We found common ground in providing platforms for scientists, engineers, and others across fields both to make basic discoveries in nanoscience as well as to leverage the advances of nanoscience and nanotechnology in science, engineering, medicine, business, and other areas. Nanocenter directors from around the world gathered in Beijing earlier this month to discuss challenges and opportunities for nanoscience and nanotechnology. Included in these discussions were (left to right) ACS Nano editors Andre Nel, S.T. He and his group investigate the chemistry and physics of surfaces at the atomic scale using scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy. They have developed new techniques to expand the applicability and chemical specificity of scanning probe microscopies. They also use fluorescence microscopy and multibeam optical tweezers to control the local composition in real and model biological membranes in order to mediate uptake and adhesion.

The ability to control the placement of molecules is essential for the patterning and fabrication... more The ability to control the placement of molecules is essential for the patterning and fabrication of nanoscale electronic devices. We apply selective chemistry and self-assembly in combination with conventional nanolithographic techniques to reach higher resolution, greater precision, and chemical versatility in the nanostructures that we create. We illustrate three successful approaches: (1) phase separation of self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) by terminal and internal functionalization, (2) phase separation of SAMs induced by post-adsorption processing and (3) control of molecular placement by insertion into a self-assembled monolayer. These methods demonstrate the possibilities of patterning films by exploiting the intrinsic properties of the molecules. We then employ these self-assembled monolayers as a means to isolate molecules with electronic function to determine the mechanisms of function, and the relationships between molecular structure, environment, connection, coupling, and function. Using self-assembly techniques in combination with scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) we are able to study candidate molecular switches individually and in small bundles. Alkanethiolate SAMs on gold are used as a host two-dimensional matrix to isolate and to insulate electrically the molecular switches. We then individually address and electronically probe each molecule using STM. The conjugated molecules exhibit reversible conductance switching, manifested as a change in the topographic height in the STM images. The origins of switching and the relevant aspects of the molecular structure and environment required will be discussed.

Supramolecular Assemblies on Surfaces: Nanopatterning, Functionality, and Reactivity

Understanding how molecules interact to form large-scale hierarchical structures on surfaces hold... more Understanding how molecules interact to form large-scale hierarchical structures on surfaces holds promise for building designer nanoscale constructs with defined chemical and physical properties. Here, we describe early advances in this field and highlight upcoming opportunities and challenges. Both direct intermolecular interactions and those that are mediated by coordinated metal centers or substrates are discussed. These interactions can be additive but they can also interfere with each other leading to new assemblies in which electrical potentials vary at distances much larger than those of typical chemical interactions. Earlier spectroscopic and surface measurements have provided partial information on such interfacial effects. In the interim, scanning probe microscopies have assumed defining roles in the field of molecular organization on surfaces delivering deeper understanding of interactions, structures, and local potentials. Self-assembly is a key strategy to form extended structures on surfaces, advancing nanolithography into the chemical dimension and providing simultaneous control at multiple scales. In parallel, the emergence of graphene and the resulting impetus to explore 2D materials have broadened the field, as surface-confined reactions of molecular building blocks provide access to such materials as 2D polymers and graphene nanoribbons. In this Review, we describe recent advances and point out promising directions that will lead to even greater and more robust capabilities to exploit designer surfaces.

Designing, measuring, and controlling molecular- and supramolecular-scale properties for molecular devices

We use molecular design, tailored syntheses, intermolecular interactions, and selective chemistry... more We use molecular design, tailored syntheses, intermolecular interactions, and selective chemistry to direct molecules into desired positions to create nanostructures, to connect functional molecules to the outside world, and to serve as test structures for measurements of single or bundled molecules. Interactions within and between molecules can be designed, directed, measured, understood, and exploited at unprecedented scales. We examine how these interactions influence the chemistry, dynamics, structure, electronic function, and other properties. Such interactions can be used to advantage to form precise molecular assemblies, nanostructures, and patterns, and to control and to stabilize function. These nanostructures can be taken all the way down to atomic-scale precision or can be used at larger scales. We select and tailor molecules to choose the intermolecular interaction strengths and the structures formed within the film. We selectively test hypothesized mechanisms for electronic switching and driven motion by varying molecular design, chemical environment, and measurement conditions to enable or to disable functions and control of these molecules using predictive and testable means. Critical to understanding these variations has been developing the means to make tens to hundreds of thousands of independent single-molecule measurements in order to develop sufficiently significant statistical distributions, comparable to those found in ensembleaveraging measurements, while retaining the heterogeneity of the measurements. We quantitatively compare the conductances of molecule-substrate junctions. We find that the contacts and substrate play critical roles in switching. Switching of rigid, conjugated molecules is due to changes in the molecule-substrate bonds, which involves motion of the molecules and of substrate atoms. We are able to measure the coupling of the electrons of the molecules and substrate by measuring the polarizabilities of the connected functional molecules in high and low conductance states. These polarizabilities are compared to those of other families of molecules and to detailed calculations.

Celebrating Fred Kavli (1927À2013) and the Kavli Prizes in Nanoscience T his month in Oslo, we ce... more Celebrating Fred Kavli (1927À2013) and the Kavli Prizes in Nanoscience T his month in Oslo, we celebrate Fred Kavli and his legacy, including awarding this year's Kavli Prizes. I had the pleasure of knowing him and of having his support, personally and passionately, as well as through the Fred Kavli Chair in NanoSystems Sciences at UCLA that I have held for the last five years. Fred Kavli often said that he supported fundamental science "from the largest to the smallest to the most complex", referring to astrophysics, nanoscience, and neuroscience, respectively. He saw the promise of exploring these fields and the impact this research could have on the world. In addition to awards and chairs, his foundation also supports institutes in these areas around the world, prestigious lectureships, and outreach to explain our work and to garner public support for basic research. We already find heightened awareness of what we do because of these efforts. The BRAIN Initiative in the United States was a result of the efforts organized by the Kavli Foundation, as previously described and laid out in ACS Nano. 1À3 We are sorry to have lost the champion behind all these efforts, Fred Kavli, who passed away last year. This year's prize celebrations in Oslo were the first without him and the difference was palpable. This year's Kavli Prize in Nanoscience was shared by three scientists who advanced our ability to see at the nanoscale. Whereas previous winners built and described zero-, one-, and two-dimensional materials, 5À9 this year's laureates were on the measuring side of nanoscience. Prof. Thomas Ebbesen, of the Institut des Sciences et Ingénierie Supramoléculaires (ISIS) at the University of Strasbourg, showed how surprisingly efficiently light can be transmitted through subwavelength holes. He spent several years after the initial observation to explain the role of surface plasmons in this process. Dr. Stefan Hell of the Max Planck Institute for Biophysical Chemistry at Göttingen proposed and developed super-resolution optical microscopy based on selective stimulated depletion of chromophores. Sir John Pendry of Imperial College London showed the effects of and motivated work to create metamaterials with negative indices of refraction. All three are frequent ACS Nano authors. During their award addresses, this year's nanoscience laureates, as well as those in astrophysics and neuroscience, emphasized the importance of persistence in bringing their science to fruition over years and even decades. Look for a more detailed description of the extraordinary work of the nanoscience laureates and its impact in an upcoming issue. This month in Oslo, we celebrate Fred Kavli and his legacy, including the Kavli Prizes. Fred Kavli (1927À2013) was a champion of nanoscience and other basic research.

Self-Assembly of Cage Molecules: Structure, Design, and Function at the Nanoscale

We use self- and directed assembly to control the placement of single molecules at the nanoscale ... more We use self- and directed assembly to control the placement of single molecules at the nanoscale to create the intricate morphologies required for materials and device applications. Self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) occur when molecules spontaneously form an organized, chemically bound single layer on a substrate. As the monolayer forms a two-dimensional molecular sheet, defects are included in the structures, and are later used to our advantage. We are currently working with carboranethiol molecules, which are cage molecules. Cage molecules are molecular building blocks that have rigid three-dimensional structures. Carboranethiols, which have interacting dipole moments, form few defects and add a level of tunability to self-assembled monolayers. We have used two methods in this research, scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and contact angle measurements.
