks. It is used for heating and cooling operations: when water freezes and thaws, thermal energy is stored and released and made usable by heat pumps. Behind this is a clear ambition: new buildings constructed at B. Braun are designed for CO₂‑neutral operation, while modernizations aim to reduce CO₂ emissions by at least 50 percent. The new production facility in Melsungen shows how this ambition is implemented on site. The ice storage is part of an intelligently connected energy system combining photovoltaics, heating and cooling technology, and concrete core activation. This reduces energy losses and enables the targeted use of renewable energy. The expansion in Melsungen is one of many examples of how we are making medical technology more sustainable. Congratulations to the winning teams of the B. Braun Innovation Award 2026 🚀 Our most important internal recognition honors outstanding ideas that create measurable value for patients and customers.
