How do Nord-Lock washers compare against other bolting solutions from a defense perspective? We put the locking performance of our washers and other products to the test. And not just any test. We set a Junker Vibration Test to match the parameters of the German Industrial Standard DIN 65151, considered the world's most stringent vibration resistance test. What’s more, we used a Junker machine that measures fastener preload directly with a load cell, providing a kN value indicating the amount of preload lost. It’s now officially summer in Sweden – a season and place core to Nord-Lock's origin story. The company that eventually became Nord-Lock was founded in the early 1950s in Stockholm and made oil burners. It was operated by husband-and-wife owners Bengt and Mary Persson, who frequently spent summers in northern Sweden around Mattmar because of Mary’s personal connection to the region, having grown up there. It was during one of the Perssons’ summer visits that Bengt noticed an empty red barn, which he saw as an opportunity to move some of the company's operations to the Mattmar area. Nothing better highlights the full capability of Nord-Lock wedge-locking washers than helping to overcome a major challenge for key machinery operating in extreme conditions. For example, at a large-scale mining operation in the LATAM region (specifically, northern Chile’s Spence mine), the severe vibrations that are part of everyday life had begun to affect an essential piece of ore-processing equipment. The intense shaking was loosening critical bolted joints – greatly affecting operational efficiency and posing a serious risk to worker safety. So, Nord-Lock NL 64 Washers, made of steel for extra durability and corrosion resistance, were swapped in to replace conventional washers. Once tightened, the washers’ wedge-locking design allowed them to maintain the clamp force necessary for securing the bolts from loosening and, as a result, stabilize the machinery.
