A GIS Model for Site Selection of Industrial Zones in Sri Lanka

Hence, several site selection criteria and appropriate methods for establishing industries have to be concerned by the decision makers and authorities before locating industrial zones in particular regions. Though, at present the enormous data volume and complex criteria regarding this field are available, the suitable site selection process is still problematic. Therefore, this paper assumes that, in some extent, such failures can be overcome by applying Geographic Information System (GIS) and Multi-criteria Decision Making Techniques into the site selection process of industrial zones. In this study, a GIS based model is proposed to screen most suitable locations for establishing Industrial Zones in Kesbewa Divisional Secretariat Division of Colombo District, Sri Lanka. In methodology, ini...

Flooding ranks as the most damaging forms of natural disaster in Sri Lanka. Since the most of the populated urban spaces are being subjected to the flood hazard, urban flood hazard management has come to the fore in the field of disaster management. Many urban areas of the Western Province in Sri Lanka, especially North Colombo Region were severely affected due to the flood hazard in May 2016. Therefore, the main objective of the study is to identify the issues and challenges of urban flood hazard management process and introduce the appropriate framework for enhancing the existing flood hazard roadmap. The methodology of the research focuses to select one Urban Council in the region: Kolonnawa. In the methodology, among the 13 GN divisions in the Kollonnawa Urban Council (KUC), two GN divisions were selected by using judgement sampling method for the convenience of the s...

Nearly threedecades of civil war in the country between the government forces and the LTTE (the Tamil separatists) hadjustified concerted and widespread interventions from both local and international NGOs. The 2004 tsunami, which havocked coastal Sri Lanka, strengthened these justifications and led to a manifold increase in thenumber of NGOs present in the country. This attracted much public and media attention toward NGOactivities in Sri Lanka lead by allegations of abuse of funds, failure to deliver, lack of coordination, etc. Aforemost allegation perhaps is the conversion of Buddhists using unethical methods. Allegations of suchabuses of the Christian faith led to wide spread protests led by the Buddhist monks which created tryingconditions for all humanitarian actors in the country; not just FBOs. The suspicion of Faith Based Organizations (FBO) activities exploded in the final phase of th...

A lot of recent debate on the search for proper indicators for “development? goes beyond limitations of GDP as a sole measure for societal progress. In this context, measuring and understanding of subjective social development has become one of the major challenges in terms of formulating appropriate indices. It is seen that, happiness being promoted as an unconventional indicator of measuring sustainability of both man and environment in the present development discourse through several attempts such as World Happiness Summit, World Happiness Report, Gross National Happiness Index (GNHI) and Better Life Index (BLI) etc. However, those attempts still have failed to explain many of the factors that impact most on people’s material, social and spiritual lives....
