Cette étude analyse le dilemme de la fidélité dans la traduction de Ruwan Bagaja (1934) d'Abubaka... more Cette étude analyse le dilemme de la fidélité dans la traduction de Ruwan Bagaja (1934) d'Abubakar Imam, de l'hausa vers le français. L'objectif principal est de déterminer comment une traduction littéraire peut concilier la fidélité à l'intention de l'auteur, les attentes du lecteur francophone et les normes linguistiques de la langue d'arrivée. La problématique réside dans le fait que les spécificités culturelles, stylistiques et religieuses de la littérature hausa se prêtent difficilement à un transfert direct en français, ce qui oblige le traducteur à opérer des arbitrages. La méthodologie adoptée repose sur une analyse comparative qualitative d'extraits choisis issus de la traduction française réalisée dans le cadre de sa dissertation de master à Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto (2024). L'étude s'appuie sur les cadres théoriques d'Amparo Hurtado Albir et de Fortunato Israel, et se structure autour de trois axes : la fidélité au contenu et au style de l'auteur, la fidélité au lecteur francophone et la fidélité à la langue d'arrivée. Les résultats montrent que la fidélité en traduction ne constitue pas un principe absolu, mais un équilibre stratégique où le traducteur agit comme médiateur culturel entre deux univers linguistiques et culturels.

The Hausa term for proverb is Karin Magana and they are one of the oldest and most important types of myth, which form part and parcel of the Hausa culture. The influence of those proverbs in the socio-cultural psyche of the Hausa is second only to religious injunctions. In Hausa society, proverbs express morals and ethics of the people. Hausa proverbs maintain conformity to cultural values and accepted pattern of behaviors. Proverbs are employed in different kinds of situations in Hausa society to control numerous activities without the use of force or harsh language. There are many proverbs that relate to situation of courage, despair, hope and others. They are also used to caution, advise, educate and control. This work viewed some of these Hausa proverbs from sociolinguistic standpoint. Thus, this shows the extreme diversity in Hausa proverbs.

This paper examines the ambivalent feminism of Aminata Sow Fall as depicted in her novel The Begg... more This paper examines the ambivalent feminism of Aminata Sow Fall as depicted in her novel The Beggars' Strike. Using a qualitative approach, the analysis explores the various manifestations of feminism through the female characters. The study identifies different feminist currents represented in the work, such as Christian feminism, Islamic feminism, and African feminism, and how the author reconciles feminism with African traditions. The findings reveal that Sow Fall's feminism is a moderate feminism that integrates social issues and does not adhere to the Western definition of feminism. The author presents female characters that embody both moderate and radical forms of feminism. Characters like Lolli and Salla Niang represent a more moderate feminism that operates within the framework of African traditions and values, while Sine and Raabi exemplify a more radical feminism that challenges patriarchal structures and embraces Western-inspired notions of gender equality. The paper contributes to the understanding of the complexity of feminist movements in the African context. It also highlights how Sow Fall navigates the tensions between feminism and African cultural identity, offering a nuanced portrayal of the diverse ways in which African women engage with and redefine feminism. The study underscores the importance of considering the intersections of gender, culture, and tradition in the analysis of feminist discourses in African literature.

This article examines the translation strategies used in the French version of Ruwan Bagaja, a la... more This article examines the translation strategies used in the French version of Ruwan Bagaja, a landmark work of Hausa literature written by Alhaji Abubakar Imam. Drawing on translation theories by Vinay and Darbelnet, Nida, Baker, and Munday, the study highlights borrowing, calque, literal translation, adaptation, transposition, modulation, and equivalence techniques. The analysis reveals a careful balance between fidelity to the source text and readability for French-speaking audiences. This approach emphasizes the role of translation as a tool for intercultural mediation in postcolonial contexts. The article concludes by underlining the need for further research on translating African literatures to enhance their global recognition and dissemination. Résumé Cet article explore les stratégies de traduction mobilisées dans la version française de Ruwan Bagaja, oeuvre emblématique de la littérature hausa écrite par Alhaji Abubakar Imam. En s'appuyant sur les théories traductologiques de Vinay et Darbelnet, Nida, Baker et Munday, l'étude met en lumière les procédés tels que l'emprunt, le calque, la traduction littérale, l'adaptation, la transposition, la modulation et l'équivalence. L'analyse révèle un équilibre entre fidélité au texte source et lisibilité pour le lectorat francophone. Cette démarche souligne le rôle de la traduction comme médiation interculturelle dans les contextes postcoloniaux. L'article conclut sur la nécessité de poursuivre les recherches sur la traduction des littératures africaines pour favoriser leur diffusion et reconnaissance à l'échelle mondiale.

La traduction du hausa vers le français pose des défis linguistiques et culturels majeurs en rais... more La traduction du hausa vers le français pose des défis linguistiques et culturels majeurs en raison des différences structurelles, grammaticales et sociolinguistiques entre ces deux langues. Le hausa, langue tonale à forte charge contextuelle, présente une complexité au niveau de l'aspect verbal, de la modalité et de la détermination. Cet article examine les formes verbales hausa, leur fonctionnement et les interprétations qu'elles peuvent susciter en français. À travers une analyse contrastive, il propose une approche critique pour éviter les pièges de la transposition littérale. Une traduction dynamique, ancrée dans le contexte et respectueuse des usages culturels, est essentielle. Une meilleure compréhension des catégories verbales et de leur usage pragmatique est cruciale pour produire des traductions fidèles et culturellement pertinentes.

This study investigates the representations of marriage in Kannywood films and their impact on au... more This study investigates the representations of marriage in Kannywood films and their impact on audience perceptions in Sokoto, Nigeria. The central problem of this study is the tension between traditional values and modern relationship dynamics as depicted in these films. The objectives are to analyze Kannywood's influence on marital perceptions and explore its implications. Grounded in socialization and communication theories, this research explores how media shape cultural norms. Employing a qualitative methodological approach, data were collected through surveys and focus group discussions with diverse participants from different age groups and backgrounds. The findings reveal a dual representation of marriage in Kannywood films, oscillating between traditional norms and modern ideals. While younger audiences express a preference for romantic and egalitarian relationships, older generations often perceive these portrayals as a threat to cultural values. This study highlights the role of Kannywood as a significant cultural influence, urging further exploration of its impact on societal norms regarding marriage.
This study presents the sociolinguistic and performative dimensions of two viral Hausa expression... more This study presents the sociolinguistic and performative dimensions of two viral Hausa expressions: baza capacity (to show off one's means) and kare mutunci (to protect one's honor), popularized by micro-influencer Abdul Turaki in the urban context of Kano, Nigeria. Using a qualitative discourse analysis of digital content (videos, comments and posts), this paper demonstrates how these expressions function as linguistic acts with normative power. They not only reflect youth aspirations and frustrations in precarious social conditions but also reshape ethical standards and social recognition mechanisms. By drawing on critical sociolinguistics, pragmatics and African youth language studies, this article reveals how digital discourse can legitimize transgressive behaviour and redefine urban masculinity. The paper calls for educational strategies to re-anchor speech within ethical and community-based frameworks.

En examinant des oeuvres majeures telles que People of the City et Jagua Nana, l'analyse met en lumière la manière dont les récits d'Ekwensi saisissent les complexités de l'identité nigériane et de la vie urbaine, tout en résonnant avec des expériences africaines plus larges. L'exploration s'enrichit de perspectives issues des études urbaines et de la théorie postcoloniale, offrant une compréhension nuancée de l'impact d'Ekwensi dans le paysage littéraire. Au coeur de cette discussion se trouve la manière dont Ekwensi navigue entre les défis urbains et l'identité nationale, enrichissant ainsi le discours plus large sur la littérature africaine. Cet article souligne le rôle d'Ekwensi en tant que figure clé de la littérature nigériane et met en avant la pertinence durable de ses thèmes dans l'écriture africaine contemporaine.
