I am a Professor of Economics at the University of Pittsburgh, where I also serve as Core Faculty of the Center of Latin American Studies and the Global Studies Program. I received my BA from the Universidad Nacional de Colombia and my PhD from the University of Rochester.
I am an Associate Editor of the Journal of Macroeconomics, and a member of the Advisory Board of the Carnegie-Rochester-NYU Conference, the Human Capital and Economic Opportunity Group, and the Economics Research Network of the Colombia Central Bank.
My research sits at the intersection of macroeconomics, development economics, and demographics. My work in development economics has examined the factors that shape differences in schooling, fertility, and life expectancy across countries, as well as the effects of international trade on inequality and productivity. My research in demographic examines fertility choice, investments in children, intergenerational transfers, social mobility, and the economic value of life. My research has appeared in various academic journals including the Review of Economic Studies, the Journal of Monetary Economics, the International Economic Review, the Economic Journal, and the Review of Economics and Statistics.
