The EU Digital Product Passport (DPP) Registry went live on July 20, 2026, but the QR code was never the hard part. The registry is, essentially, a directory. ☑️ What it does: verifies identifiers and controls who can register and read them. ❌ What it doesn't do: hold your traceability data. This means the data must still be built plot by plot, supplier by supplier, and consignment by consignment. Most importantly, it has to hold up under audit. If you're selling agri-commodities into the EU, you're already having to build that #traceability. #EUDR mandates geolocation down to the plot and a Due Diligence Statement per consignment. #PPWR mandates a Declaration of Conformity per packaging unit. ➡️ Every #DPP that touches your products will draw on the same evidence base. The great news is that the work you're doing for EUDR and PPWR isn't a separate compliance cost; instead, it's a headstart on DPP ! What we know: 💡 DPPs aren't mandatory just yet. That step comes a little later when its ESPR delegated act or sector-specific law requires it. Batteries are first in line, with February 2027 as the current kick-off timeline. 💡 The infrastructure is real, and the direction we’re moving is clear: verified, product-level traceability data, captured once and reused across every regulation. 22 days. As of August 12, 2026, packaging placed on the EU market must carry a Declaration of Conformity.    An article by The Carbon Trust lays it out quite clearly. The reality is that the PPWR has a very broad reach: anyone who places packaging, or packaged goods, on the EU market must comply by August 12th. From that point forward, various regulations will be phased in, such as minimization rules, empty-space limits, and bans on single-use items.    The challenge lies in gathering the evidence. "For a hundred years, Africa has sent its cocoa to the world in sacks and received it back in wrappers, paying at both ends of the transaction." - John Owan Enoh, Nigeria's Minister of State for Industry The Abuja Declaration, signed this week by Nigeria, Ghana, Côte d'Ivoire and Cameroon, is the first serious producer-side coordination on the deforestation regulation. The bloc, representing roughly 75% of the world's cocoa, is fighting on two fronts: 1. Ending Africa's role as a raw-bean supplier. 2. Refusing to let EUDR compliance costs land on smallholders who can't absorb them. The truth is every polygon captured, every legality declaration signed, and every mitigation document uploaded has a cost...but we want to avoid having those costs land on the people the regulation was designed to protect. So, what makes the 30 December 2026 deadline survivable for buyers and origin communities alike? It's by treating producing countries as counterparties, not solely evidence sources. The companies ahead of the game are those running traceability as partnerships in origin. The technology matters, but the results come from the field method. The UK has just announced a deforestation ban that brings the world's second major buyer market into close alignment with EUDR. Same commodities, similar reporting requirements, with geolocation on the table.
