  • Carbon Quick Win - Your boxes are shipping air, and you're paying for it twice. Oversized boxes don't just look wasteful. They cost you in materials, courier emissions, and shipping fees. Quick Review → Boxes 2-3x bigger than the product inside → Excess filler (bubble wrap, air pillows, paper) → Double packaging that adds zero value The fix is simple: right-size your parcels. ✅ Less material waste ✅ Lower courier emissions (smaller parcels = more per delivery run) ✅ Reduced shipping costs ✅ Smaller carbon footprint, no extra spend required This is the kind of quick win we help businesses find, the changes that cut emissions and costs, without a full sustainability overhaul. Follow Attain Zero for more practical carbon wins. 👇See company comments for link and info #CarbonReductionPlan #CarbonConsultant #AttainZero

  • Carbon Quick Wins: Buy Local Where Possible One simple change is to source goods and services locally where it makes sense. Shorter transport distances can help reduce your Scope 3 emissions, while often bringing additional benefits such as shorter lead times, stronger supplier relationships and supporting local businesses. Areas where buying locally can make a real difference include: ✅ Printing ✅ Packaging ✅ Office consumables ✅ Catering ✅ Promotional merchandise It's worth remembering that transport is only one part of a product's carbon footprint, so local isn't automatically the lowest-carbon option. However, when products are otherwise similar, choosing a nearby supplier can be a straightforward way to reduce emissions. Small procurement decisions, made consistently across a business, can add up to meaningful carbon savings over time. What's one local supplier your business has switched to recently?

  • Is Carbon Reporting the new GDPR! We remember when GDPR seemed to be everywhere. Every conference, newsletter, and conversation. Businesses were scrambling to understand what it meant and whether it applied to them. Fast forward a few years, and it's just part of normal business life. You still have to deal with it, you just don't talk about it much anymore. We are wondering whether carbon reporting is following a similar path. Not because every business suddenly wants to measure emissions, but because customers are asking more questions, and what feels optional today often becomes expected tomorrow. Does it feel like sustainability is becoming part of business as usual in your sector? 👇See company comments for link and info #CarbonReductionPlan #CarbonConsultant #AttainZero

  • Scope 3: From Compliance Headache to Competitive Edge. This is something we see with our clients: Two suppliers, similar price, similar quality. What breaks the tie? Increasingly, it's carbon data. That's the moment Scope 3 stops being a burden and starts being a genuine advantage. Companies that actually understand their value chain emissions are: Winning tenders they'd otherwise lose on a coin flip Building stronger, stickier supplier relationships Getting ahead of regulation instead of scrambling to catch up You don't need perfect, complete data to see the benefit. What you actually need is simpler than that; ✔ Sensible boundaries around what you're measuring ✔ Assumptions you can defend and explain ✔ A clear line back to what the business actually cares about Is carbon data already shaping buying decisions in your industry, or is it still on the horizon?

  • Thinking about starting your Carbon footprint journey? Here's the honest bit nobody tells you. If you asked five different people how to measure your carbon footprint, you'd probably get five different answers. Spend-based vs activity-based data, which conversion factors to use, and whether Scope 3 is even worth bothering with yet! We hear this a lot at Attain Zero. So, here's what we would actually tell a friend starting out: Don't chase a perfect number. A rough, honest baseline you can explain beats a polished number you can't defend. Nobody expects you to have this nailed on day one, they expect you to be able to show your workings. Scope 1 and 2 are the easy part. That's your own operations and energy use, fairly straightforward to measure. Scope 3 (your supply chain) is where it gets messy, and where most of the actual emissions usually sit. Don't let that put you off starting with 1 and 2 first. Spend data is a starting point, not an answer. "We spent £X on diesel, so emissions are probably Y" is fine as a first pass. But real usage data, matched against the UK Government's conversion factors, tells a much truer story, and it's the version that holds up if someone actually asks you about it. Get the baseline before you get the headline. It's tempting to announce a big net-zero date early. But a target without a proper baseline underneath it is just a hope, not a plan. None of this is complicated once someone's walked you through it once. It's just that most people are being asked to do it for the first time, with conflicting advice and no real map. That's the bit we spend most of our time on at Attain Zero, not persuading anyone that carbon reporting matters, but helping them actually get started without the overwhelm. If you're stuck at the "where do I even begin" stage, we are genuinely happy to chat it through. No pitch, just a second pair of eyes. What's tripped you up most so far, the data, the jargon, or just knowing where to start?

  • "I don't see these questionnaires going away any time soon." That's the view of our Director after more than 10 years working in manufacturing and Carbon Consultancy. "I've seen these questionnaires from a wide range of customers throughout my career. I've also been on the other side, sending them out to suppliers to meet ESG targets". I don't see them disappearing any time soon, especially with the recent changes to ISO 9001, which now require businesses to consider their climate impact." Many businesses still hope that sustainability questionnaires are just another passing compliance exercise. The reality is they're becoming part of doing business. Whether they're coming from customers, tender requirements or quality management systems, organisations are increasingly being asked to demonstrate that they understand their carbon footprint and have a plan to reduce it. The businesses that prepare now will spend less time scrambling to answer questionnaires later. Have you noticed an increase in customer sustainability or carbon-related questionnaires over the past couple of years?

  • A lot of SMEs that we talk to think their biggest challenge is reducing emissions. Usually, it isn’t. It’s figuring out where to start without getting buried in jargon, spreadsheets, or conflicting advice. We hear the same questions all the time: “What actually counts?” “Do we need Scope 3 yet?” “What are tenders expecting now?” “Are we already behind everyone else?” And that tends to create two types of extremes. Some businesses avoid it completely because it feels too overwhelming. Others jump straight into complicated reporting processes they don’t really need yet. In reality, most companies are better off starting much simpler than they think. 🔹Get a baseline in place. 🔹Make sure Scope 1 & 2 data is reliable. 🔹Create a reporting process people can actually follow. That alone puts most businesses in a far stronger position than they realise. You just need clarity good enough to take the next step. If you need help or advice to take the next step, or clarity on your current numbers, we make the process simple and manageable. We work out what needs to be included. Gather information from energy bills, fuel usage, waste and travel records. Then we use our specifically developed carbon calculator to provide us with accurate results, based on UK Government conversion factors. Then we start to build your carbon reduction plan. 👇See Company Comments for link and information

  • When accounting for Scope 3, end of life treatment is accounted for in your product life cycle analysis or companies emissions, if relevant. To determine the impact, the following questions are asked: - Can it be fixed? - Can it be upgraded without replacing the original system? - Can it be given a new life? - Can it be recycled? - Will this full product need to be scraped? Our Sister company, RSP Ltd, have developed a replacement product for a Flashing Aspect Control Unit, which can be retrofitted directly into the existing railway equipment, meaning the original signalling equipment can be kept, instead of scrapping the full unit, resulting in installers: ✅ Saving resources ✅ Saving Money ✅Saving time ✅ Delivering a project with an overall lower carbon footprint. Great work, Team RSP! #ReduceEmissions #ReuseEquipment #SustainableInstallations #NetworkRail #Innovation

Not every signalling upgrade needs to become a major signalling project. When an ageing Flashing Aspect Control Unit (FACU) reaches the end of its life, the assumption is often that a larger signalling upgrade is the only option. In many cases, it doesn't have to be. RSP's Signal Aspect Flashing Relay (SAFR) is the only Network Rail accepted product designed to replace the old FACU, and for even more convenience, it can be combined with RSP’s fantastic SAFR adaptor plate. With the SAFR adaptor plate, no wiring alterations are needed. Just disconnect the old FACU, connect the existing wires to the new adaptor plate and plug in the new SAFR. Quick, easy and effective. Allowing you to modernise a critical component without the cost, disruption and timescales associated with upgrading an entire signalling system. ✔ Lower project costs ✔ Faster installation ✔ Minimal disruption to existing infrastructure ✔ Compatible with both incandescent and LED signals ✔ Designed to fit standard BR930 relay slots using an adaptor where required Sometimes the smartest investment isn't replacing everything. It's replacing the component that needs it. If you're planning renewals or looking for a more cost-effective solution for ageing FACUs, our experienced team is happy to discuss your options. 👇See company comment for more info #RailIndustry #RailSignalling #RailInfrastructure #RailEngineering #RailPower
