White-Washed: The “Conservation” of the Physical and Metaphysical States of Ghanaian Slave Castle-Dungeons and Forts

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of those who helped me develop my research top... more I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of those who helped me develop my research topic and those who helped me reach my research goals. First of all, this would not be possible without the help of the School for International Training's staff. Ebo Sam has filled my experience in Ghana with adventure and wonderment through his organization of the various trips and his elusive yet intriguing personality. I would also like to thank Ampah for driving the group around and offering even more illuminating insight into the Ghanaian mind. Finally, I want to thank Dr. Avorgbedor for all of his help with developing my topic from researching the museums within the slave castles and forts to my finished project. Without the staff's assistance, none of this would have been possible. My advisor, Auntie Naana was very helpful making connections with all of the right people. She also offered another perspective into my research that helped broaden my horizons for which I am most grateful for. Collins Bordoh, the chief curator, helped me extensively with my research and offered his views on many things, allowing me to expand my arguments; I thank him as well. To the friends I made in the program, I owe countless hours of feedback and suggestions; not to mention, we had so many good times. I thank my home-stay family for opening up their home and hearts to me. Auntie and Georgina made my stay in Ghana feel like a home away from home and am grateful that I will be forever welcomed in Cape Coast. My thanks also extend to the front porch of their house for giving me a breezy place to exist! Methodology The methodology for this qualitative research is heavily reliant upon personal observation, photographic documentation, secondary source analysis, and interviews. It i was crucial to also develop personal observation through other sources like journals and museum professionals. By visiting and thoroughly investigating Cape Coast Castle, St. George's Castle (referred to as Elmina Castle), Fort Victoria, Fort St. Jago, and the English Fort in Komenda (respectively represented to the left), observations that deal with preservation tactics for the buildings and for memorializing slave castles and forts in Ghana can be addressed. Certainly these case studies are all located in the Central Region, but the differences and variety of preservation at each location allows for all of the castles and forts to be addressed in the following paper. Cape Coast and Elmina Slave Castles are focused on in this paper and are highly invested in when compared to the rest of castles and forts found within Ghana. The forts vary from the once invested Fort St. Jago, the questionably sustained Fort Victoria, and the tragic case of the English Fort in Komenda. Through these five sites, the whole of slave castles and forts in Ghana can be critically critiqued and discussed due to their varied states. In the following paper the castles and forts will be referred to as slave castles and forts, to accurately describe them by simply using their name.

As Robin Kelley argues in a special issue of the Journal of American History that focused on the emergence of the transnational approach, African-American history, as well as Chicano/a studies and Asian-American studies, 'were diasporic from their inception'. They require historians to not only look internally within the United States, but at the larger Black Diasporic community. 1 Du Bois sought to find the source of African-American culture through an investigation of not only American society, but by examining cultural similarities within the Atlantic world.
